I tore my rotator cuff breaking like an 18 year old in 10 ball at 73 five weeks ago. Pain was so bad the first few weeks that my wife had to cut my meat and comb my hair. I can't believe I was so stupid as to break so hard at my age to cause this kind of injury. Ortho Doctor said having bad arthritis in all my joints and a lot of the ball and socket is worn away helped cause the tear.

Anyway, looks like a few more weeks W/O playing pool and then no breaking. I guess only 14.1 for me for the rest of my life. Not a bad thing I guess...I love that game. Anyone else tear a rotator cuff breaking? Johnnyt cup

OUCH!
You need plenty of physio and lots of rest, if not you could do more damage.
Never be said that pool isn't a physical game. A lot of athleticism is required.
Hope you get on the mend asap.

Its rotator cuff. I'm dealing with that now johnny. Lifting a couch here. Its been 8 months. Doctor said if it wasnt for one slight range of motion that I can accomplish, she'd say it was completely torn and needed surgery for sure. They are recommending it regardless.

In researching this, it seems it doesn't go away on its own for a very long time if ever. Be very careful not to re injure it. I did. When you think you feel a little better, you're really not.

Yes Cuff, not cup. Thank you, and I was a nurse on the Ortho floor for 4 years too. LOL. I must be still stuck on th MC. I think this is a re injury to it. I never went to the DR the last time because it didn't hurt this bad. Yeah, the doc started with that new shoulder crap before the X-ray was dry. He was pissed at me anyhow because I wouldn't take the MRI. I told him an x-ray would be fine. I have good insurance too. I told him if he would give me 50% off two knees. two hips, lower back discs, and throw in the shoulder for free I'd think about it. Add to that a little heart surgery and I'll be just as good as biotic Geno. I don't think doctors like to give weight/$$. Johnnyt

I blew out my achille's tendon pushing a car at 72 in July. With the leg in a cast trying to heal non surgically. the lack of mobility caused a blood clot. I had a massive pulmonary embolism in my left lung, pneumonia in my right lung. Also went into A Fib. Spent 5 days in the hospital, 4 of it in the critical care unit.

Just now getting back to playing, if that's what you want to call it. Game really suffered during the down time. Oh well, still opening my eyes in the AM, that's the up side.

Ya gotta love dem "Golden Years"!

The rotator cuff ... ( I didn't know ) is actually a group of overlapping shoulder muscles. You can see the surgery on youtube, and how they reattach them to the bone.

Was diagnosed with bone cancer 5 YRS ago, first spot was my right arm where my rotator cuff attaches! The tumor was the size of a cue ball! They were able to go in and remove the tumor and reattach the rotator cuff! They filled the hole with cement and bone graph! I was able to return to work in 4 months(auto technician)!

I have a picture of the xray on my box at work. Everytime things go crappy for me, I look at the picture and thank god everyday I'm here and realize it's not as bad as it could be;)

Stay positive, and relax!!! 14.1 is the greatest game ever! So I don't feel "too" bad for ya;)

Happy holidays to you and yours!!!

Thanks for the tip to play 1 hole, but I believe it's a young mans game now. Seems like they are running 8 and out against the the golden years guys...except for efern;). Johnnyt

I had a right shoulder cuff tear problem. At 72 I thought I was done with pool but I'm now back after 5 or 6 months of rehab and stronger and better than I was.
I tried to learn how to play lefty but that didn't happen. My friends broke the rack for me until I got better and now it's like it never happened.
Everyone's different in their recovery prognosis as the injury is can be quitre different from person to person but you'll do much better with time. Good luck, Mitch

Mine was on my bridge arm from working out at the gym. I quit for over a year.

You can also play 1P. A great game

Sorry to hear about that Johnnyt. Just for references:
I have a slight rotator cuff tear on my non-breaking shoulder and have done therapy and now maintain the shoulder muscle strength with specific exercises. No aching shoulder, no surgery, holding that line as long as I can.

I don't know if I have a tear or just a strain but I did it playing golf this summer and like an idiot didn't stop playing golf even though it hurt. I figured it would get better after I stopped playing for the season.

Now, playing pool keeps it aggravated and like an idiot I haven't stopped playing pool.

I'm starting PT next week and after reading this thread, I'm going to stop shooting for a while (league is off for a month, anyway) to get it better.

I Am A Rotator Cuff Expert.......

Since 2009, I have had 3 rotator cuff surgeries ( left & right shoulders) and next year I'll have my 4th rotator cuff surgery.....3 will have been on my right shoulder and I am right handed.. The next one will unfortunately involve 2 full thickness tears to the Supraspinatus(1.6cm & 2.1cm), partial tears to the Infraspinatus, torn labrum, arthritic joint problems, and ugh..... a tenodesis.........this is the last resort......the big head tendon used for my right arm abduction will be surgically severed. I'll have a appreciable loss of strength in my right arm and some awful lumps where the tendon will roll back after being severed but that's just how it goes. The tendon keeps ripping off the humerus even after being attached with medical bolts, and in the 3rd surgery, steel sutures were used to reattach the tendon. Nope, didn't last & so it's become the last resort.....just sever the muscle.....eliminate it entirely.

I have become pretty much an expert on shoulder surgeries.......torn labrum, big & short head tendons, partial tears, full thickness tears, arthritis joint degeneration, clavicle resection, tendon reattachment. Gosh, you pretty much name it and it's been done....two (2) medial anchor bolts, steel woven sutures, etc. I even tried the cortisone therapy in between surgeries.......pretty much did everything and anything imaginable to try repair/heal both shoulders.

And yes, my pool game has suffered and will never completely recover.......2/3rds of every rotator cuff surgery performed on males over the age of 55 yrs. old fail within 2 years of the date of surgery. I realize you're not having surgery but do pay attention to the severity of your shoulder injury. I'm in my late 60's and it only gets worse as you get older........trust me on this one......I speak from firsthand, personal experience.
