I'm considering going to the DCC in January but a friend of mine mentioned that the weather in Elizabeth, IN is terribly that time of year. Snowy, windy and freezing. Can anyone confirm this?

That's true OUTSIDE but

The games are contested INSIDE where there is no rain, snow or wind!

Last year want bad at all. Of course it was a little cold but no snow or rain that I can remember. Make the trip. It's an awesome time.

How's the weather in Sweden at same time? You certainly won't be hanging by the pool (swimming that is), but the DCC is the best run event out there. Bring an extra jacket and stay inside.

I'm guessing that your biggest concern is air travel. I would suggest that if you are playing in the tourney, to come as early as your schedule allows.

If there is bad weather, there might be airport delays.

Weather in the area is a crap shoot that time of year. It could be in 50s-60s F to below 0 F and snow. And it could go from those extremes one day to the next.

With that said, the DCC should be on every pool players bucket list.

It's FREEZING cold. FREEZING. If you're driving, especially via West Virginia mountains, good luck. I saw 18-wheelers slide off the mountains on the icy roads.

It's worse than riding the Rebel Yell at King's Dominion amusement park.:eek::eek:

That's certainly not true every year. I have been to the DCC in shorts before. Weather near Louisville is a roll of the dice that time of year. The average high for Feb is 48ºF and average low is 30ºF.

Scary, don't be scared. It will be like summer compared to Sweden.

I don't know, but when I think of January, I can't remember a time when someone could wear shorts outside in that region of the country. :D

It is traditionally cold in January and February this time of year in that neck of the woods.

That said, if you're comfy in shorts in the wintertime, it could be that the weather temperature may be *unseasonably* warm for that time of year. Generally, though, I think you can count on January being freezing cold, especially if you have to drive through mountains to get there. :embarrassed2:

Once inside the venue, however, I am sure it is warm and comfortable. :)

Last time I was there (several years ago) they had a major ice storm that left thousands of homes and businesses in the area without power. Seems like they had several inches of snow on the roads at the same time. That would probably be a worst case scenario, however, and not the typical January.

Well the numbers don't lie... average high of 48º should not scare anyone off. I live 2.5 hours from the venue so I think I understand the waether patterns here pretty well. I have been to all but the first couple DCCs and weather has never stopped me from going one time.

I just don't want people to be scared off because there is a *chance* that it may be cold and possibly snowing. But there is an equal chance it will be in the 50-60ºF.

What is normally a 2 1/2 hour drive for me turned into a 6 hour drive. I came back home the next day and spent DCC money on a new generator as the electric was out for 8 days. Fun times for sure.

But for the most part you can expect the weather to be cool this time of year. A snow flurry or two is possible but not a given. If you are planning a trip to DCC then by all means don't let the weather spoil it for you. I promise you will have a great time.

Thank you for sharing. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s in January is not the norm.

I am just sharing my experience traveling in that region in my lifetime. It is FREEZING in January the times I have been through Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia area. I have never been able to wear short sleeves or shorts in January. Never.

I did not notice you were from Sweden.

Uh, I think you can handle the temperatures here in January. ;)

I have been driving down there from Chicago for at least the past 5 years. Some years, the snow makes travel hazardous, but I just slow down a bit and eventually get there. Once I arrive, I never go outside until it is time to leave.

I wouldn't let the weather determine whether or not you go to Derby. Once there, you won't even notice it.

Coming from North Dakota, that sounds like a nice break from the cold. I might have to make the trip if I can find the time.

Two years ago was a freak anomaly. In general, I expect the weather then to be in high thirties too low forties. I'd expect no problems flying into Louisville or Cincinnati. The weather inside the facility ranges from 69 to 73, zero precipitation.

I've lived in Indiana for over fifty years so I think I'm qualified to accurately discuss the weather. DCC is a great tournament and excellent venue.

It will be cold.

The weather in Louisville, KY is usually "mild" compared to upper midwestern states. And the other thing to keep in mind, the casino is on a state highway, and will be plowed of any snow during any snow shower.

You can fly into Indianapolis and drive (2 hours) or Louisville.

I went last year, and would say it was an enjoyable experience.

It was my first "professional" event and was pleased with the event.

I can confirm that it can be bad. It can be great. It's weather. It changes.
