Guys tearing their shirt of, to show their flabby body is just beyond embarrassing.

Embarrassing for who? Obviously Scooter is not embarrassed. It did make me cringe a little, though. Anyway, welcome to the internet, it seems you're new here. You think that was bad, take a look at a few of the gems contained HERE....

...white thrash men from the southern areas of USA.

I resemble that remark

So is your attitude. Please check your smug attitude, at the door next visit.
If you hadn't started this conversation off in the manner you did, it wouldn't
be going in the direction it has.

Have a great day, I don't have anymore time
to waste on you.

How am I being smug? I'm stating my opinon about reality tv and that this roadplayer concept stereotypes pool and a certain section of Americans and that the word often used about that group is "white thrash"
I didn't create all the reality shows on tv and I certainly did not single out a group of Americans as these tv shows tend to do.
I would like to see pool prosper and my humble opinion is that American roadplayer is the wrong way to go, especially if the goal is to attract a new audience to pool.

I didn't knock anything or anyone.
You are the one digressing in the first place.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt in that there may be a language interpretation discrepancy on this thread.

It is not a good thing to call white men trash from the South or words to that effect. It would be like me, hypothetically speaking, saying the blind man walked by the fish market and said, "How are you doing, Norwegians?" or if I was to, again, hypothetically speaking, say those fish-breathed Norwegians don't do anything for global peace other than stuff their beaks with stinky fish while America does all the heavy-lifting to stop genocide and provide assistance to African countries to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDs, et cetera, et cetera.

I happen to like watching shows that depict the South. I don't consider it degrading one bit. I love Beautiful Dixie. Maybe you need to understand the culture in the South better, and you may come away with a deeper appreciation for some of the niceties that do exist there ---> HERE. :)

I suspect we are talking past each other JAM. I have nothing against Americans, being from the north, south or any other area.
I'm reacting to the stereotyping of a certain segment of Americans so many reality shows seems to be indulging in.
I would love to visit the south and I would probably love it.

I've kind of changed my mind on the subject. I still think realitive shows in general are stupid and bad. I don't think this one will be much better, frankly, but it can't be much worse either. Honey Boo Boo lowered the bar so much, that unless a show is about nudist, illiterate, wife swapping sewage pipe dwellers it can't ever be surpassed in the trashy and stupid department.

Of course I would not like it if people started tearing their shirts off at the pool hall or acting "loud" and obnoxios or assume that I am like that because I play pool. But that will never happen anyway. As reality shows go this will hardly make a blip on the radar, and even if it did take off it would probably be so far off from reality that nobody would actually believe it was real anyway. The most popular reality shows are about people in life- and death situations or in extremely rural settings. At least it was when I last watched any of them. Many of them, if not most, are fake and scripted.I don't see how this show can compete with that unless there were lots of scripted confrontations, robberies etc. People seem to want obnoxios, ignorant and violent trash on their TV screens. That is at least my impression. Makes me glad I no longer have a TV, and the minimal exposure I have through youtube etc only makes it clearer to me.

The one area where this show could have been able to do better than the others would be if it had intelligent and witty banter, not just boasting etc. Doesn't look like it will be the case from what I've seen so far.

Pools image in the US is permanently ruined, and it will never rise from the ashes again. I applaud Mark Wilsons efforts, but he is fighting an uphill battle, and one that probably can't be won. Every time someone has tried to resurrect pool in the past, he has been a crook or a con artist out for a quick score or someone trying to profit off the crap image it now enjoys. So far MW is in exclusive company in being someone who actually recognizes pools image to be the problem and not the solution to it's current lack of appeal. The intense resistance he faces only shows how true this observation is. You've all made your beds and now you must lie in it. Too bad because I love pool, but it is what it is.

I totally agree!
I think pool could be given a very different look if we employed some innovative thinking.
Seeing that Magnus Carlsen, a young Norwegian chess player have been the main focus in the news here the last month. It's all about making the audience understanding pool, how difficult it is to reach a world class skill level and the amount of dedication that goes into the sport, both physically and mentally if you wan't to reach the top.

This is an issue I'm struggling with. On one hand, I would love to see pool gain larger audiences, attract sponsors and have more people playing and competing. And any publicity is good publicity, as they say. If this project takes off, it will surely get more people interested in pool. That's the positive side.

On the other hand, I feel that this is not the way to go. Focusing on the hustling acpect does very few favours for pool as a legitimate competitive sport. I cannot speak for Scooter as a person given that I've never met the guy. But would I like to see him - as he is portrayed here - as the new public image of pool? Simply, no. But that's just me.

If it's excitement we're after, I would just rather focus on the game itself and the skill of the players to provide the entertainment. I mean, just take a look at the latest snooker tournament (UK Championship), and more specifically the final. Two highly talented players, huge drama, high stakes, excellent entertainment. And people watching.

I would really rather see pool pursuing this avenue than that provided by hustling reality shows. But again, that's just me.

So, you can sAy anything you want, no matter how insulting, but then when someone does the same, suddenly you want a civil discussion ???

Maybe you should find the "way back machine" and start you discussion in a civil manner....geez, you really are not this dense, are you ?

The funny thing is that euro countries eventually buy all of the American TV shows to air in their countries, the good ones and the bad ones, heck, they even air Hogans heros in Germany. Heck, Baywatch was a hit throughout Europe ;)

Funny you don't want to see Pool portrayed that way, but the only reason there is so
much money involved in Snooker is because of the legal gambling on the sport.
Not to mention it's seems most of the advertisers are gambling company's.
Basically what you don't like, (gambling) is exactly what keeps Snooker alive and well.

And let's all remember and celebrate one of the greatest snooker players of them all. He smoked, drank, gambled, and is still held in the highest regard.

Well yes in theory I should be able to say anything I want. Remember Voiltares brilliant comment about free speech: " I do not agree with what you have to say, but I`ll defend to the death your right to say it"
That being said, there are rules for discussion and when someone attacks your person instead of your ideas, that is generally thought of as a bad ting.

So I don`t really care if you call me dense, even though it can be taken as an ad hominem attack.
You seem to not see what I was commenting on, because you have put your blinders on, in regards to a few words i wrote, wich you deem anti American or atleast anti the southern part of USA.

If you care to read what I wrote, you will see I was not being racist, biggoted or narrow minded. I was commenting on how reality tv is misrepresenting/stereotyping a certain demographic of Americans.
The tv channels who make the shows i mentioned are the ones at fault, they are the ones selling this image, while laughing at the people involved in these shows.
They are spinning these folks as "white trash, hicks and Rednecks" seeing these shows is not that far from seeing the movie Deliverance.
Take a concrete example like "Dog the bounty hunter" aka Duane Chapman.
Do you really think most people watching that show think "Dog" is a cool guy? or do you think they look at him like a human freakshow/trainwreck?
The audience is not laughing with "Dog" they are laughing at him!

Yes all these shows are aired here in Europe too. We are pretty much bombarded by shitty tv, much of it originates in USA.
I don`t even own a tv anymore as there is next to nothng interesting to watch.

Blinders ?? Maybe you should go back and read my post more slowly...I said nothing about anti american or anything else. Yes, you can say anything you want, but what I was pointing out is that you can't be upset when folks say what they want to, right ?

Also, great job derailing this guys thread.....if you don't like american TV, nobody cares, and this is not the place or time to let us know....

Dog the Bounty Hunter is not from the southern US. He's based in Hawaii IIRC.

You sure are passionate about what is on TV for someone who doesn't even own a TV...
