How, specifically, have these books helped people? Anyone go from really weak to really strong?

"Inner Game Of Tennis" reinforced to me that the way I already thought was the correct way for me to focus on things. All self-doubt was erased and I also picked up a few helpful tips. It also helped that I played a little tennis and I understood the points made as they related to pool and to tennis.

I'm looking for a pool related book that is mostly geared towards working on your mental game. I'm looking for something that is going to help with your mental state of mind with everything from sitting there waiting for your turn to your pre shot mental routine, execution, the killer instinct and staying focused during your match.

Any suggestions?

Thanks y'all, John

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this one yet; "Sports Psyching" by Thomas Tutko.

I've heard a lot of great things about the Play Great Pool book. I think I will start with that one then work on reading some of the others mentioned here. The inner game of tennis has some great reviews as long as you can replace the word tennis with pool like someone mentioned in an earlier post.

Thanks for the responses so far guys. Keep them coming!

John

After my reply and seeing others perhaps a little more detail might help.

Play Great Pool discusses many detailed methods around the pool stroke mechanics, pre-shot routines, etc. There is also excellent material on mental preparation for competition and how to deal with things that come up in a match.

The Pro Book has some very good but brief material on mental preparation and in-match strategies. Of course the shot material is outstanding and was of great benefit to me in the pool wasteland called Saskatchewan.

Inner Game and Pleasures are outstanding in their coverage of how we learn and how we deal with pressure. They don't really address stroke mechanics per se, but tell you about how to practice and learn.

In general I feel these books to be complimenary. I also like the book that BB suggests  but perhaps for other reasons .

I agree, it helped me to learn to focus. What I was thinking when I first read the thread was, that it helped me to "feel" the game more and not focus on mechanics during performance of my stroke and play.
I've read Small Motions four times and consider it one of the worst things ever written on the game of pool.

How much time do you put in just practicing? In most sports confidence comes from time put into proper practice. Something I need to work on.

Not sure the is a right book. Unless you know your personality and the book covers how to help you. There is no one way to approach the mental game. What works for one person may not work for the next. Some people play better in ZEN mode and some play better pissed off

All good books and advice.
read everything.
then..
when you are able to not think about it
you are ready to play your best.

My girlfriend bought me a copy of The Inner Game Of Tennis tonight. I'll give that a read.

I also want to try out Mark Wilson's Play Great Pool. For those of you that have read it, is it really worth the money?
