How SVB jump with his playing cue

Hi all,
Could you explain me how SVB could make jump shot with his playing cue? What is the tip on the shaft?

Thanks for reading.

Incredible technique and an unhealthy amount of time practicing it.

I doubt what tip he has on his cue makes a difference to him.

As far as I know, SVB plays with a Kamui Brown tip (I think hard?), but like Pidge says, it's pretty much all to do with Shane's technique and willingness to practice, as opposed to his equipment.

Jumping with the playing cue was what we did in those years (before the flood) before jump cues (and LD shafts) became the norm. So although it certainly required practice and technique, it was something that even some C+ players could do. Note, however, that we were using solid maple shafts (which I believe Shane uses). Don't even bother to try this with today's laminated shafts. Splinters will be the most likely reward for your trouble.

I found it.I think he jumped a couple during this match but this one is sick over a full ball with a meucci.

At about the 0:55 second mark.

I'm not taking anything away from that, but it does make it easier to make a full cue jump when you can bridge on the rail. I could have the worlds longest fingers and bridge on the rail and still not be able to jump with my playing cue :-(

When I played with solid maple shafts, I could do it too.
Now that I have a low deflection shaft, it's nearly impossible.

Someone that grew up with everyone using a jump cue LOL, it's like kids now wondering how anyone found things out before the internet. Books? Never heard of them, are they on Facebook?

Back in the day, quite a few players knew how to jump with their playing cue, nothing to do with the tip really although a harder one helps. Jumping with the LD shafts and soft layered tips though is very hard.

I played with a maple shaft for like 15 years and could never do that. I guess that's why I am sitting here behind my laptop instead of the Japan Open :).

I used to do it with a Schmelke that I owned. It had a 12" pro tapered shaft with a 12.25mm diameter Elkmaster tip. Granted, the tip eventually hardened up, but not so much that it would surpass a phenolic tip.

It was nice being able to jump, but I couldn't stand the hard hit.

I forget which SVB vs. Somebody match it was, but the Kamui rep was in the commentary booth as a guest. The commentator asked him what tip Shane used, and he said: "Shane uses a Kamui Hard, which we designed as a break tip, as his playing tip. Not something I'd recommend for your average player."

BTW, regarding laminated shafts, I've jumped many times with my OB Break Cue (Samarsa tip) with no problems.

You also have to take into consideration that back then, most tournaments and pool rooms used thick, fluffy cloth that often had a rubber backing under it.

On the tables at the pool room here that still have cloth like this,if I have 6" or more between the cue ball and a full object ball,I'M NOT HOOKED,esp if I'm close to the rail.

Now that thinner, slicker Simonis/Championship type cloth is used most often,it almost makes jumping a ball that close impossible unless you're Earl,Shannon Daulton, etc. Tommy D.

This.

BINGO!

Earl has you covered...

I've tried jumping with my playing cue a couple times and I can't do it well. Definitely some skill and technique required (and no, I don't use LD shafts). It's shocking how much easier it is to jump with an actual jump cue, my Gilbert jump/break makes it easier and it's downright effortless with my Jacoby jump cue.
