is this a challenge for a cue maker??

I have a customized adam ah-12, its currently on sale on ebay, (if it doesnt sell) I love this

cue, its my favorite design on a cue, 4 points up, 4 down, I had proficient billiards refinish

it to make look like a fancy sneaky, the guy did beautiful work, it came out perfect to what

I wanted. Why am I selling it, easy, the work added about an ounce and half to the weight

and since I started using joints made of phenolic and other materials I prefer it over a steel

joint, probably all in my head, but so is pool, so now i cant play with it.

wanted to add an ebony handle all the way down with maybe a hoppe style cap, and

also replace the joint with phenolic and a 3/8X10 pin, or radial. what would something

like this cost me? I want the weight to be under 19oz.

my title may be misread, I'm simply asking what my options are, or if its even worth it.

If you don't like the fact it got some weight added to it. I think you will get even more weight if you add an ebony handle. Why not just have someone remove a little weight out of it?

I asked, I was told it would compromise the cues construction too much, by a couple of respected cue makers on this site, and it would also have an uneven balance point. I was also told that a custom cue maker can build to a specific weight regardless of the wood, thats why they make better cues than factories, they understand wood better. It wouldn't even need to be ebony, if they could stain a wood to be near black would be fine also, I don't know whats possible, so I asked the cue maker on the ask the cuemaker forum:wink:

The work required to replace the handle with something else to achieve your goal would cost to much in the end. Better off ordering a custom at that point.

To replace the joint collar and pin with something else is very doable, but be noted that in in doing so you'll need to acquire a new shaft along with it. Doesn't make much sense to modify a shaft in which you noted it has a wobble. As for changing out the weight bolt, have you tried to remove it yet? It could be epoxied in, so don't try to hard to remove it. Is it steel, aluminium? Does a magnet want to stick to it, that'll tell ya. There are varying options depending upon what bolt it is. The key is that the weight bolt itself is probably holding the butt cap on, so length is more important than material.

As long as you're comfortable with purchasing a new shaft, the second choice of options will be cheaper than having the handle replaced. As far as the cost of work goes, it all depends upon who does it, and whether or not you have to ship it out too. Can either get a fancy LD shaft, and have it matched up with the ring work on the butt or get that makers standard shaft. I'd say anything over $300 for a new shaft+joint collar and pin replacement plus shipping would be too much to spend. But that's also if you're buying like an OB/Tiger/Predator shaft. Price would be mostly dependent upon choice of shaft.

FYI the cue is just a 4 pointer with the veneers meeting up.

It does not makes sense to do what your thinking about.

It is a high price to do it.

Better off buying a new cue made to your specs.

Mondern cues made by a good cue maker today are better than old cues even by some of the so called dead masters because of modern materials, glues and specific cue equipment for different jobs and proliferation and information sharing of different building methods.

My first cue was an Adams cue I bought in 1975 and it warped in no time. I have seen many Adams cues in my day and they were never more that average production models that could not hang with Viking or Mcderrmot concerning quality. IMO.

thank you all, for your responses, they were all basically the same, DON'T DO IT, LOL.
I guess I'll sell this as is and when I do I'll invest in a custom. If you all know anyone willing to buy this one that money will immediately be reinvested in a cuemaker.

I bought an OB classic, cue plays fine, but I weight it and its almost 21oz. no weight bolt, and the weight bolt you saw in pic didnt make a difference when taken out. I like em 18oz or so. thanks for your reply, I decided it against it and im gonna try to sell it and invest in a custom
