Ok, guys, help me out here...

In my area, this seems to be a Brunswick thing. I don't really see it on other brands. Have any of you attended a Brunswick training that discusses the use of plaster to fill in every hole in the slate?

Can anyone explain why you would want to fill in all of the slate screw holes, even when they are well under the rail?

Just wondering if it's just one guy in my area that installs for one of the Brunswick dealers or if this is something they recommend for some reason.

Maybe

Is it possible the thought is by filling it, it adheres to the screw head helping to stop from backing out.

Not implying it is right or of any real use if the wood screwed to is good.

I am a dumbshit. I filled the holes that sit under the nose of the cushion on my Gold Crown even though they are technically not in the playing field, not holes under the rail though. I was afraid of a hole getting poked thru the cloth even though the area is between rail groove and rail. I did make tool though to punch little cardboard circles out to keep the Bondo out of the screw heads.

Here in Upstate New York, there were a couple of highly reputable mechanics, known to be associated with Brunswick. I have seen tables, worked on by both of these mechanics, where the screws were covered by plaster. I also had the same opinion, that the plaster may have been an attempt to keep the screws from backing out.

I've never seen a slate screw back out that was correctly installed, and I never fill in a slate screw hole within 3 1/2" from the outside edge of the oversized slates, as they're under the rails and make no difference.

I fully agree with you. I was just trying to understand the logic behind it, without actually hearing an explanation from the source. It still doesn't make sense to me, as I can't see a reason for slate screws to ever back out, but I also don't see any other reason for filling the holes. I certainly wouldn't say that these guys were hacks, so it somewhat baffles me to see this.

I like that idea
