10 Ball On the Bar Box

We are going to see more and more open and invitational tournaments on the 7' Bar Box. IMO the only game that will work well with pros is 10 ball, race to about 9, alt break. 9 ball is a joke for a strong "B" player and up on the box. 8 ball choice after break sucks IMO. Anything played on the box needs a shot clock. You can even play 11 ball and 12 ball with 10 ball rules.

Further down the road if indeed BB tournys increase, pockets can be made smaller or go to the snooker type pockets. Johnnyt
 
Looks like Dave Coles of the Carom Room agrees with you. He's having a 2,000 entry fee, Race to 15 (take what you make, winner break) 8 ball on the Diamond Bar Boxes at the end of next month. Taking up to 16 players and I think 12 have already paid.
 
Aren't the bar table tourneys more popular because they get more entries? Don't they get more entries because more people feel like they have a better chance to win? Why change it to give the pros a bigger advantage? That would only thin out the fields.

I think this is the first time that I agree with you, Johnny. :yikes:

Maybe it's the second. I don't remember.

10 ball on a barbox is absolutely more difficult on a bar table. I believe due to the break.

I agree, 9ball BB with or without the magic rack is a joke for a pro level shooter. In an alternate break format the most important stroke is the lag then. Either shim the pockets or get more balls on the table.

Good idea for pro

I think JohnnyT is spot on when he suggested smaller pockets for the 7' tables. The only 7' table I enjoy shooting on is a Diamond.

Even then, it's very easy to tell the difference between a standard Diamond 7ft and a Diamond 7ft with pro cut pockets. Make the pockets smaller, play 10-ball, chunk the magic rack, get a neutral racker, and we have the future of pool.

Never thought about their pockets being cut different. Heck, they could make them an inch bigger and I would still miss.

I think you guys are right about the small tables, and there would be tournaments everywhere. Would you rather see the tables made with snooker type pockets, or American style with just tighter pockets and deeper shelves.

If the U.S had a real pro tour I'd say snooker pockets...but we don't, so have to settle for 4 1/2" on 7' Diamonds. Johnnyt
 
We had a 9 Ball Tournament for Pros on 7 ft Valleys with red circle cue ball. Race to 21 winner breaks. Can anyone guess what the high run/biggest package was?

Was Shane and ten more top tier players playing or 95% regional players? Johnnyt

Can't remember the number, but wasn't it lower than the typical run on a Diamond 7ft?

It was all top Pros. Sky Woodward defeated SVB for the hot seat and to win the tournament. Rodney Morris went 2 and out. High run was 6 by Warren Kiamco.

We might as well skip 10-ball and go straight to 15-ball! I would actually argue that 15-ball rotation is much more difficult on a smaller table because of the limited amount of space for cue ball movement and more clustering.
