Custom cue question

I'm thinking about having a sneaky made and I'm curious if I'd be cheaper to order it without points as I'm looking for performance rather than appearance. I want a solid hit with a long taper and about a 12.75 shaft. The best hitting cue I've ever played with belonged to Scott Lewis and was a Richard Black. Any help or suggestions are appreciated

A sneaky is made from a full splice blank so it's going to have points. You can order a cue without points, but then it's no longer a sneaky. I think, from most makers, a sneaky is going to be your cheapest option as they use a pre-made full-splice blank and just finish it out and put their shaft on it. Constructing a merry widow (no point cue) from scratch is typically more involved I think.

There are solid 1-piece wood butts, not sure how that would compare to a sneaky...my guess would be about the same.

I would go with a traditional build vs. a sneaky pete. The reason I favor the traditional basic cue over the SP is that I as a builder have a little more control over the balance and weight of the cue. With a sneaky pete you have less options build wise unless you section the butt.

If you're trying to save money, my suggestion would be to buy a blank from Schmelke or Cue Components and send it to the cue maker. You can buy a blank between $60-$120 I think, and if you just want a collar, butt cap, and 1 shaft you'll probably spend $250-$400 to have it converted by a reputable cue maker.

A lot of cue makers who still put out sneakies buy their blanks from these places anyway.

Wait ... first let me get this out of the way ... Yeah, yeah, yeah ... blah blah ...

That was for all the coming BS. LOL

The best playing, affordable, sneaky I ever played with that had a nice long taper was a Meucci. CK ebay, there may be some good used ones too.

How bout you find someone else to f#%ck with. If I'm not mistaken you have a habit of this. If you can't answer without being a smart ass then don't reply

i probably should not stick my nose in the middle of you and dave m
BUT
you said this

he suggested you call richard black
he made a joke of your getting high comment
personally i think you flew off the handle in appropriately
jmho

Careful now Dave, I think sneakys have new meanings now. I've seen on here and talked to cuemakers in the area with people asking for a sneaky with a wrap or "fancy Sneaky's". Hell, I always thought it was just supposed to look like a bar cue.

You may be right. The first post seemed pretty sarcastic as the only help he offered was a smart comment and the second seemed the same... As in stating the obvious. I can take good ribbing and I may well have over reacted. Sometimes it's hard to know how to take a comment and if I took it wrong he has my apologies

I have a Ted Harris "sneaky" and it plays great.....according to me (and others) that have played with it. Hit is subjective.
Probably more in the $1,000 + or - range.

Just buy a R Black if you liked the way it played. Usually they're very reasonable compared to new - might have to go with a "normal" cue though, never seen a sneaky Black.
Jason <----not being sarcastic :)

Well a "sneaky" without points is not a sneaky since every house cue I've seen has "points". It's tough not to be a smart ass with a reply to this question because it's like someone asking if they order a blue car but hold the blue if it will be cheaper.

Maybe you were asking about a plain jane or merry widow, both of those are cues without points that are not a "sneaky".

Either of those from a custom maker would get you the same thing for less than one with points or inlays.

Sneaky Pete cues, all have points https://www.google.com/search?q=cue...a=X&ei=Ag_uVKHfA8OMyASWjYLwAg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg You can't ask for a no point Sneaky because the design with the points from the splice is built into the definition of a Sneaky.

Merry Widow (one of my favorite designs) no points https://www.google.com/search?q=mer...a=X&ei=Jw_uVNzlH42qyQS3jYHgBA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg

Plain Jane (similar to Merry Widow but I think that term is for a less fancy cue, often without any rings) https://www.google.com/search?q=mer...gBA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg#tbm=isch&q=cue+plane+jane

I can understand that but if you don't deal in cues then there's no way in hell you'd know that. I am a body technician and painter and I don't responded to everyone that ask me a question about something they know little or nothing about as if their stupid. They're not suppose to know. In my world I would look at a lot of people as if they're stupid if I thought that way. Think about it

I interpreted the question to be in relationship to a full spliced cue without veneers.
Of course it's going to have points.
In other words, something like a Schmelke blank instead of a John Davis blank.
If the intent is a merry window, the question wouldn't make any sense at all.

Learning though osmossis. I don't paint cars but I know what a clearcoat is just through driving them for almost 30 years and I know that those Macco paint specials suck. It just seeps in after a while.

If you did not notice, there is a lot of sarcasm and funny replies on this forum. I just start out by thinking nothing anyone writes if fully serious.

Think of it like your best friend calling you a brainless ugly ape if you forget your keys at home or something. On here you have 100 best friends calling you an ugly ape :)

Oh, and rotate your avatar pic please, I keep wanting to turn my head when I see it, unless you actually have your table bolted to the wall that is.

Oh #2, did you actually want to get a Sneaky or one of the other type?

+1

I don't know the OP and probably never will, outside of threads on this forum. Obviously the OP has heard "Sneaky" or "Sneaky Pete" before. At least he said "Sneaky" and not "Sneaky Peak." That just drives me up the wall. :p

I honestly can't even think of something to relate to a sneaky pete without points. Oh wait... I got it!

RB cues start at $1700 according to his website. Close to $1400 more than I want to spend lol

Look at Jesse Gilberts thread on here about Steve Klapp sneakies.

335 with an old growth shaft. Killers. He made one for me and I got offers to sell it for 5-600 based on the hit alone.
