"Science" an Improper Term? - Pocket Billiards is Knowledge, Physics and Geometry

So you think Efren plays best when he's science oriented?

Hey, that most think the term "science" is fine won't dissuade the man. He has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous .... and for no good reason ... other than for the purpose of posting again and again and again .... IMO.

Dave

So you think Efren plays best when he's science oriented?

Is Earl science oriented, how about Shane Van Boening?

Oh, you don't know? I'll sell you my new DVD series which covers the subject.
For $29.95, today only, you will receive three DVD's:
Touch of Outside (Science is the Teacher)
Efren Nye the Science Guy
The Million Dollar Challenge (How Earl ran 11 racks with Science!)

Global Warming.....it sounded scarier I presume.

Truth is a term for absolutes... Scientific knowledge historically has never been currently accurate and is always being tweaked, hence it is not an absolute, it is knowledge but not truth.

Jaden

Science makes changes about one out of every 20 years, (depending on funding).

They used to be scared of "Global Cooling" in the 70's, then they lost their funding and came with Global Warming.....it sounded scarier I presume.

This is even more ridiculous. Where did this nonsense come from ? You asked if " "Science" (is) an Improper Term". Most here said yes it is proper. I guess you don't like the responses

Physics, Geometry, Physiology, Knowledge and Kinesiology instead of just "science"

It's been approved and approaching a vote by all the members of AZBILLIARDS.

We will now use Physics, Geometry, Physiology, Knowledge and Kinesiology individually instead of grouping them all under "science"

Do I hear any objections?

Okay, let it be known that on January 13th 2015 .........

Why Kinesioloy is Important in Pocket Billiards.

Kinesiology is essential in pocket billiards, especially if you seek to have more power in our break, or snap in your stroking abilities.

I believe the action of the wrist is the most over-looked source of immediate improvement
.
There appear to be three different techniques for the wrist to assist the pocket billiards stroke. The first one is the wrists don't do much at all, the second is they cock up as you hit the cue ball and finish the stroke and the other is the wrists un-cock down as the cue ball is struck and the follow through is completed.

The way I play is definitely with the wrists un-cocking down as I contact the cue ball. I have been committed to this technique the last couple of days and it's amazing the results.

The thing about my technique is I can pre-cock my wrists very precisely and that was how I consistently produce powerful stoke shots with such accuracy. This, ironically is what I've been struggling with the most. I seemed to have lost my "power source" that effortlessly produced pin point accuracy when striking the cue ball.

Many of you will not benefit from this information (because the way you use your wrists work fine for you), and others will benefit immensely when you're still searching to improve your stroke and accuracy.

I personally found a missing part to my "personal puzzle" and I'm surprised I didn't "real eyes" how important this technique was for me. Sometimes the simplest answers complete the most complex problems {for myself}.

For some reason my "reasonable" mind says "use outside english", however a "Touch of Inside" produces best results, and my mind says "don't use the wrists", however un-cocking my wrists like I'm using a hammer is most effective, and my mind says "root against my opponent" when pulling for my opponent works best.

The key to life seems to be making myself do {at times} what I least "naturally" want to do. As I get "more experienced" I see that unfolding in many areas.

The two most powerful words in the English Language.

CJ,

I have known about the Law of Attraction for most of my adult life, being exposed to the teachings of Andrew Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, Norman Vincent Peale, Zig Ziglar and a number of other great men who have inspired millions of people to succeed in their lives.

The naysayers will say that The Law of Attraction is BS, but I believe it is not and my life is a testament to that theory. I know that my life would have not turned out nearly as well as it has, if I had not had not been open to this "secret".

As a matter of fact, more current representations of THE SECRET or THE LAW OF ATTRACTION have been recently created to make it possibly more attractive to our current budding generations. Australian television producer and author, Rhonda Byrne, has produced the movie, "THE SECRET" and while the movie suggests in a very vivid and modern way how this secret has been passed down through the generations for thousands of years to a few, it has always been available to those who opened their minds to it.

