Underdogs rise: More upsets rock Pacman 10-Ball

By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

Friday, September 5, 2014

UNDERDOGS don't always end up under as more unrated players pulled off rocking upsets over pool sharks the likes of current World No. 6 Lee Vann Corteza of Davao City and legendary Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante.

It has indeed become anybody's game in the Sarangani Cong. Manny Pacquiao-sponsored MP Cup GenSan Tuna Festival International Open 10-Ball Tournament after heavy favorites were sent to the losers' bracket.

Defending champion Corteza, a World Team Championship silver medal performer in Beijing, China last month, fell at the skilled hands of Cebu City's veteran internationalist Warren Kiamco over a capacity crowd at the Pacman Multi-Purpose Gymnasium in Tambler Village, General Santos City Thursday night.

Former world champions Reyes and Bustamante, for their part, bowed to Jundel Mazon, 5-9, and Jordan Legaspi, 6-9, respectively.

Corteza, Reyes and Bustamante were still waiting for their opponents in the losers' bracket as of yesterday presstime.

Germany's Ralf Souquet was also relegated to the losers' side after losing to Romeo Silvano, 4-9, in the alternate-break format 10-ball singles event that stakes a total cash prize of $30,000.

Surigao City's Dennis Orcollo, 2011 World 8-Ball champion, however, advanced in the winners' group along with Laguna's two-time world champion Ronnie Alcano, Manila's William Millares, Canada's John Morra, Jomar de Ocampo, Michael Feliciano, Jeffrey Ignacio, Jerico Banares, Zamboanga City's Roberto Gomez, Antonio "Nickoy" Lining, Renemar David and J.V. Vicedo.

Orcollo routed Patrick Gonzales, 9-1, while Alcano crushed Max Eberlo, 9-3, and Millares defeated Resty Labastida, 9-6.

Morra, meanwhile, took a 9-5 win over RobertoInline image 1 Ancheta even as De Ocampo outclassed John Salazar, 9-4.

Feliciano, who upset World No. 5 Carlo Biado Wednesday, kept his fiery form by overwhelming World No. 11 Johann Chua, 9-5.

In other results, Ignacio beat Cagayan de Oro City's Demosthenes Pulpul (9-6); Banares edged South Korean Ga Young Kim (9-8); Gomez whipped Thorsten Hohmann tormentor Lauro Bongay of Davao City (9-4); Lining stamped 2014 World 9-Ball semi-finalist Elmer Haya of Zamboanga City (9-0); Renemar David nipped Ramil Gallego (9-8) and Vicedo overcame Napoleon Labrador of Davao City (9-4).

World Pool Association (WPA)-sanctioned games were going on in the double elimination cuefest as of this writing.

On the other hand, preparations shift to high gear for the staging of the MP Cup GenSan Tuna Festival International Open Doubles 10-Ball Tournament where eight-division world boxing champion Pacquiao will pair with Marlon Manalo to lead the cast of competing pairs that will contest the $40,000 top purse of the $100,000-rich tournament.
