Congratulations Jeremy on a nice win this weekend at Sandcastle Billiards. :thumbup:

Also a shout out to hot-seat winner Phil Davis for his impressive 2nd place finish. Phil may have let Jeremy off the hook, somewhat, by agreeing to play just one race to 9 in the final to decide the championship instead of two potential races to 8. But they had a long ride back home to conside and it was getting late...

It was nice to see my two CT homeboys duking it out in this final match.

Great host venue and a terrific stream from Ed at Sandcastle. :thumbup:

I hadn't really expected him to make the Mosconi 5, but things are looking good for him now. It's hard to see him getting cut if he does well in the US Open.
 
Jeremy is such a strong player and a very classy face for the sport. Congrats!


Not only that - he kicks my ass every time he has played me....

Jeremy may have won the event. I however feel for Travis. Not sure how much he plays but to lose two key matches being on the hill with a lead each time is heartbreaking. Know most of us have done it. Still deeply painful. For the most part, he outplayed both Phil and Jeremy. Maybe next year.

I want to echo the comments from the Cardiac Kid...in my view, Travis McKinney outplayed both of his opponents (Phil Davis & Jeremy Sossei) in his last two (2) matches.

Travis appears to play with much confidence and it was surprising and disappointing to watch the outcome of those final matches in which he lost unexpectedly.

I hope that he takes some sort of positive message from his losses and continues his fine play in other events. He is most definitely a talented player.

Watching the end of both matches was sad. Yes, he played with great confidence right up to two key shots. First, his position on the final eight ball against Phil. A simple draw out from the rail would have made him a winner. Choosing to stop the cue ball and shoot the nine was simply wrong. Second, choosing to roll the cue ball forward on the seven ball against Jeremy was also wrong. Stopping the cue ball so he had a much easier angle to "bounce" the cue ball off the rail going to the eight was a smarter choice. Drawing the cue ball as hard as he did doomed him. JMHO.

What were the TPAs that Jeremy was shooting in the semis or finals?? I know he is in consideration for Mosconi cup and hope he was shooting in the high 800s+.... If you were handicapping would he be favored or the under dog against the other 7?

Chris,

Watched several matches on the stream. Doubt very highly he shot in the 800's. My guess is low to middle 700's. Haven't watched Justin Hall. My guess is Jeremy is low man on the totem pole. Wouldn't favor him against any of the other players. Sorry.

Yes, but I'll bet you weren't at the Steinway Classic 10-ball event in August where Sossei easily beat Shane.

Jeremy is the third best player on the Joss Tour behind Dechaine and Shaw, and based on his track record, ahead of Earl. Jeremy also finished 7th in the last US Open 9-ball.

By my rankings, Sossei is third best of the Mosconi eight, behind only Shane and Bergman. The strength of the Joss Tour was on display once again at Turning Stone, where three of the Top 4 players on the Joss tour placed in the Top 5 (Shaw, Dechaine, Strickland).

Shane and Bergman aside, which of the others in the Mosconi eight have collected any big scalps in 2014 on the big tables?
 
The field here was not that strong. On day 2 Sossei shook off the brutal performance when he lost to Mike Miller who shoots AA speed. The thing is Sossei is supposed to win in this field pretty easily. Imagine Dechaine Earl Morris or Archer in this event. It would have been a masacre.

As far as other big table events others can win what's left? US Open? If you wanna make a wager on the any 5 young guns who are potential Mosconi members placing in the top 8 there you got action.

Believe the question The Refro asked was "If you were handicapping..." For the cash, I like all the other seven against Jeremy. Perhaps I'm wrong. I've never played him. Everyone has an off day. Watching him over two days on the live stream left me somewhat underwhelmed. My feeling is the Mosconi event is more like gambling than a tournament. I stated earlier on this thread, Travis played nearly well enough to win. His weakness' showed up late in each match. Jeremy appeared to be the third best player in this event. At least on those days. As always, JMHO.

So Phil Davis and Mike Miller for Mosconi cup then.

Strange Davis agreed to play just one set in finals. Why he would cheat himself of a second chance of winning the title? He's a great individual so he surely has his reasons. I'd crawl over broken glass to play pool for a title and the cash.

As he and Jeremy travelled together to the event, taking an additional hour or so to play an additional match seems foolish. I'd be surprised if they didn't just "play for the trophy".

Thanks Lyn thats what I was wondering... I usually only see the TV table at DCC and The Open (up close) and well of course every stream and as such I have not seen Jeremy play... We may have done matches with him and I just don't recall him... Same thing with Bergman... I really haven't seen him play in person and don't know him.. So all I can go on are his wins and the chatter about him here on AZ and on Facebook.....

Gotcha. Might have misinterpreted you. Nonetheless, the Mosconi is much more like tournament play than gambling. Ten minutes of bad play will lose you a match at the Mosconi, just like in a tournament, but in gambling (long race or an ahead race) you have a chance to recover.

Seems I've seen much more of Jeremy than you, as I go to a lot of events in the Northeast. Fine player who is a true giant killer. It's giant killers that I want on the Mosconi team. Shane is, of course, #1, and Bergman has collected several big scalps this year, but besides them, only Sossei has beaten some of the biggest names.

PS Travis is a friend of mine at Amsterdam Billiards and I'd love to see him win something. Good player and a good guy. We'll all celebrate when he snaps off something big!

You'd bet that, of Bergman, Hall, Shuff, Dominguez, and Sossei, none will make it into the top 8 of the U.S. Open?

Or Phil dumped so his buddy had some Mosconi credibility??? Why not right. I didn't see them play, but again I wouldn't give up the potential second set advantage to my brother. He gave up a second chance at winning it all and that is nonsense.

Great minds think alike and yes I would bet it to the sky. These guys can't play elite world class pool consistently enough to matter there. Sure they all beat some big names once in awhile. Look at how many big events they enter. Even if they won 20% of their matches they would claim some big scalps.

To move up in that field you have to be in dead pump for days on end and still get a bit lucky now and then. They just don't have the consistency. Look at Mika's win where he won from the loser's side 13 sets to take it down. The one exception on your list could be Oscar Dominguez who is more established. Still I'd bet it doesn't happen.
