From the source:
I sent Laurie an email and asked her about the satin SW cues. I asked her to explain them and their existance (or lack thereof) to dispell all rumors, etc...BTW, these are GREAT players if you get hold of one.
Below is her response:
Thank you for coming to the source Joe!
We do Satins when we want to train someone to do a new job or just switch things up a bit. We got just one group out recently. I don't take orders for them.
Following is a "form Letter" I use to explain them:
Explain a satin---
Hello:
Looks like you have a "Satin Finish" cue. Single 1/32" white line at the joint.
-It's a seconds line that we do once or twice a year. They are unfinished, ie. sealed with epoxy and oil; the same way we treat our shafts.
-they will get dirty like a shaft and are subject to the environment [could warp so don't leave it in your car! ]
-the birdeye maple has mineral marks or the grain may run out a little. The wood is not good enough for a regular cue but much too nice to throw away.
-the cues are assembled in the same manner as our regular cues but not pre-calculated for weight. They come with 1 shaft 13mm.
-My husband called these cues "pacfiers". Gave the person something decent to hit a ball with while waiting for a regular cue.
-People love them. They are almost too much trouble for us to do but I still try to get at least one group a year out. Also, I try to send them to individuals who will keep them. I am not happy to hear people spray laquer on them and try to sell them as firsts.
-The only way I could positively identify one would be to have it sent it here. Probably not worth all that, especially if you like the way it hits...play with it!
Thank you,
Laurie Franklin
