Anyone see this drive on Ebay?

Tom,
I sent him the following message:

I'm still unsure as to what is included. What about the carriage and cross-slide? Does this unit replace them or is the Delrin nut somehow attached to the existing carriage?
Thanks very much,

and the reply I got was:

OK, Gary.Thanks
If you have a taig lathe, this replaces the entire X-Axis system. Bolts on. Easy.
Cheers, Thanks for your Question.
Phil.

So, since I didn't get a very specific answer, I passed.
He has what appears to be the identical setup on another auction for $98.

Gary,
I pretty much understand what he is offering but it would be a lot better if he used a Video and YouTube to Demo. My old Cue Making partner has my Hightower in Fort Lauderdale and is getting Married Saturday. I was thinking it would be the perfect Wedding Gift (if I didn't want his bride to ever talk to me again)

power feed

I have been talking to him also and the auction for the $98 fits the 2 foot bed so I ask him about building one to fit the 4 ft beds the difference being a 39" ball-screw with a 12" solid shaft and flex couplers when I get mine I will definitely put up some feedback on here. The set up looks fantastic and can even be mounted on the back of the lathe so you can still use the the rack and pinion if needed

Glad you had better communication than I did. Were you able to find out if it includes a new carriage and cross-slide?

Thanks

Gary

Guys, I see a few issues with this setup.

1. I don't see any bearings to control end play on the screw. Backlash on the long screw isn't that important, but if you put the load on the stepper bearings, you're going to have problems. The steppers are not supposed to lake a linear load.

2. I'm still not sure if it's just a stepper motor, or an integrated stepper motor with some kind of driver. Will it move as it sits when you buy it, or do you have to also supply a CNC driver. If you have to supply the driver, then I'd go a completely different route anyway.

3. I don't see much use in CNC for just one axis. You could easily mount a long screw and a nut and turn it with a small gear reduced motor. I remember seeing someone using either power window motors or windshield wiper motors. I thought it was a pretty smart idea. They have lots of power, are cheap and easy to get.

Obviously, it would not be something I would be interested in, but the things that I mentioned above should be addressed if you're thinking about buying one.

I've also seen it. Inquired several months ago when he first started offering them for the small 2' lathes. At that time he told me he had no intention of offering one for a cue lathe. Guess he had enough people inquire about them that he decided to offer it. Like Gary, I didn't get much info from the guy. Getting simple answers was like pulling teeth so I gave up. If anybody gets one I would LOVE some feedback on it.

Nineballer...... have you already ordered one ?? If I could still use my regular handwheel with my rack & pinion to do tips, ferrule, and regular work then I would be all in for one.

He told me that it would take a week to build the longer ball screw due to him being backed up machining other items then he is gonna let me know when it is done and I will order it. Does anyone else have a better set-up that I could buy cheaper and works better ? I'm definitely in the market. being able to disengage the feed would not be to big of a deal for me because I have 2 lathes and this on will be set up for tapering only

i've heard a couple of people say ballscrew now in this thread and that aint no ballscrew. The listing said it doesnt come with a drive? How many people are going to be shocked that they have to buy and rig some type of pulse generator for that stepper after it shows up with a motor and loose wires?

According to his auction, you'll need this item number http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sherline-or...420?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item233656dbec

AND a 12V power supply to add to it.
