If you intend to start using side spin, the amount of squirt (or "cue ball deflection") that the stick causes is far, far more important to your learning and how you play the game than the specific diameter of the tip. What size tip would you recommend for a C or D player? Will it really make a difference when learning stun and draw shots?
I'll say again, doesn't make a difference. We are talking about a C or D player. Deflection doesn't even come into the picture because he has to learn what his new cue is going to do anyways. As far as the smaller being too loose in the bridge, that's just part of learning how to make a proper bridge, Whichever you get used to is what you will later tend to prefer.
The contact area on the cb is the same whichever size tip you use. Shaft diameter is only a personal preference.
Winner winner chicken dinner!!!
Mr. Brown,
No offense intended, but..
A very soft 14mm tip with no radius, flat, vs a very hard 11mm tip with a radius less than a dime = the exact same size contact 'patch' for the same force of stroke?
I have some physics education & am capable of rational thinking. I am not locked into a 'religious' faction.
Many are locked into what they have been told & don't seem to be able to utilize common sense.
As I said earlier, to think that a difference makes no difference is irrational.
That does not even take into account that even if the contact patch was a consistent 3mm, a larger tip with a larger radius could go off the center line with less, shall we say, 'negative effects' than a smaller tip with a shorter radius.
With all due respects,
Rick
I think Neil was replying to me since I brought up the issue of a thinner shaft needs a tighter bridge.
No problem that people have different opinions. A 13mm shaft vs a 11.75mm shaft. IMHO, the 13mm is better for a beginner and they will pocket balls more consistently with the 13 than the 11.75. It's true for me and others at my pool hall. Most noticeable with longer shots played on 9 ft tight pocket tables.

I did not say anything about the size being too loose in the bridge or anything related to the bridge.
You can say it does not make a difference until you die on your death bed but that does not make what you say true.
To think that a difference makes no difference is IRRATIONAL.
To believe such makes it a religion.
May God Bless You, Neil
Geezey pete, Rick. I never said YOU said anything about the bridge being sloppy, but someone else did. Which I addressed. Go ahead and call me irrational or whatever other names you want to come up with. Maybe if you weren't so nitpicky, you could see the forest for the trees and understand some of this stuff.
I am not going to reply as I want, as it would do little but derail the OP's thread further.
May God Bless You, Neil.
i enjoy following the back and forth you an Neil always seem to have going on...i find it entertaining
Well... I don't & I don't think Mr. Wilson does either.
What's your opinion about tip size for a newbie or a novice?
he shouldn't be worried about that at this point in time
I doubt that Neil is.
But why do you want to encourage he & I to get into it?
I wish a truce could be called, but I know that it would not last.
We just don't see eye to eye on the topics nor on how to discuss the topics.
What about your opinion on tip size for C or D level player?
he shouldn't be worried about that at this point in time
A-player..............13.00mm-14.00mm
B-player..............12.75mm-13.25mm
C-player..............11.75mm-12.75mm
D-player..............11.75mm
