If Professional Pool is a sport, why is it that in the big events the players must wear dress pants and leather shoes?

I agree

I agree - they should be in uniforms like jerseys with numbers. Oh wait a minute that has been done in what Bonus something :)

What sport do you see people in shorts and flip-flops? Well besides beach sports like volleyball and surfing.

All joking aside I feel it adds some class to the sport to see the players in at least vest.

Because as you called it "Professional". The things you list are what some view as professional. I would be much more satisfied using a dress code that called for polo shirts and no blue jeans. Shorts would be acceptable, but should be black or khaki in color. Shoes must be in good condition with no damage or dirt.

I would call this the "Golf Dress Code". The problem is that the golfers that you see are all sponsored so the clothes that you see them wear are typically brand new from top to bottom and the golfer didn't have to pay a dime for any of it.

In my 50+ yrs. of playing in or spectating at Upscale Tournaments,
the Players whom are well-dressed invariably comport themselves
in a more gentlemanly manner than those dressed in Ripped Jeans,
Cut-off Shorts, Gangsta attire, and such.
This is MY observation and mine alone. Everyone is entitled to an
opinion on "attire", be it proper or otherwise.

dress codes

I'm talking sports clothes and performance sneakers, instead of slacks and leather shoes,

I don't mean we should be playing with white wife-beaters and jeans

I think I know why women's beach volleyball gets more TV coverage than pool....

Because their cleats tear up the carpet.

Which begs the question "If pool is a sport, why is it played on carpet?"

Because on grass you'd need cleats.

KAZAM the Dress Code thing is being banged around again. I honestly do not understand people who are called professionals, in any sport not understand the basic fact that if you look like some bum who was down at the local soup kitchen for your last meal.

It is not a good image for a Professional Athlete. But then I also understand some Pool players fighting this dress code thing because they are not paid like other professional athletes.

THREE SUGGESTS.

Take up a sport that pays real money

Quit Pool, and get a 9-5 job with a steady pay check and benefits. BTW even Wal-Mart has a dress code when working.

Suck it up an compete with the REQUIRED DRESS CODE, or expect to not be allowed to Play Pro Pool.

Edit:
Pool is not yet a sport, thanks to idiocy and incompetence in the governing bodies and the unprofessional behaviour of all involved. Some of us hope for it to become a sport one day, but that day is far, far away. That being said, even if it was a sport, it is not an athletic sport, thus athletic gear suited for more active sports is not needed.

Reasons for wearing dress pants and black shoes:

1. Black pants and dress shoes look nicer than ragged sneakers and sweatpants.
2. When people dress nicely, it gives the event a professional and respectable look.
3. People who look respectable and professional attract sponsors.
4. Sponsors makes it possible to hold even nicer events in the future.
5. If there is no dresscode who knows what kind of outfits people would wear, I dread even imagining it. Watch "people of Walmart" on youtube. Black pants and dress shoes is a reasonable minimum that most people have at least one pair of in their closet. Would you want people to buy some kind of athetic jersey, shorts or sneakers specifically to play pool, or are you an "anything goes" sort of fellow?
6. Dress pants and black shoes are not uncomfortable to wear, nor do they restrict movement in any way. Is it THAT much of a hassle to press a pair of pants and shine a pair of shoes?
7. Wearing shorts and tank tops playing pool just looks ridiculous. Do you really want to see the 300 pound couch potato of the pool hall in that outfit? You allready have to put up with plumbers cracks, now you want hairy manlegs and armpits too?
8. If people have to put on proper clothes, they may even shower before they come to the pool hall. Less BO to contend with.

Very well said....I agree.

You don't have to be wearing dress pants and leather shoes to not look like a bum at the soup kitchen. I'm sure there
is a happy medium. Golfers don't wear dress pants and leather shoes and don't look like bums at the soup kitchen.
The corporations seam to think that the golfers look professional. The way golfers dress allows for plenty of personality
to be displayed, without everyone looking like clones. Give me a break with the soup kitchen BS.

If pool wants young people taking up the sport, telling them they will have to wear dress pants and leather shoes
isn't the way to do it.

I'm a little conflicted on the dress codes for pool. While I understand the intent, the highway to hell is often paved with good intentions. All the reasons in the world doesn't change the fact that it promotes class warfare (which is why so many refer to people out of dress code as "bums, homeless, soup kitchens, etc."), and tribalism to keep anyone from being an individual. I admit, I kind of like when people dress up for an event. It brings nostalgia of a time when people dressed their best whenever they went out in public and it does "look" classy. But looks can be deceiving and I just feel that the spirit, and overall objectives of staying classy get lost when you focus solely on what someone is wearing.

Well the point is simples as I said, "Suck it up an compete with the REQUIRED DRESS CODE, or expect to not be allowed to Play Pro Pool."\

Heck The Walt Disney Company has a dress, and grooming all employees must adhere to. Want to work for the Mouse, you have to comply with a dress, and grooming code.

Even Disney Guests have to adhere to a dress, and conduct code to visit Disneyland.

Reasons for wearing dress pants and black shoes:

1. Black pants and dress shoes look nicer than ragged sneakers and sweatpants. How did those become the only options? lol so one extreme or the other...
2. When people dress nicely, it gives the event a professional and respectable look. Do tennis players look professional? Or should they dress like they're going to a funeral too?
3. People who look respectable and professional attract sponsors. How's that been working out for pool so far? While that might seem like it makes sense, it just doesn't work.
4. Sponsors makes it possible to hold even nicer events in the future. See above.
Again one extreme or the other...
6. Dress pants and black shoes are not uncomfortable to wear, nor do they restrict movement in any way. Is it THAT much of a hassle to press a pair of pants and shine a pair of shoes? yes, dress shoes are not only uncomfortable, leather bottoms can slip on carpet. The point he is making is, why is pool the only sport wearing leather dress shoes?
7. Wearing shorts and tank tops playing pool just looks ridiculous. Do you really want to see the 300 pound couch potato of the pool hall in that outfit? You allready have to put up with plumbers cracks, now you want hairy manlegs and armpits too? Guessing you only own dress clothes and wife beaters lol cause you clearly think these are the only two options.
8. If people have to put on proper clothes, they may even shower before they come to the pool hall. Less BO to contend with. I'm beginning to think you don't have many friends.

It's no wonder pool is in the state it's in...

Marc, I'm right behind you. The footwear is so important. When professional players practice or gamble, what kind of shoes do they choose to wear? Sneakers. Wonder why? Hmmm

All this arguing over something as simple asadresscode is the reason Pool in the year 2014 Is going no where. The reason main stream Corporate Sponsors avoid pool like it was the A.I.D.S. Virus.

JMHO

I don't think what you wrote is what you meant to write. I think you left out the word "Not".

Since the dress codes are about the same over the past 20 years and pool has gone nowhere... Maybe there is reason to complain? Hmmmm
