TipPads???

what are all the types of tip pads used on ferrules? I know some are fibre and can soften the hit of a harder tip and can be used to protect the ferrule from getting damaged. But anyone use a plastic material? I know carbon fiber has been used as well. Pictures and the experience or benefits of using different materials other than the fibre would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kamui Clear?

After Kamui came out with the clear pad, one of the makers from New Zealand made up a few clear ones from CDs.

Maybe he will see this and give you the skinny on them. You could make your own if you had a small Forstner bit or a small enuff hole saw.

Lots of different plastic materials that you could play with.

OB uses real carbon. The others that one can buy are just some sort of fiber material.

I have clear, white and black acryllic on order, so players can have that Kamui look, regardless of what tip they prefer.
I have fibre pads on all my shafts, I dont feel it chabges the hit in a noticable way, I like the extra protection a fibre pad offers.

for variety of tip pads you should be looking at Russian pyramid cues market, sometimes the makers install short ferrules for protection but they are not fancied by players very much. So the makers use some tip pads to protect bare wood from cracking. Fibre pads are common, polycarbonate (acrylic) is what Kamui use now, but this material is not in use, only few tried making such pads and they seem not as great as the most popular type - fiberglass. That's kind of a material used for computer motherboards base (fiberglass, phenolic resin, epoxy resin). I will post a picture or two when I manage to find a couple in my trash bin

I was under the influence that Fibre pads were pretty soft? Acrylic being pretty hard? but on the Muellers site it says Acrylic pads are softer the both Fibre and Carbon fiber?

I thought Carbon would be hardest fallowed by Acrylic and last Fibre?

Im looking for peoples experience on using pads, say medium soft ferrule material and a Medium hard tip with a pad why do you like using a pad or not?

I don't want to waste my time buying the material and installing it without knowing what people liked or disliked about installing certain pads.

My current setup is a Mezz WX700 with a Milkdud.

Pictures would be great.

I seriously doubt that yourself, or anyone else would be able to tell the difference between a small pad and without.

The only time that I will use a pad is when I install a break tip. Then I use an OB carbon pad on most. Fiber on some.
When changing a Phenolic tip to non phenolic, I will face off and leave a tiny phenolic pad on the ferrule.

That and if you are trying to protect an ivory ferrule or making the tip of your cue pretty with a blue or red one.

A buck a piece for an acrylic pad. Ha. You can get many from a CD disc.

I just made a note to self. Next time at Canadian Tire, buy a Forstner bit.

I have found that most window shops also keep in stock certain thicknesses of Acrylic, or whatever clear plastic they may use as a window covering. They have tons of scrap and will probably give out a handful for a buck.

HH7, I know yer a good guy but, I think that you are over thinking this tip pad thing way too much. If your heart is bent on it, just put one on and see what you think.

You can buy a bunch from Royce at OB, a pack of 50, Black, Blue and Red for a couple of dollars from Atlas Supply.

Prather and Schmelke probably have some too. Personally, if going for the added strength part, I would just get some from OB.

You absolutely can't bend those little buggers in half. And the next tip change, no need change the pad, just rough it a bit and add another tip. The same with a plain fiber pad. Those are good for a couple of tip changes or more.

In fact, I have to buy some more from OB anyway, and I am way over stocked on Black fiber. PM me and tell me how many you'd like and I will put them in an envelope for you. I can send you one or 2 carbon and a half dozen or ten fiber ones.

Thanks, I think your right bout over thinking it sometimes the sponge in my head just wants to soak up to much for no reason lol

Thanks though for the offer, I may start using them for the strength aspect as you said.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger on that one. When something interests me, I tend to want to know everything that I can also.

You only need them for protecting ivory.

okay, like promised I managed to take some photos of the pads usually used for Russian pyramid cues (apart from common pads available from known sellers). See post #6 fro description of material used

and that's where Kamui Clear started

managed to dig out first samples of the tips the manufacturer sent to the dealer who passed them to our company as that is where the idea was born. So we got them for testing back then. Note the temporary hardness rating marked. And would you like Clear in burgundy color like they first had? I have no idea why they didn't go for more colors. Maybe that's their next marketing thing? :p
