Should we change the rule of One Pocket ?

I have been left with this thinking for a while.
Imo, one pocket is an amazing game, I love playing this game. But sometimes things got sleepy and the game involved many safeties, passive plays, intentional fouls, etc. A game could last for hours. I think thats a flaw of the game.
A few small change in the rule can fix it.
I suggest :
- 3rd foul in one game ( doesn't need to be consecutive ) = minus 3 points + ball in hand for the opponent. This rule will reduce the intentional fouls bullshit, reward a good safety and speed up the game.
- just play two pocket : the corner and the side :). Well this a whole new game :).

What do you think ? What do you suggest ?

How about both a shot clock and a game clock? The guy who is ahead after x minutes wins the game. That would introduce some new tactics!

a 3 ball spot for 3-foul?..thats huge and ball in hand on top of that?..thats dangerous.... the original corner pockets plus a side pocket (new game) would be tough while trying to keep opponent from making it in the.(1) pocket he has can be difficult enough..adding a side pocket to it would almost force intentional fouls..then you have to keep them from making a ball in side and corner....i believe the one pocket game is roughly 70-80yrs old (not sure) but changing it would be very difficult...maybe with a local opponent but i think the game will stay the same,.,its intended to be a strategy game no matter how long it takes.,.9/10 ball may be better if not willing to take part in one pocket as its not a break and run game

I suggest leaving it the "ef" alone. Patience and an attention span greater than that of a 4 year old are key traits to play the game. Players without those traits should probably stick to 9 ball or 10 ball.

Why do you want to change the game, is it because you can not win a long game. I find that the hardest thing for most players is getting through their head that they don't have to make a ball everytime its their shot. Leave the game alone.--Smitty

If opponent knocks an object ball into your pocket, you should get the ball. Under the rules, you don't get the ball if they also scratch. This very silly rule can add an hour or more to a rack and, at least to me, it makes no sense at all.

Absolutely!

Exactly!

Leave one pocket alone. It's the purest and most skillful game we have left,,,,,,,,probably because it hasn't been Tweeked by people that don't understand it or don't have the patience to play the table correctly.

If you want to speed it up,,,,,,,,,just fire at your hole every inning,,,,,,,that'll speed it up!

Sure will

I agree completely. There has never been a game with such beauty and skill to tax every move on its own and deliver a judgement of every shot and offer at least one other thing you could have done better.

I love this game and it drives me nuts all at the same time. Just go out and find someone new to play and you will find another game you've never seen before.

Making a game different -- Isn't making it better !

How about leaving the game just the way it is, as they already ruined 9-ball thinking they would change the rules for the better.
Always saying the rules in 9-ball must be changed for TV purposes. (to make it faster, just as your wanting to do with One-pocket). They made 9-Ball faster,
shortened the races, nothing spotted except the 9, stopped showing the entire match, basically made it less interesting you could say (they gutted the good
from the game). Then when their ill thought plan didn't work, they said the game is boring and unwatchable.

HOW DID THAT WORK OUT ???
I'll tell you how that worked out, now there's no Pool on TV at all, people claim it's nothing more than a break contest and it's boring to watch. Leave One-Pocket
alone, you don't need to make it better, it's great already just as 9-Ball was before all the "let's change it people" got hold of it. More One-Pocket is being played
now than ever before in the history of the game. So let's change it, smart ! Leave it alone as Grady is no longer here to bring the game back from the dead, as
he did before. Let Grady rest he earned it.

The "Lets Change The Rules" guys should all get together and brain storm to figure out a brand new game, that is better than all the present games. That shouldn't
be so hard since they all seem to know how to improve the games that have stood the test of time, now should it ? Call your new game whatever you want, it's your
right as you invented it, just don't call it One-Pocket, as that would just be history repeating it's self, as a similar crime has already been perpetrated on the late great
game of 9-Ball. Remember when your new game flops, to take credit for it, as Pool is boring (as an excuse) will fall on deaf ears at least for this fan of the Pool.
HANDS OFF !!!

