This was kind of like the "barn find" dilemma you see on Velocity TV. Do you restore the car, or leave it as is...
So since then, the decision was made, and she was shipped off about 3+ years ago. I got some great advice from fellow AZ'ers on which direction to go. There were the purists, (myself included), who thought to just clean her up, replace what is needed, and end it there. But knowing that I will never
sell it, and wanting to be able to play with it comfortably without feeling like I was holding the end of a Louiseville Slugger, I decided I wanted to make it a player, to modern standards. There was one ivory dot missing from one of the points, the wrap was a bit too distressed to save, the joint collar was loose....
The signature (initials) on the forearm were saved, two new shafts made, and the butt narrowed to modern playing dimensions. I still have the four original shafts.
It arrived a short time ago, and I couldn't be happier. Brought it to league night just to look at it under the lights and hit a few shots. It feels great, and I'm a bit leary to bring it out again fearing the ivory butt getting damaged. Found myself always resting it on top of my shoe.
New very dark brown leather wrap matches the brazilian rosewood nicely.
Here's some bad pics of the "new" Rambow:
