Break Cue Taper

I've owned a number of break cues now including the following:

Predator BK2
Predator BK3
J&J with phenolic tip
Varney j/b
Gulyassey original sledgehammer
Mace (circa 1990s)
Various other random custom break cues

My biggest issue I think is taper. Whenever I break with the BK3, which is my favorite break cue to date I feel as though the taper is just a little too chunky when it slips through my hands which makes me choke up and possibly hit the ball off center.

I feel like the tip is slipping off the ball when I break a little but when I get a solid hit I transmit a lot of power. I feel like the cue ball also tends to not "squat" in exactly the way I would like to see even when I hit the balls very square.

Are there any break cues on the market that are stiff but don't use a ridiculously chunky taper?

I'm sure a good portion of this is the indian and not the arrow but I believe a better arrow can compensate to a degree for shortcomings.

No doubt the break is one of the weakest parts of my game and I'm looking to improve it.
 
The Samsara JB03 and JB04 have a comfortable taper. Not super stout. Martin

That depends on how you break and the diameter of your shaft. Personally I would never use my OB pro shaft to break because I would think it would eventually cause issues. I also tend to bend the shaft into the table when I break and I imagine over time that would also cause issues.

Different tapers effect cue strength. That's why many of the break cues have tapers like they do.
 
I have an older Stinger jump/break cue with a rock hard leather tip.......wow, it just works amazingly great.

Isn't the Pro shaft solid maple? if it's less than 12mm then maybe breaking wouldn't be ideal. you can always use and old mcdermott or something with a hard tip and more durable ferrule installed. If your bending your cue, it's not the cue's fault if you damage it. It makes me cringe when i see someone rainbow a cue.

Just use a regular shaft and then have a break tip put on it.

G-10, phenolic, Samsara, JSB....take your pick.:thumbup:

My Pechauer break cue with stock hard leather tip has a comfortable taper, no issues breaking/playing with it. Very similar to the Pro Series cue I have of theirs except the shaft on the break cue has tigher/more rings.
 
I have a Denali break cue with a purpleheart shaft. 13mm and euro taper.

No, the best execution beats the bets tools 98% of the time.

The break is more about putting the CB within 0.0006" of where you want it than the difference between 17MPH and 25MPH. Accuracy beats power.