In a very finite way of my own explanation, The Law of Attraction suggests that if you focus your mind on practically any goal that you care to conceive, work on that goal, that you will establish a connection and attraction with the universe for just that which you desire. There are several steps to follow and those that think this is just a wishing well or a magic genie lamp, will never really "get it". It's nothing like that at all. In fact, it is more like a common sense thing, for example: If you wanted to play pool at a very high level, it might be valuable for you to learn from other pool players who have the knowledge you seek. If you think that just by seeking out the knowledge to the secrets of pool and wishing to be a pool champion, then you will be one of those that comes up very short. However, if you want something earnest enough, you will do whatever it takes to obtain that goal.

So yes, I believe very strongly in The Law of Attraction. It has been a natural part of my life since I was 21 years of age.

Many of the naysayers will wail to the top of their lungs that The Law of Attraction is bogus, bullshit, and that those who practice it or believe in it are charlatans, "snake-oil salesmen" etc. They will never tire of gnashing their teeth and explaining that science proves that The Law of Attraction is nonsense.

You see The Law of Attraction is not some mystical enchantment, it is a natural order of things and some people benefit from the explanation provided by people like Napoleon Hill, Andrew Carnegie and Rhonda Byrne.

I'm sure the haters will be biting their fingers to keep them from lambasting me for this post, but I suggest that The Law of Attraction is a simple and natural phenomena that anyone can use to help point them toward success. The fear of being muzzled will stifle some of their hatred but I expect some of the hate despite my explanation of The Law of Attraction.

It is a unique way to obtain focus on your life's goals and to keep them in your mind while on your life's journey.

I recommend adding to Rhonda Byrne's already VERY, FAT bank account and purchasing the movie, THE SECRET, along with her many books. Essentially, Rhonda has taken Andrew Carnegie's ideas that were shared with Napoleon Hill (Andrew got them from other sources) and packaged them attractively in a movie and book form. I think that in order for our dreams to succeed, we need to have something that helps us focus on those dreams and I think that is what The Law of Attraction does is just that.

The Law of Attraction is merely a tool that some can use to help keep them focused on their life's goals. Others may not need or want that tool and I understand that completely as it is their right.

I know that I would never have succeeded in my dreams if I did not learn how The Law of Attraction works through people like Zig Ziglar, Og Mangino, Dr. Denis Waitley and others like them. In a way, at least, to me, it is very natural method for directing you to and putting yourself in the way of all that you seek and that there is nothing mystical about it at all (and some people use it without ever having known what it was). Others have to read about it or hear about it from a friend or mentor.

Thank you.

Don't know what this has to do with the thread, but it seems you missed a few chapters. I say that since you put it in blue so no one would miss it that anyone that dares disagree with you is labeled a "hater". That the "haters" should think twice about posting anything that disagrees with you with the fear of being banned. No one is allowed to have a differing opinion than yours, or they are "haters". Totally goes against what you are trying to preach on here. Maybe you should go study some more.;)

Nice post, Joey, thanks.

What the mind can believe and conceive, it can also achieve" is the foundation that Napoleon Hill teaches, and he did consult Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ford (etc) about their "master mind" theories. Napoleon's work is evident in many personal power books. (Tony Robbins, Richard Bandler, etc)

The "Law of Attraction" is real, the biggest opponent we have (or will ever have) is ourselves. It's too easy to stay the same, and not put forth the effort to change and direct our own minds.

I have practiced 3 strokes with the wrist , when I was younger I had great power with little to no wrist movement I had a cannonball break and could hit all big stroke shots
Now at 55 I can't do that with a dead wrist
What I found s few yrs back was cocking the wrist back and snapping it thru the stroke gave back some of the lost power , then watching some other players who pre cocked thier wrist forward I tried that no question by precocking me wrist gave me much more power in the stroke
However I found it harder to get exact shape so I only use it when I need a big stroke

3) Maximum - for break shots and severe stroke/power draws or follows.

