Interesting story on CBS's Sunday Morning about video gaming as a spectator sport. 27 million watching the world championship, I think they mentioned filling stadiums around the world; the Staples Center was sold out.

A few more viewers than a free, let alone a pay for view, pool stream gets. I know there are a lot more gamers than pool players in the world, but it seems a higher percentage (feel free to do the math) of them want to watch the best in the world play their game.

Maxx...Actually it was 37 million watching, and that was just here in the USA. That was up from just 2 million viewers in 2010! :eek: One of the winners got $100K prize...take that mom and dad! LOL :grin: They talked about there being almost 100 million gamers worldwide, with more joining every year...mostly men 16-24. The best free pool stream might get 2000 viewers...not even a fraction of a comparison.

Its sad...,

One of my boys called me yesterday, we've friends for 20yrs and he's going crazy about how cool this video racing game is and how I've got to try it. I really couldn't believe how excited he was about the game. He kept telling me about how real it seemed, the cars and how you could detail them, the tracks, on and on and on!!

This guy aint no kid and he knows that I don't care about video games, but he's really into it and it.

I got him to watch the Mosconi Cup and he liked it, but he wasn't all charged up about it. He didn't tell me that he felt the need to go out and play, well he didn't say it like he meant it and he hasn't gone out and played yet.

Its not just kids, it seems to be everybody.

Most households have a computer now and league of legends is free to play.

If everyone had a pool cue and all tables were free then pool might have millions watching too.

Million dollar prize pool doesn't hurt either.

True, very few places around here for someone under 21 to play pool, strictly bar tables.

Bars are good for the leagues, but need the kid friendly tables that were in all the bowling alleys.
 
don't know what League of Legends is, but I know you'll never make any money playing Stocker.....:cool:

League is very popular in my generation, and for good reason! It's one hell of game, and it's a pure skill game. Like pool, you gotta develop game knowledge and mechanics to be good :)

Some of the top streamers on twitch.tv are making 100k+ a year from just sitting in their room and streaming 40+ hours a week. They get up to 50k viewers sometimes! Some are actually on a top pro team, others are just very very good streamers.

Just about all the top money makers on YouTube with millions of watches per video and huge follower numbers are gaming based. And many of them are bad, I guess you have to be under 18 to enjoy them. One guy just plays and has a video of him talking to the game basically. And gets over a million $ in ad revenue a year. I don't get it.

He said its called Real Racing 3 and you can down load it at Google Play. He said he has his phone connected to his computer and them streamed to his home theater

This is exactly why, more players more advertising bigger tournament payouts.

I thought so based on your original description. The cars do look totally real. It's like watching a real race in HD. I have it on my latest generation iPad. Played it a couple of times and may or may not ever play it again. Doesn't suck but definitely doesn't excite me. I'd rather play pool or some other computer or iPad game.

A nice looking girl (doesn't even need to be a great player) streaming LOL on Twitch right from her apartment any night of the week has viewers that dwarf any pool tournament finals stream that I've ever seen. It's not even close. Some have 1/4 million followers, and make a VERY nice living.....
That's why both Google and Amazon offered a huge amount of money for Twitch....enormous viewership.
Not that I've ever watched a hot girl stream LOL :wink:
 
Just noticed during last night's football game that one of the biggest advertisers was a video game: Game of War.

That's some expensive ad time. And I'm sure Kate Upton (featured in the ad) didn't do the ad for cheap.
