Listening to music while playing

it is my understanding, at least here in Atlanta, it is not "legal" to wear buds or earphones while in a match, however, if you ask your opponent for permission, 99% of the time he approves. that being said, I have many kinds of music on my ipod and select the "mix" option so I never know what is coming next. the music includes, Pavarotti, joe bonamasa, classic rock (a lot of pink Floyd), classical and even the Tibetan monks' chant(10 minutes) but never ever country or hard metal. with the majority of the age group in their 20's I have to block out the rap and hard metal somehow!
Where at in Atlanta is it not legal? I have lived here and played in every major tourney at one time or another and never heard of this being a problem. Maybe your local leagues with the cry babies but that is it.
It is so hard to narrow it to just one I have such a variety in taste... but picking just one I'm picking A Tribe Called Quest. Just about everything they have put out is so smooth. Listening to them makes any activity better.

I only started wear earbuds this year, and only during league play, and even then I don't always wear them. I've been a retail manager for so long I've trained myself to listen to all the conversations around me, so I can keep track of what my people are doing with their customers. Unfortunately, there is no off switch for that, so against some teams or players I like to try and shut their chatter out some... I usually just use one ear bud tho...
I put my phone on shuffle, and just listen to whatever pops on. I used to be a DJ years ago, so there is a little bit of everything on my phone. My preference would be classic rock, or blues. Some 80's pop stuff is fun too.

I don't pay attention to whatever music is playing. We have a live jazz band that plays every Thursday at the local pool hall, during the city-wide men's league (of course). After doing that whole thing for a certain amount of time, you learn to tune out the outside stuff and focus on the table. Or you wear ear plugs like a few of my teammates. I tune it out and focus on the game. I think it shows mental weakness when you have to wear earbuds or listen to something so specific to play some pool. Tune out the noise and play the game.
Instead of playing music that I like on the jukebox, I prefer to get a WTF reaction from the room by sneaking weird music into the usual boring same ole, same ole.
I like to wait until about 9 or 10 o'clock and drop something like "22 Going On 23" or "Sweat Loaf" by Butthole Surfers. Pretty much anything off their album Locust Abortion Technician.

I like feel good music and don't like head banger, high pitched electric guitars, rap, filthy lyrics, etc. If some one else wants to listen to it have at it, I can always leave the room if I find it a pain. I like a bunch of the old folk rock from the 60's and 70's and a bunch of what was called "soul music from that era and old love songs and some country music. Just give me good music from good musicians with good voices where I can actually understand the words. I don't wear ear plugs unless I'm on my riding lawn mower. If I'm really trying to be serious about my game I don't want any loud music.

sorry I was not clear on that matter, a league operator sponsored a handicapped tournament and that is what he told everyone playing but after asking an opponent for permission, no one was turned down. I do not know about non-handicapped rules.

I looked for "My Ding a Ling" on the jukebox, but it was not available without paying for a search. I imagine that the whole place would stop playing and sing along.
If I listened to an mp3 player, I might chose Stars and Stripes Forever on a repeating loop. At work, I have played a 10 hour repeating video of What is Love (with the pigeons) for hours. A nice beat that I don't tire of.

I love doing that. The Touchtunes internet jukeboxes have a smartphone app now so you can queue up songs right from your phone. Stealth mode.
I'll always spend the extra credit to make sure Detachable Penis plays next right in the middle of someone's $20 Nickelback block
I listen to all types with ear buds in during practice or small weekly tournies... seem to play the best when listening to trip-hop (Massive Attack, Tricky, Lovage, Dan the Automator, Got a Girl, Portishead) or hip-hop (Wu, Deltron 3030).
But I also love some NIN or anything from any of Maynard James Keenan's bands.

I thought the OP was asking what kind of music people listen to when playing? Why are people throwing in their opinion on people who listen to music when they play? I generally don't listen to music during competition play (league/tournament), but I do listen when I'm practicing. I like my electronic music (mostly trance), but I can't do the high-tempo stuff. sometimes Above & Beyond (both the Group Therapy album and weekly podcast), but usually it's some downtempo/deep house (yes, I know what's called "deep house" nowadays isn't really deep house, that's just what it's called for now. Discussion for another forum). My personal favorites are any mix from Jody Wisternoff or Lane 8, the Anjunadeep podcasts, and top of my list is Andrew Bayer's album "If It Were You, We'd Never Leave". If you like emotional glitch-hop and downtempo, chilled out music, that album is amazing. All you metal and classic rock guys will probably hate it, to each his own.

I must be a real sensory person, I can't wear a glove, I have to be able to feel the cue, and I can't wear earbuds because I have to be able to hear around me. If I put on the music (pretty much only when I'm at home) it's all 80's, all the time. If I'm at a bar or the pool hall all I need is background noise so it really doesn't matter what's on. I have played in front of people when it was stark quiet, man, that was awful.
