Developing the New Generation of Pocket Billiard Players - What Can We Do?

The most significant action any one person can take to attract young people to our great game is to open a brand new billiard room....and not just any kind of room. It must be a room that is ultra-public and a businees that a community can be comfortable with and be proud of. Nothing creates players like a good new room. The business of attracting new players to our game and keeping them involved is a LOCAL endeavor.
Your right, like they say about politics "All politics is local". The most the average person can do to improve anything is within a 20 mile radius of where they are standing right now. Big things are made up of a lot of small parts.

we wake up in an entirely different world on a daily basis.

I do have an open mind, I also live in the real world. What I said is true.

True for you maybe, I make no judgments, however, for others I will point this fact out.

There is no universal truths, things are constantly changing - we wake up in an entirely different world on a daily basis. Everything is vibrating, moving and changing, even thoughts, without unique thinking there would be no internet, Amazon, Pay Pal, Google cell phones, or drones.

The key to business evolution has always been technology, and it's vastly different now than even 10 years ago.

The real key to it all is room owners that want to have a family friendly pool room and grow the sport. Room owners willing to give their time to educating, instructing new players, regardless of age.

I see empty tables where I play. I wonder why a free once a week pool clinic could not be done, except the owners do not see it as a priority.....and it is what I consider family friendly and not a bar with pool tables.

Nor a weekend youth handicapp league anywhere.

It's the room owners that have the long term future of pool in their hands.

Imagine what a group of like minded room owners could accomplish. A group of owners that do not glorify hustlers, the dirty, gritty side of pool. That wants to change the imagine of pool to a more positive one. That wants to pool in the media and works to do so.

Room owners will to support school programs by free table time to the students.

I notice the focus has been on youths, but another segment is being over looked....the senior player, the returning player that did 20-25 years ago before kids and such. This is me.

How come no senior discount over 65? Hell Denny's does at 55.

Just some random thought. In the near future, I hopefully will open a room and use these ideas.

Of course, the room is gonna have good eats which where I hope to balance it all out. Like having a lunch special. One hour of pool with lunch for two or more.

Also, kids are 1/2 price with a playing adult.

No, the key to it all is ESPN coverage. Reaching millions has an impact, reaching a few hundred doesn't.

My private club had 630,000 Private Members, surely the entire pool world can be many more than that. How did I generate 630,000 private members?

ESPN OF COURSE, it's more powerful than an "atomic promotional explosion" - when done right, of course, and that's an entire story unto it's self. ;) CLICK PICTURE FOR ESPN POOL HALL COMMERCIAL

"NO"??? Well run pool rooms around the country have nothing to do with growing the sport?
First, every sport on TV for any reason is entertainment, nothing else. People watch sports for only one of several reasons. 1. entertainment value. That is short lived and they quickly get board..

Even a Superbowl if it gets one sided, people start leaving to beat the traffic and changing channels.

2. They can bet on it, they have a personal interest in the outcome.

3. regional interest, team loyalty. Just attend any small town baseball or football game and you will see what that is. Beyond that people don't really care anything about watching sports even those who play them.

Pool has a real problem in that it is not at all entertaining. Every shot is not that much different from the last and after a short time the audience has seen enough.

Pool is like a magician who tries to do a 2 hour show but only knows three tricks and he keeps doing the same tricks over and over for 2 hours. To an audience this is what pool is like.

You tell us, why would ESPN put pool on TV? Who would their audience be and why would they be watching?

ESPN puts sports on TV because they get paid to, that's the business they are in.

The last time ESPN was given a proposal about pool was when Matt Braun approached them about some special events over 10 years ago.

The Game can't be shown the way it currently is, the entertainment value is too low. The good news is it's going to change, and the pool world will never be the same again.

Just needs a touch of inside, right?

It does need TOI, a "Touch of Integrity". ;)

This is exactly it!!!

I love how people can call you a troll and talk so much $hit about you and you just brush it off!

It's like working on a $hit farm and your trying to clean the place up! It can be done, with a lot of hard work and dedication. And CJ, you definitely have all of that x10 and then some compared to anyone AND everyone else!!!

Good luck sir!

Human nature is an interesting phenomenon, and usually predictable.

It's just a matter of time before this entire scenario will change.

However, human beings are resistant to change, even if they know it's in their best interest. Human nature is an interesting phenomenon, and usually predictable.

This is absolutely not true. Your high profile gives you no right to lie. Are you aware of 100% of all proposals that went through their offices in the last 10 years?

ESPN has been given proposals about pool in the last 10 years. People are not waiting for you CJ.

As for the rest of your paragraph, it's laughable. There are quality pool productions on TV in Europe, Asia and some of it in the USA (on ESPN 3).

The sweet sound of Thor's hammer striking CJ's forehead.

If there was a proposal that I'm unaware of please post it

This is the information I last received. I am talking about USA specifically, what goes on in Europe, or Asia was not mentioned. I did say ESPN, not ESPN 3.

If there was a proposal that I'm unaware of please post it, according to my marketing agency there has been none presented in the last 10 years. I do know Barry Hearn ask them to pay to broadcast the Mosconi Cup, and that went over like a lead-balloon.