Yes, this is my experience as well.

I have basically three degrees of wrist-cock. You want the "wrist flick" to happen exactly at the cue ball. The release is like a hammer, or fishing/casting motion. However it's a miniature version so you don't see it as obviously (as fishing and hammering).

1) no needed wrist cock - finesse and slow rolling shots

2) 30-45 Degrees - medium to crisply hit shots.

3) Maximum - for break shots and severe stroke/power draws or follows.

Three degrees of wrist cocking? Who knew?

I'm going to study this and see what shakes out. I never looked at it this way, but it sounds like an interesting way to develop and control stroking power.

In lessons, I've been "in the zone," and actually put the cue ball a couple inches off the end rail, then by cocking my wrist exactly "Max," drew the cue ball back to the same spot twice in a row (third time was close, not exact).

Humans can't consciously do this, however, I adjust my wrist to give myself the best chance to let it happen. That's how I feel too, that the shot happens through me.

You will also notice that as you increase the angle, your shoulder will naturally be drawn up (jacking up on a shot does this, and is really the same technique, only not precisely controlled by many players). Try jacking up on a a ball without allowing your wrist to cock and you'll see what I mean. A good way to get the right angle is to hold your cue with your right hand on your right hip, and let the tip come up to eye level (with your right hand still on your hip) this is about 75% of what I would call maximum.

You see when you adjust the wrist angle you can go through the cue ball with great acceleration and still control power draw shots within inches (at 80-95%cue-speed). What do you think it will do to your overall game? Experiment and let me know if you have an questions.

It's like a forward press with a golf club

After aligning up with the cue cock you wrist forward in other words where will be after the stroke with the tip almost touching the cue ball make your practice pre stroke routine
Then hit the cue ball if done correctly you will feel it and see it.

We, pros, never stop trying to improve, from the stroke to the hand position

Actually, it cocks up, like holding your hands out from your hips and cocking the club head to eye level or above. Hank Haney used to make me do a drill over an over to stress this wrist motion. (Position "A" below shows the fully cocked position)

I also saw him do it a lot with Tiger Woods. This is training your wrist motion as precisely as possible, so you get more speed with less effort.

Many pool players have a wrist motion like in other sports/games, they just need to continue to seek to improve, this is a vital part of reaching your next level. (my wrist and hand movement is similar to my golf and tennis motion as well).

We, pros, never stop trying to improve, from the stroke to the hand position to the stance, it all has to be going forward, or you risk falling behind (this can eventually lead to a "slump")

75% of maximum!? That's like 110% for me. I have been blessed with a wrist that has very limited movement. It helps to cue straight I suppose but to get extreme action on the cue ball I have to time the shot perfectly. Cant rely on my wrist to do the work for me unfortunately. It means I have to hit the ball harder than most for a full table length draw which can sometimes go horribly wrong.

I asked you a question in the 'Keeping Still' thread but that thread sort of died. I asked if you release any of the fingers from the cue when you have to use a longer back stroke? I have tried many times to use the grip you use and cant quite get it to work for me. Your 'V' is quite horizontal compared to mine which is almost vertical. My wrist simply cant cope with having it that cocked. Only way I've been able to use a CJ style grip is if I release the little, ring and middle finger when pulling back. Thoughts?

I don't actually feel my hand do this, it's just allowed

Yes, my hand does have to open and at impact it closes firmly, unless it's a finesse shot. Some players even think of opening and closing their hand, there's nothing wrong with that. imo

The more I stop the cue from opening on the backstroke the more shoulder I have to use. I like to isolate the shoulder, elbow, and wrist sometimes in practice to fine-tune my game. Sometimes it's good to find ways to exaggerate to erase old programming.

I don't intentionally move my shoulder, although I do allow it to release tension from the back stroke - there's no attempt to keep it rigid or still. Shane does this shoulder motion beautifully, and you can tell he's connected from his shoulder, (arm, hand), to the tip.
