I `m in a situation where I starting up changing tips, cleaning shafts, changing ferrules and other small stuff. I have some question about what to charge for tip change, cleaning and sealing a shaft etc.
What do you guys charge for stuff like that?
I`m also wondering how many brand of tips it`s common to stock (reasonable for the customer to expect...)

The tips I plan to stock is:
Kamui clear black/brown SS, S, M
G2 S, M
Navigator S, M
Zan Premium S
Zan S, M
Triangle
LePro
Samsara break tip
Mezz Sonic tip
I will also stock the Taom tips, when they become available.

Does that seem like a broad enough selection?
I have had no requests for tips harder than Medium, so I wan`t stock any before I get a request.

Check a few internet sites that advertise repairs and look at their prices then adjust for your customers and geographical area..................

I look at my shop rate, how long it takes me to replace a tip, and the cost of the tip. I guarantee all my tip installs for life, so I add 50% of the cost of the tip. YMMV
I fail to understand why you wouldn't stock all of Tom's UltraSkin tips - all my customers love them - even those who thought they HAD to have a Kamui or a Moori.

My 2 cents,
Gary

Mostly because Norwegians have not heard about Ultraskin tips. They rather pay for the brands they have heard about.

someone has to break the mold :) You have got to start telling them about UltraSkin tips. So far it looks like the closest place they can try how these tips play is Moscow
Once your customers see they can get a good product at lower price most of them are likely to convert to UltraSkin tips. They are offered in 6 varieties!

You are right but is up to you to introduce a good thing for all concern :) They'll love you for it!

Stock some non-Clear Kamui's too. Do not stock any Zan or G2 until you can verify people use then around you. Same for Navigators. Add to the list a box of Elkmasters and Triangles. Stay away from Moori tips unless you are absolutely sure they aren't fakes. Get some black canvas phenolic for your break ferrules/tips.

As for pricing, average lathe rates seem to be around $50/hour for experienced people. So time yourself on a few installs and see how long it takes you. But as a standard, most prices per install are between $10-15, then add the cost of the tip. Round up to the nearest $5. No idea how that relates to your currency.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have started ordering the basic stuff I need to set up a small repair shop and I have figured out reasonable prices for my services.
I`m wondering if you guys have a markup on tips or do you buy/sell them at market price?

This is what I`m stocking to start with:

Zan Premium Soft
Zan S/M
Moori S/M
G2 S/M
Tiger Emerald
Kamui black Clear SS/S/M
Kamui original clear SS/S/M
Le Pro
Triangle
Elk Master

I`m stocking these Jump/break tips:

Taom
Samsara
Mezz Sonic tip

Ferrules I`m offering:
Juma
Elforyn
Aegis II
G 10

Shaft cleaning/polish products from Unique.
Right now I`m using Loctite ultra gel glue, that seems to be working fine for regular tips, but I have had one Samsara tip come off (he played with it for a month or so first.)
I`m wondering if I should use another type of glue for J/B tips or if there is any other tricks you guys know?

You can always tell a norwegian, but you cant tell them much.

Not sure what to make of that. But I have to start somewhere and if it's a viable business I can start selling other products.

I have Ultraskin Tips in Haugesund, Norway. That is slightly closer to Oslo, Norway than Moscow, Russia :-)

I guess I have about 15; a couple S and some more M and H. Just send me a pm if you are interested.

I sell pretty much every well known tip there is in my webshop and can track back what I have
sold since 2008. Quite a few of the tipsyou plan to stock are not even in the top 30.

Kamui Black S
Kamui Black M
Elkmaster
G2 M
Ultraskin M
Kamui Black SS
Triangle
Wizard M
Kamui Black H
Lepro

Are the top 10 selling playing tips I have sold (I left out a few that are no longer available like Super Pro and Oinkers).
Consider that Utraskin has only been onthe market for around 2 years but allready well in the top 10.

Jump/Break

Samsara
White Diamond
Mezz Sonic
G10

Don't forget to stock up on black canvas phenolic rod for ferrules and tips, and sometimes shaft thread inserts.

Your list looks alot like mine to me. The two brands thats not on your list is Moori and Zan.
Anyways this is just something to get me started. I guess I will find out pretty quick, which brands sell and wich don't.
(btw I`ll be ordering some Mezz break tips from you later this week :) )

Guys thanks for pointing out that Kamui clears needs a thin glue like Loctite 401 and not a gel type glue.
That`s what is great about this forum :)

I'd also recommend you buy some break&jump "Select" tips by MadMan. They have too many advantages ;)
