Alex Pagulayan is going to be in the house. Yay! :clapping::clapping::clapping:

Max Eberle will be the one to watch, having just returned from a few weeks hitting balls in the Phlippines. He's in dead-punch stroke right now. ;)

Nikos from Greece did well last year. I'm going to be examining his action on the baize.

Karl Boyes seems in recent times like he's gunning really hard to be included on that Mosconi Cup this year. He'll be giving it his all, I'm sure. :grin-square:

I'm glad to see Frankie Hernandez in the competition. He's always had a fierce break. Did you know his handsome young son just landed a role on "Gotham"? Good looks run in the Hernandez family.

If Jayson Shaw can maintain his composure, he will rise in the charts. He came in third last year. I have noticed when male pro players are in love, happy at home, they do well in pool. I saw it happen with Ralf Souquet when he fell in love. Having just become a father, Jayson will be the man to watch in 2014. :)

Interesting to see Scott Smith competing. Good to see him on the East Coast, however. I like Scott.

But you want to know who I'm rooting for this year? I would love, love, love to see Skylar Woodard be the youngest winner of the U.S. Open. I like this kid a lot. He is genuinely a nice guy. He hasn't been influenced or tainted by the occupational hazards that accompany the pool lifestyle. This is my fave :happydance:

There are a lot of regional shortstops in this player roster that have no shot of winning a tournament of this caliber, yet they come every year to the Open because, like most of us on this forum, they are passionate about pool and love the atmosphere of this tournament. To compete against all the great players in the world is an opportunity that is not afforded in other sports.

Are you gonna be there this year JAM? It's only right down the road from ya?

We were thinking about driving down for next weekend, the semis and finals. It depends on my workload and our Mickey dog. We were thinking about bringing Mickey with us, but he's still a little young to travel.

I love that tournament. This is the best time of year to go too. It looks like there are some really cool players in attendance this year.

Anyone who's never been to the Open, this is like the Who's Who of Pool, not only the players, but it's the pool people who attend. I met Weenie Beenie there in 2002. What a great time I had sitting on the rail with him. It is an experience you will never forget. That's for sure.

There's still 5 spots left, how bout you get that monster of yours off the couch & back where he belongs:cool:

U.S. Open Player's List

Evgeny Stalev was in the states a few months ago...saw him and he competed in a tourney @ Steinway if I recall correctly...??

Wonder why he hasn't signed up to play...in my view, he "could" be a serious threat to go deep...??

Hope y'all make it down! It's a great field I think & having Jay & Scott back is awesome. Only 5 spots left. Haven't been able to post much as I've been working & will be heading to the Marriott in couple hours.

No Ko brothers ,, or China TPE players ,,

The elites/ marquee/pedigree players dominate the major tourneys. When was the last time a WPA major (W9B, W8B,W10B, All Japan, China Open, US Open) was won by relative unknown? One would have to go back as far back as almost 10 years ago when Daryl Peach and Wu won their world titles.
I do not think this US Open will be any different
It is a no brainer, you can more or less narrow it down to following potential winners , give or take some names

FRONTRUNNERS/ 1st FAVORITES
1. Shane Van Boening - USA
2. Earl Strickland - USA
3. Efren Reyes - Philippines
4. Johnny Archer - USA
5. Francisco Bustamante - Philipines
6. Mika Immonen - Finland
7. Darren Appleton - England

30. Corey Deuel - USA
36. Ralf Souquet - Germany
60. Nick Van Den Berg - Netherlands
107. Alex Pagulayan - Canada

NOTE: OK, so included the old dogs Efren, Buste, Earl, Parica but you never write those old dogs off. IMHO any of the old dogs have better chance of winning than Shane winning 3rd consecutive title

DARK HORSES/ 2nd FAVORITES
37. Warren Kiamco - Philippines
17. Nikos Economopoulos - Greece

I suppose with most things 80:20 rule applies here. 20% of players have chance of winning while the other 80% have almost no chance or are "dead money"
:)

Waleed Majed of Qatar I thought should be on that list along with the KO's, Chang's and the other Asian Killers! It would make the USO a real cream of the crop field! Corteza of PI finished strong last USO @ 2nd not playing????
I think Waleed Majed is same person as #10 Waleed Alars

Maybe the KO brothers will never come back to the states. Johnnyt
+1 LOL
Dennis Hatch, Huntrer Lombardo not playing? Would like to see Mitch Ellerman play in there as well...
Lombardo is in at #119

Just one spot left after four very skilled Chinese players sign up:

124. Dang Jinhu – China
125. Li He Wen – China
126. Liu Hai Wen – China
127. Wang Can - China

See post #101 in this thread for the other 123 players.

Glad to see that Alex Pagulayan is signed up!

We'll get to see if a snooker player can make it in the pool world :D

Not too much dead money in this event. Someone is going to have to win it the old fashon way...earn it. Johnnyt

Right on, JohnnyT. While a few choose to dwell on who's not present, the fact remains that this is one killer field. There will, for practical purposes, be no easy draws, and the big guns will be drawing each other by Wednesday, if not sooner.

Earl, based on 2014 results, is the fourth best player on the Joss Northeast Tour, a tour that is dominated by Dechaine and Shaw. On that rare occasion that neither wins, it is usually Sossei that wins the title. Earl is winless on the 2014 Joss tour. Shaw, Dechaine, and Sossei all had top 10 finishes in the 2013 US Open, while Earl did not. When Earl played a challenge match against Dechaine earlier this year, Mike beat him 25-11.

So, obviously, Earl is one of the favorites while Dechaine, Shaw, and Sossei are dark horses.

Thanks for a good laugh.
