Woolen vs Worsted Cloth

Hey everyone. I'm trying to find out the real difference in play when going from woolen to worsted. My wife agreed on a new pool table in the living room, BUT she had to pick the cloth color. Of course I limited her options to lighter non-red colors, but I knew traditional green and tournament blue were off the table (no pun intended). I saved some money and got the color she liked by going with the woolen w/ teflon.

Our league tables are all worsted cloth and play pretty fast, but my table at home seems to play just as fast. I can't really tell the difference in drawing the ball, but I could be wrong... Does it come down to durability? Should I expect the performance to drop once the pilling starts?

What are your thoughts?
 
What is the make/model of the cloth?

Someone here probably has experience with it, but can't give you a good comparison without the make/model of the cloth.

BTW, if your wife agreed to a pool table in the living room, KEEP THE WIFE!

I retract my previous statement. I had forgotten about the living room part.... Keep her...

and does she have a sister?
 
I think it's time to get the terms straight...
....I have played a lot of hours on worsted cloth...and it's woolen.

I think you mean 'nappy' cloth ( directional or not ) when you're talking
about 'woolen'.
Probably ALL the cloth you've played any form of billiards on has been
composed of mainly wool....often with a nylon mixture and sometimes
Teflon coated.

The only billiard cloth of any quality that I've heard of that is not wool
was called 'Janus'....made of cotton and used about 80 or 90 years ago.

It's Championship Invitational with Teflon. 75% wool / 25% nylon.

And yes, the wife is a keeper. If I could only get her to understand why I need more cues I'd be golden!

Well, I thought it was worth clarifying...this game is confusing enough.

A few years ago, their was a thread about inside 'english'....
...turned out that some people thought it was the opposite of what other
people thought it was...and the thread didn't get intelligible till it
got straightened out.

...and we had a thread to establish that when 'english' refers to spin...
....it should be spelled with a small 'e'.
 
So I guess I shouldn't bring up picks, wefts, warps, filling or end yarns.
Damn useless trivial information.

I got a feeling that you know a lot about this subject, Mr Bond.
If you've already posted about it, a link would be nice.
....if not, a post would be nice....perhaps even a thread...:)
 
I wouldn't mind writing up a nice long piece on it, but I'm kinda tied up with the show today, so I'll come back later with some geeky information to absorb.:cool:

When will you guys learn that the wife gets to pick the color for the pool table cover NOT the cloth!!!!

Then the table matches the room when the cover is on and it is protected from all of the other projects that a pool table is good for.

Haha. I play enough pool that the cover stays off. Besides, The steel gray is starting to grow on me.
 
I still like my Simonis Wine colored cloth. Gray isn't too bad either..... the worst I've ever seen was black....that was just horrendous!
 
Worsted cloth is like playing on glass. Nappy backed cloth is like playing on grass.

Black is bad, but have you ever seen the "brites" cloth?? Neon yellow, orange, green? EEEWW. I've also never understood how you can play on a giant team logo with different colored rails.

The nap is playing well now, but as soon as it starts to bug me I'll take the $300 hit for the simonis or tour edition. I noticed the guy that installed it stretched it pretty tight which speeds it up but also breaks down the fibers faster.

I'm ready for the Simonis 960 to come out (If it ever does).