P.S. Hey, maybe you guys could practice making things better by changing the
wording on this post, that should keep you guys busy, and One-Pocket safe for a little while.
While you're at it in Chess, don't you think that black should be able to move twice on their first turn as white
got to move first, "it's only fair", RIGHT ? (Sound familiar)

Actually, the rules evolve over time, and tradition doesn't get in the way, even in one pocket. For example, the rules pertaining to object ball off the table in one pocket are not what they always were. The definition of a double hit has also changed since the inception of one pocket.

Even the purist must accept that every game played over the glorious green felt has had and will have its rules tweaked over time, but as you note, the fundamental structure of the games must remain unaltered.

Actually, rules in a lot of sports/games change all the time. The 3-point-line in basketball, for example.

Since you brought up chess, none other than Bobby Fischer proposed changing the rules so the pieces in the back rank are randomized. The problem as he saw it was that players were memorizing opening lines, and the real "chess playing" didn't start until like 15 moves into a game. Randomizing the start would force the players to start using thinking and being creative earlier on.

As I said they did a fine job with 9-Ball, maybe you think it changed for the better
but all those rule changes for TV and it's not even on TV any more.
I'll leave it at that.

The post about chess got me thinking. Chess has a 50-move rule: if 50 moves pass with neither player taking a piece or moving a pawn, the game is a draw.

Something like this might work in 1-pocket, to cut off those games where all the balls are clumped together uptable and the players just play safe back-and-forth. If, say, 20 innings go by and neither player has made a ball, then do something.

Do what? Maybe restart the game. Maybe rack the remaining balls and start playing from there. Maybe something else. Either way, it will probably give one player incentive to avoid the 20-innings and play more aggressively.

So, you lost the rent money a guy who knew how to take intentional fouls did you?

One Pocket is a game for Gambling - if you want fast and furious, play Texas Express.

i agree. the way i learned to play the game in my home pool room was as you stated.

The one rule I would consider adding would be -- once a certain number or balls are up table, the ball closest to the rail (at head of table) gets spotted. This would speed up those up table games and maybe even add MORE strategy.

It's so sad to have the thought that when somebody suggested something = he lost money and wanna change the rule so he could win.

What did this forum become ?

Where are the positive and constructive thinking ?

Actually I enjoy playing 2 hour game. But as I said, sometimes things became sleepy. And what I said was SUGGESTIONS.

I don't want to say this but I will. Bunch of losers go get a life. Because you are thinking like a loser that doesn't mean others do, too.

Stu:

So, should those who pocket a ball and scratch in 14.1 "get to keep the ball" as well? What you're suggesting above is just as silly.

In "targeted pocket" games like 14.1 and one pocket, if you pocket a ball and scratch, the ball you pocketed comes up and gets spotted (because it was fouled on), and *then* you pay the penalty. In 14.1, you deduct a point off your total; in one pocket, you deduct a ball from your pocket and spot it up.

The idea that if you pocket a ball in your opponent's pocket and scratch, but the opponent gets to keep the ball, breaks the spirit of the "ball immediately comes up because you fouled in pocketing it, and *then* you pay a penalty" foundational rule used in not just one pocket, but other "targeted pocket" games as well.

And, this isn't what keeps one pocket games going for hours. It's people that won't shoot at their hole, or, who like to play a "wedge game" (i.e. pushing and jamming all the balls up to one corner at the head end of the table) to tire their opponent.

Rather, if we really want to break the wedge game practice, I like some of the suggestions so far, e.g. as soon as all remaining balls are in the kitchen, one gets spotted on the foot spot. If your opponent bats it away, it immediately gets foot-spotted again. Someone will definitely shoot a spot shot to their hole, or an up-and-back bank.

Freddy the Beard came up with "Speedo One Pocket" a while back:

http://onepocket.org/SpeedoRulesOnePocket.htm

This is a much better way to speed up the game, rather than breaking the spirit of rules that are commonly-accepted to be foundational rules in other disciplines.
