I know this has been asked and answered many times before im sure, but what is the difference between all the threads, and why do some brands, such as pechauer and Mezz use theyre own style, which makes it difficult to swap shafts if the occasion ever needed it. I have used all threads, from uniloc ( which is garbage IMHO) to 3/8 11. I like the bigger threads better, but i also like the 5/16X14 and X18, it all depends on the cue maker or brand, but is this all in my head, or does wood make a difference or what??

Because they can.
There is no one best joint pin - it's a matter of personal preference.

Bastard pins now are for brand recognition and gimmicks.
There is no reason to add to what's available already ( except maybe
matrial ).
 
Here's an off-the-wall question:

Q.: Can a bastard pin be removed / changed out in favor of a more universal pin (e.g. 5/16x14)?

Someone told me that some cue repairman can slowly heat up the pin and the shaft insert to soften the epoxy holding them, and then twist them out and away from the wood while the epoxy is still warm and soft. Then the hole can accept the new pin / insert, to be installed in the normal manner.

Thoughts?

no.................

once you heat the epoxy to remove the pin............ you destroy it.......... at that point you must drill plug and re tap for the new pin..............

Correct, epoxy is a thermosetting polymer. Once cured it can never change between states like a thermoplastic. The application of heat or certain solvents will only break it down.

I know that once the epoxy has cured, using heat to soften actually destroys it, so yes, it would have to be removed and the hole cleaned up / redrilled or retapped / prepared for new epoxy. I tried to imply that with "...to be installed in the normal manner" but I guess I should've clarified.

Thanks for the answers so far, though. I do have a couple cues that I'd like to have someone do this for.
