Derby ain't just pool, there's cues there.......nice ones

Did you get the Gus from a booth or individual?

I don't know much about them Gus cues...

Ken

Booth.

I'm quite sure you've hit with at least one before...lol

I played with a Bushka one time in New York(1989). It stood out with the way it played. I had never hit a ball with a Gus before until an hour or so after I bought this one. It chirps or sings to you when you strike the cue ball, perfect hit, balance, etc. Love at 1st hit you might say.

I can't even begin to imagine the fun, excitement and satisfaction one must derive from just having a shopping spree for pool cues.
And we aren't just talking run of the mill cues either...........I mean these are some monster cue-makers you just acquired.

My orientation to cue buying has always been singular and sequential, i.e., one at a time. It's obvious you are playing in the MLB when it comes
to cues while I simply barn-storm around in High A League baseball. It must be incredibly satisfying to return home with an armful of pool cues.

Matt B.

Wish I could say it was straight cash deals. In short it was trade cash deals. It hurt to give up a couple that I had, but I'd been ready for a Gus and there it was. The only way that cue wasn't going to be mine was if someone bought it before I could. I had no plans on the other 3 that I acquired. I got the cue bug while I was there, spent all my cash except for enough money to buy gas on the way home.

Nice cues and nice to meet you Jerry

Nice to meet you too Greg. It's funny that I'd ask people if they were on AZB, just to put a face with a user ID. Some people looked at me funny, but most would say they were and tell me their user name and then I'd usually know who they were.

Look forward to seeing you next year, Jerry

That is a highly successful (& expensive) trip!! All tremendous cues.

Congrats & thanks for sharing!

Was nice to meet you. You had some serious wood in that case. I made a remark to Roy on the way home that a lot of folks were walking around with some high end hardware. Seems like a lot of people really enjoy the culture of cues. I met many cue makers and cue traders and collectors and was really impressed by the level of passion displayed.

Thanks dannylee, CMD, John Barton, and Metallicane for all of the compliments and kind words.

John, that's the 1st time I've ever went to a tournament and end up focused on cues. I always go to tourneys to play in them. We had 5 inches of snow Tuesday night and I couldn't make the 9 ball part of the DCC, so I went on Thursday instead. Had plans to gamble and watch matches, but ended up looking for cues.

Metallicane, that Mottey is out of this world,19.1 oz. of perfect balance and hit.

Thank you gentlemen, Jerry

Cues

The Mottey cue is the best of the bunch for play and value. He made the best ivory piloted joint .Sell the Gus and that ugly southwest, and the mottey and get rid of that broom stick hitting sugartree. There's a southwest for sale right now on az with ebony on ebony points and a solid birdseye maple handle that gives all those cues the 7 ball. Just my opinion.Rich aka the skunk.

Hey, not fair, I thought we were getting Gus cues together, I guess you will have to get another one in a year or two. Great cues, congratzzzzzzzzzzzz.

DCC, cues

Jerry, it was my pleasure doing business w/ you. Rich the skunk [know it all] don't you mislead Jerry. Rich, knew Gus cues he sold 20 yrs prior, better than the owner did, or probably better than Gus did. Jerry, you got some fine cues, all them. beats gambling & going home w/ nothing. to Rich, you did know it all, but like me, forgot most of it. you probably shoot now w/ a 5 pc Meucci taped up so it don't fall apart. regards to all. don "the SUREMANATER"..... sureman183 ...... Jerry send me a email w/ phone no

Thanks Brice, Rich(I think...lol), Rod, and Don(For the Gus and Mottey) for all the nice comments. All of these cues play fantastic and the weights are near perfect. I wish the shafts were a little bit fatter on a couple of them, but that didn't even come close to being a deal breaker for me. The Gus weighs 19.4 and the Mottey, SW, and Sugar all weigh 19.1. I didn't know what any of them weighed when I bought them. I got back home Sunday morning and immediately did the specs and was even more pleased.

Thanks again, Jerry

Derby Haul

Jerry, great batch of cues. Really love the Szamboti, Gus was a Master!
Glad you had a good time.

Thanks Greg, I'm loving that Gus. I went there to play/watch pool, but all I did was buy, sell, and trade cues. I did manage to play 6 or 8 hours of 9 ball while I was there. I did have a great time though.

Thanks buddy, Jerry

Jerry...you are a man of....of ...I don't know what to write....impulse? Self-indulgence? Extravagance?
I am ....dumfounded.....can't even imagine buying a cue...any cue...without knowing what it weighed?

I mean if the cue was a stupid dumb , too good to pass up price....well, sure. But that doesn't happen.
There's been cues I'd love to have and passed them up because the weight was 1/2 ounce too heavy.
The RB Alamo cue on Cornerstone Cues is the cue I lust for but it's too heavy and so I won't buy it.

Anyway, I'm just a tight-ass when it comes to pool cues......the cue has to be "perfectly straight" and all
the other specs have got to be really close to what I want in my playing cue. That's why I ordered a
custom and so to read that you didn't confirm the cue weights until you got home, well,.....Jeez, you have
a pair of brass ones........I can't ever see myself doing that buying a pool cue.

Cues

Jerry knows he got some nice cues like the gus, which are hard to find in that shape.I already told him. And Don we all get old ,but I still remember all gus's cues real good,The ones i got and sold and to who, and the cues I still have in the boxes they come in are in mint perfect and 100 percent.I'am very sick now and will be making a decision on what I am going to do with them. Take care of yourself Don,your the last of a dying breed that took that step back in time to be with the great cue makers. It still brings tears to my eyes to remember the day gus died,Sept 4 1988,he was a dear dear friend. Good night everyone. Rich know it all.

I thought the Gus was 20oz. give or take a little, but I believe most of Gus' cues weighed like that. The Mottey was part of the package and I had to have a Mottey ivory joint cue to take out of the house and I figured it would be 19-19.5oz. Got really lucky on the SW, I was in the right place at the right time when it was offered. I figured it would be 20oz. give or take. The Sugartree, I just wanted it and the price was nearly 1/2 of what I've seen on here so I thought it was pretty fair for a must have cue.

I can play with an 18 to 21oz. cue, so the weights weren't going to be deal breakers. Balance is the key and these 4 makers know what they're doing and each of these cues are perfectly balanced. They all really play strong and I'm happy with all of them. Can't for now rate one of thems play over the other, but that South West is the best SW player that I've ever hit balls with. The lightest SW that I had was 19.7oz., this one being 19.1oz. gives that cue the 7 and the breaks.

I'd say that I just got lucky on the cue weights. I wish I did have brass balls, but the truth is I'm pretty easy going and not too hard to please.

Thanks again Matt, Jerry
