"He" meaning Earl. I know he loves to run and claims to run 7 miles a day, but after watching him against Dechaine last weekend I have to say, he looked exhausted. I saw on his FB page that he is wondering if this is too much. I didn't respond, but I have to agree with him. I think he's overdoing the conditioning by running so much.
At his age, his body just can't recover from that kind of punishment. I know first hand what it's like to overtrain. You keep pushing through it, but every day you just get worse until you reach a point were your body shuts down and you have to stop training. I have found that it takes a very long time to get over the physiological effects of overtraining.
Earl is now in incredible physical condition, and he can maintain that with minimal effort on his part. Earl being Earl, though, I'm sure there's a bit of compulsive behavior involved with all this training. I think he could get a lot more help with his game by cutting way back on the running at this point and taking up something like Tai Chi or yoga, along with lots of sitting meditation. It would help his mental game as well as his ability to physically relax and to be more flexible.
I'm curious what others think about this.
