Marty is a talented guy, he is a good table mechanic and shoots straight too.

I should first thank Marty for stepping up to sponsor the Mezz West State Tour for the season. We will also have him in commentary on a future tour stop - to do some questions and answers. Marty's 'Q', when played with, I noticed an immediate ability to produce short jumps with ease and an array of other shots were possible.

To Marty's behalf, I know that one difference is in the 'weave' of the carbon fiber - a stronger 'pattern', providing additional tensile strength and durability. There's also an upcoming addendum to the patent on the weave for his brand. I believe the 'G10' tip and ferrule provides a good marriage with the carbon fiber on the front end. I have played with it and loved it but I forgot to get one from him when I saw him. It's super light at 4oz and 6oz, 9mm or 14mm.

Each cue is hand assembled and Marty takes custom orders.

What Marty has said to me is, the materials are cutting edge and the cue is as strong or stronger than any brand right now, that he's also willing to guarantee the product to some extent. I think pros, pool hustlers, artistic and league players will be very attracted to this cue. The road or money player might rely on it.

Our promotion of 'Jump Q' on POV Pool plus a video by Abram Diaz on YouTube is turning some orders to this product. Generally, if a product is of good quality, it holds up in the market. It wont take long for the word of mouth to spread if this is true.

An official comparison of products may be coming soon, but I'm not in charge of his marketing. He's not big on the forums yet and we are helping him to get in soon.

Erm, care to actually answer the question? The design of the 9mm looks like a direct ripoff of the Dr. Popper jump cue. Did Marty ever talk with Mark about why the Dr. Popper jump cue is so good? I talked with Mark earlier this year about his jump cue, and basically all I see is a rip-off of a known product.

It looks very close to what Mark is selling but I wouldn't be so harsh about it. Ultralight jump cues have been out for more than a decade.

It is inevitable when someone brings a product to market that works that someone else won't bring out something similar. Sometimes it's a straight up copy just to get on the sales and sometimes it's a product that the maker feels is an improvement over the other person's product.

That's simply how the cycle of innovation works.

Straight up copies serve the market by providing some or all of the the benefit to a broader range of people often at a lower cost to the public. (and yes often copies are just straight up junk that gives little to none of the benefit, that's the downside)

Innovative products that build on what came before serve to move the market forward by pushing all competitors to up their game so to speak.

So, while this cue does look pretty much the same as Mark's Dr. Popper, I wouldn't be so hard on the maker as it is simply human nature and in fact encouraged by society to emulate that which is successful.

It's encouraged to move ahead, not steal others ideas and pretend you're doing something unique. Until Marty Carey decides to explain why he is using Mark's design and ideology for creating that 'Q'. I'll sit here and have the opinion that this is just another 'knock' off.

Even if it is just a knock-off there is nothing inherently wrong with that. Think about it logically for a second and look around your house. Think of all the things you use every day and the origins of them?

Can you name anything where there is only one source for it that you use daily? Anything where there is only one brand and one company making it?

I can't think of anything off the top of my head. That's because what makes humans able to exist as we do is the fact that we are able to exactly copy other humans when we see something successful. Be that a better way to grow crops, better insulation for our homes, making a light bulb etc....

Do you get mad at General Electric for copying Phillips and vice versa? Of for Firestone copying Toyo?

I understand that you know Mark, so do I. I also had to deal with the copying of the Bunjee which was itself a derivative of other jump cues. And copies of all my Instroke cases flourish throughout the marketplace. Poor Joe Whitten has to endure clones of his work being sold rampantly.

But that's simply how the world works and it can't work any other way. It's simply impossible to stop other humans from looking sideways and copying that which they like. And as much as I have lost through copying I still think it's immoral to try and stop copying as it is the basis for continued innovation.
 
In any case, the Dr Popper jump cue was really bad. I would like to try one of these out and see if it is indeed better/improved version.

Not in our testing. We sat at Fury's shop one day and tested them against a dozen brands of balls and not a single ball was damaged due to the G10 ferrule/tip used on the jump cues.

Using the phenolic ferrule/tips on a BREAK cue and for breaking did cause a few cracks in ONE cue ball and that was with excessive breaking force.

So until I see actual evidence to the contrary I will stick with the opposite opinion.

Thanks for the feedback on this, John. I'm aware that jump shots are significantly softer than breaking as well, so less stress on the equipment. For jumping I would surmise that G10 would be adequate equipment, but breaking is another matter.

As mentioned before I'm not 'marketing' so I'm not going to speak for Marty. If he wants to release a statement to me about Dr. Popper, any other cues or the evolution of its design, that's different.

So, 'Hits em hard', If you think Marty is ripping off, why don't you call and ask him. He's more than willing to take calls and emails. In fact, why don't you tell us how your conversation was.

So I am halfway through this thread before I realize it was not Mariah Carey releasing a jump cue....

That would have rocked!

john, I was merely thanking you for the feedback on the research you've already done. my comment in reference to calling marty yourself is directed at 'hits em hard'.
