I realize it's an exhibition but...

They're playing call shot/call safe, 9-ball racked on the spot.

As if the rules and games aren't confusing enough to the casual fan... when it's confusing to hard core fans, then it just isn't making any sense.

Seems like call shot call safe could be done for 10 ball and traditional slop for 9 ball. A little variety...

Yeah, I was very confused until my wife told me they said it was call shot, call safe. A few racks ago Morra ran out to the 9 and then missed it, leaving a real tough cut for a Shaw. I was just paying attention to the balls and assumed it was Shaw who shot and missed the 9 completely.

Next thing you know, Shaw is taking BIH for an easy shot on the 9, and I'm totally lost. Then I realized what happened is that Shaw passed the shot back to Morra after he missed, and it was Morra who then missed the 9 entirely, not Shaw.

Heck, it's so confusing I'm still not sure I told it right. No, I don't care for these rules in 9-ball, but still, a great way to spend a Saturday night with my lady, watching these two monsters slug it out. ;)

I just don't understand why every event has to jack with the rules. I realize in this case the two players could agree to do cartwheels between shots if they wanted to, but playing 9 ball that way is pretty bizarre. Of course I've never liked call shot call safe in any game.

Call shot call safe stinks. Every since the Super Billiards Expo has used these rules, I have opted not to attend, even though it's less than two hours away by car. I used to go nearly every year.

In an exhibition format, I guess the players can choose any set of rules they like, but this is unfortunate for the fans.

Shaw 21-13

Thanks. If I am not mistaken he won 15-5 in 8 ball earlier plus this means 36-18. So he beats Morra double number of racks. Strong
This Jayson guy is flavour of month and the one to beat at this upcoming Bigfoot event

I agree!

This whole lets make the rules improve the game thing is getting out of control, I mean the game aint broke, hey its broke financially, but the play is fine!!

I hope this stops, I couldn't watch the match, it sucks... just rack the balls and play, we don't need two shot foul, I've played it many years as a young man, we don't need call shot or call foul. We just need more players. playing at a higher level who get better payouts for the efforts.

Your right,

The game is hard enough as it is, a little luck is fine, no call anything, just play.

Sorry, but I like it.

At the risk of being ridiculed, I prefer these rules
to the basic Texas Express rules that are normally
used.It favors the better player and takes most of
or a high percentage of luck out of the game. Where
as playing the usual 9/10 ball, if you make a good
hit, slop counts.

Most of the time slop shots are not a factor, especially
in a longer set. However, rolls can be your enemy any
given set. How many sets have we all played where we
couldn't buy a roll. They say it averages out over time,
but meanwhile, your opponent just got 9 rolls to your 1
and beat you 11-2 in the process. He missed 5 wide
open shots and somehow, the cue ball, gets hemmed
in to where it's all you can do to make a good hit and
getting safe was the furthest thing from your opponents
mind as he was simply trying to run out, only to dog the
ball and get safer than he would have trying to play a
safe...lol. It's funny how this can keep happening over
and over, but on the rare occasion it does happen.

The downside to call shot, call safe is it takes away 2
way shots. The upside is........if your opponent dogs a
ball and the cue balls gets tucked in there tighter than
an Alabama tick, you can give that shot back to him.
Now that I like. These rules don't really change the game
from a breaking standpoint, but they change the game
during play and give the better (smarter) player the
advantage.

Don't get me wrong, I get my share of the rolls from time
to time, but at least when you win or lose under these
rules, you most likely proved you were the better player
that particular set.

Sorry to disagree, I was just sharing my thoughts from
a different vantage point than you guys.

I understand the call pocket on either 9 or 10 balls to eliminate/reduce the total luck factor but don't like call shot/safety rule as this takes away the 2 way shots ... which, in my opinion, is a strategy and an integral part of the game.

It also slows down the game ...

I believe the players agreed on the rules. Shouldn't it be up to them?

Pros make the money ball in the wrong pocket im guessing one in 500 times or so. Certainly not enough times to warrant a rule especially when you factor in the huge number of asswipes crying "you didnt call it" on a straight in shot.
