how do you guys feel about hustles and hustlers?

it seems as if we have a double standard, we read stories about the old timers who performed all manners of hustles and we chuckle and admire accordingly, i.e. they guys who faked their speed, ran partner scams, etc......a recent blurb I read bout Don Feeney throwing a weighted peanut for distance

yet on the other hand we condemn those sort of actions today, and I myself have been to plenty of parts where such actions could get you into serious trouble with absolute nobody running to your defence

what gives?

I believe----if someone is wealthy and can afford to lose money, then
you can hustle him and no one should feel bad. He can afford to
lose and it's entertaining for him.

If someone is broke, has kids, no job and on welfare, I would never take
money from this person. I would rather give money instead.

I don't agree with taking money from people who can't afford to lose.
This is one of the reasons I don't play for money anymore.

I find true hustler's fascinating. They add color and interest into the pool world. I prefer the pool playing type.

They serve a purpose. They keep you on your toes and act as a gambling catalyst to the pool room. They also serve as a grim reminder that a fool and his money truly do go separate ways.

And as a nation we find serial killers fascinating... Any hour of the day you will find some true crime drama going thru the gory details of someone's nightmare.

Most of the hustlers I have ever known more or less hustled themselves out of having anything in later life unless they moved on to hustling something besides pool. Usually a woman who had a career and a house and was an easy con.

There is truth in the old joke... "What do you call a pool player wihout a girl friend?"

Regardless if a person has done well for themselves, or those that have not, to each his own. Betting is legal, and you see or hear from those that don't have a pot to wiz in, and they're at the casinos all the time. There are tables for all levels of risk, including pool gambling.

If you get hustled and know it, it becomes a learning experience. If you didn't know you were hustled, then too bad for you.

Hustling is alive and well. The difference is whether you are the windshield or the bug. Nobody calls themselves a hustler because they negotiate a spot they think they will win at but who the hell negotiates a spot they think they can't win at? By the standards applied on this forum every pool gambler is a hustler.

A few may kid themselves and others that they try to make a dead even game but the truth is obvious reading this forum. Pretty much every time someone has to play hard they say they outran the nuts. No, if you make an honest game you are supposed to have to play your best to win.

Some outright con's are a bit different but very few con's can snare an innocent victim. Almost every con relies on the victim's greed. Hustlers are always the easiest victims to hustle, not the hardest. They are always on the lookout for easy cash and dangling it in front of them draws them like flies. People lined up a hundred deep to try to play Viffer awhile back. Were any of them really planning on risking big money giving him what they thought was a fair game? Maybe one in twenty and that is being generous.

Now the hustle is in negotiating the spot. I'm sure many still hide their speed too. We just don't call it hustling when we are the ones doing it.

They thought they were stealing, not gambling. And no I don't hustle, never did, and don't gamble anymore. I don't get a thrill out of it and don't need the money.

I will add that, though every pool hustler I ever met was rather pathetic in their own right, I did enjoy watching their antics over the years. I even enjoyed "donating" to them every now and then. Even managed to pick up a thing or two about actually playing the game every now and again.

Sadly, three of those scufflers from those days that I knew first hand are now dead. None of them even reached sixty years of age. Many more just disappeared. Some more are skulking around like hollow eyed ghosts. Kind of creepy, but mostly just sad.

I do kinda miss the pool room from almost twenty years ago now. But would I really go back? Nah...

You cannot "fake your speed". You can play however you want to play and you don't owe anybody anything. There's no law saying you have to play "top speed" against every person you play for the rest of your life. You most certainly don't owe an explanation about the "speed" you really play. If a guy is willing to play an "unknown" for money then that's his problem.

Don't forget that the guy you're playing is trying to take your money. He's doing all he can to take it and you're obligated to do everything you can to take his. That's why they call it gambling.

Anyone who doesn't understand these things should leave their money in their wallet and probably shouldn't enter a poolroom. It ain't no church.

I rarely won against players I didn't know. Go figure. There are a couple of games that players can't hide their speed at (if you know anything) and it pays to play those games.
