how are ya'll doing in league ?

I agree. BnR's in 8-ball are not as common as BnR's in 9/10-ball. In APA 8-ball I don't have a single break and run. I have multiple in APA 9-ball.
With the two sets I played Tuesday, I broke 10 times and only 2 were BnR's.

Setting a handicap or judging a handicap by BnR's in 8-ball isn't accurate.

Yep...I as well do not have a high break and run % as well and for the most part do not really go for it unless I know for sure I can run out (at least in my mind). I probably have one of the lowest break and run %s for 7s in 8 ball, but on the flip side I would be willing to bet I have one of the highest win%s with a minimum of 200 matches of 8 ball for all the 7s out there in Des Moines. Yes it's APA so not really a brag lol.

We are playing in an irish pub tonight for double jeopardy...must resist the urge to let my very small irish side come out and keep it tame while trying to get a 6 point break in 9 ball.

I agree.

Is there a better (or any) way to really compare two people without just having them play each other?

Have them play 8-ball, give them BIH after the break, count how many innings it takes for them to run their group of balls. Average their innings after 10 games.

0-2: SL7
2-3: SL6
3-4: SL5
4-5: SL4
5 +: SL3

It's not super accurate, but it will ballpark their speed.

or the country for that matter

Well not's get too silly :embarrassed2:

81% rounded is solid, but I doubt it is in that category...I have 198 matches under my belt so I am 2 matches until the lovely 200 mark. I sort of wish I didn't sandbag in 8 ball my first full year back from college...that # could be closer to 83-84% (dumped about 6-7 matches). I am overrated a bit in my opinion though, but it's all good...occasionally it motivates me to try harder!

You are close but a bit off, especially giving BIH after the break. 7s will be 1.5 or less with BIH after the break easily in my opinion with this scenario unless their are multiple clusters out there.

True. I'm also thinking of barbox play. Not all of us are on barboxes.

Oh trust me, I hate the big table....I'm all of 5'6.579857" so I prefer the barbox :grin-square:

Yeah, if you throw in big tables that may be closer to correct. Sht I may move down to a 6 in 8 ball on the big table if not a 5 lol.

The way the APA handicap system is, I'd be very surprised if after 200 matches that an 81% isn't in the top 2% of members. Its one thing to be at 81% after 30-40 matches.

How many matches do you figure you played as a 7?

When I came back from college and started playing adult APA (used to play some in junior APA for under 21), I want to say for that first year I was a 6 before I decided to quit stalling and enter destroy mode :)....If I had to guess (this is just a guess keep in mind), 170-180 of my matches are as a 7...it could be higher, or lower...just a guess since I don't have a way looking it up.

I just joined APA for the beginning of last year's summer session. I have a 74% win percentage after 42 matches. I started as the usual SL4 but have since been moved to a 6. I have only played 9-10 matches as a 6 and feel its only a matter of time before becoming a 7 to stay. Our team's captain and co-captain who both have well over 300 lifetime matches agree. I have never sandbagged. Have played every match to win. I guess it would depend on what speed a SL7 truly plays at. I'm guessing they can be anywhere from a C+ to an A in reality. I consider myself a C/C+ speed player as I really don't play much except for league night. I have a 8' table in my basement but only hit balls around maybe once every couple weeks if that. If a true A speed player played in my division as a SL7, he'd likely be hard-pressed to lose a match. Of the ten teams, there are no SL7s this session. What do you consider your speed to be?

There is one SL7 in our division, that I know of. I played on his team last session. The session before that, he was MVP. However, the session that I played (last session, my first), he was somewhere around 50%. He didn't impress me much. I've played him sets of 8-ball and 9-ball and we play even. I'm assuming they have him locked in as a 7.

Yeah I'm guessing that once you're a 7, you'll always be a 7. Would be nice if you could see stats of other team's players too. I swear there's more to the handicap system than simple mathematical calculations. I know the LO can change it as they want but it just seems like a lot of arbitrary stuff happens. We have a guy on our team who was recently changed back to a SL6 after being a 5 for months. This was 3-4 weeks ago. He has one win in seven matches so far this session and since joining our team midway through last summer session(which he started as a 6 and dropped to a 5) his win % is 39%. How does that merit being a 6??!! His lifetime win % is 50. Some strange stuff indeed.

In my prime on the barbox I would say a B...now...probably a C. I would be a 6 in APA in some states I would image. I have such a high win % because I play very smart (imo)...don't try to run out of the break unless I assess the table and feel it is runnable, play good safes, and when it comes time to get out I have good success doing so. Also in Iowa (Des Moines specifically), APA pool is weak compared to other states in terms of the quality of play

Good deal. Well, that win % is impressive to me. I just calculated that I would need to win my next 12 straight matches to get to 80%. I think I recall my best run was 7 straight and that was as a SL5 so I don't see it happening. Although I am on 6 straight right now and all as a SL6. I was hoping to reach 80% until i had a bad stretch back in dec/jan where I lost 4 of 5 matches. That set me back quite a bit.

Thanks...to my credit I always (try) to play the highest handicapped players, so these wins are not vs 2s, 3s, 4s for the most part unless someone is ducking me. I wish there was a better stats breakdown on the website, as well as player comparisons across the US....that would be cool to see, but probably way time consuming to put together for every player out there. I think I calculated if I lost my next two matches which would put me at 200 lifetime matches, that I would be at 80.5%...if I win them probably like 81.5% or something close...the site is down now for me so I can't check.

I am more excited about going for a 6 point 9 ball break tonight to be honest lol. Most likely I will hit it too hard and uncontrolled and get maybe 2....but we shall see! Good luck to everyone tonight.

I played horrible last night. BCA 8 ball. Got 46 points out 50 possible. Rattled lots of balls but the other team was pretty weak so I got more opportunities to win than I should have. I need to play more 8 ball to get into that mindset for Nationals this year. I didn't even know the BCA rules when I went last year. lol

Tonight is BCA 9 ball. I am hotter than the sun so far in that one. My record is 50-13 over 7 weeks played. Play 3 games vs each of the three players on the opposing team and loser breaks (rack your own). Everyone plays even so it definitely favors the better player.. Last season I was 68-38 I believe when we played 6 games per night.

Nah, you can fluctuate as a 6/7, just as you can as an 8/9 in 9b. As a low/new 7, some think that they have to run out everything and put undue pressure on themselves, which just ends up backfiring. At least that's the problem I had for a while.

JBB: In my LO's territory, I can see the stats on all players on all teams in the area. Once in a while, I go through the rosters and locations to see if there's anywhere close by that I can stop by to find a game. I'm a little lazy, so usually nowhere's close enough. :embarrassed2:

Edit: On the bright side.. I started off 4-1 last night in 8b for the masters team, only to let my opponent get back to 6-6 before I got lucky for an early 9 combo on my second shot.

I'm a 5/4 in APA in the Austin area, I just started playing during last summer session. I lost my first 9 ball match in about 11 matches going back to last session last night. I've been steam rolling people this session and caught someone who wouldn't miss last night or hooked me on what seemed like every miss. I've been trying to get to a SL 5 in 9 and for some weird reason after all these wins it will not surprise me if I move up after getting smashed last night. I did get revenge in 8 ball though and beat the top player on the other team. I've really been working on playing smart in 8 ball (don't have a single BnR in 2.5 sessions, we play on pretty unforgiving 8 footers) and although I may not shoot as well as some, I def outsmart just about everyone I play. Much better than when I used to have the defense is for wusses mentality and taking on every shot.
