A Crash Course In Forum Etiquette-

Recently,
I have committed a major forum etiquette faux pas, by jumping into a thread and taking it off topic with an association I had made.

While I am not new to the pool world, the forum is not my realm,
I do not purport to know it's in's and out's.

I have good grasp on most things but I'll share with you a story from SBE in 2008.

I was seated at a table with many AzB'rs, and the word "avatar" was being thrown around,
yet I had no familiarity with it, so I ask,

"What's an avatar?"

Timberly's jaw dropped,
gasps from every person...
If you could have seen the looks of disbelief on the faces of everyone at my ignorance-

I came to realize I had just asked the equivalent of,
"What's a pool ball?"

If I don't understand, I ask.
People make mistakes, correct them...

JV, dude,
you kicked my ass before offering me the guidance of additional sub-threads, and closing with links...
rather, you cut me up and challenged my merit at every turn instead.

Teach, guide, lead.

I had to ask 3 different posters what the hell I did before I became clear of my error.

Won't happen again.

Well IMO, whatever happened, a new thread like this does not seem the logical response. If you feel an apology is necessary, do it in that thread and then forget about it 3 seconds later

lighten up dude.

she makes a thread about making a mistake in her response to another poster. she is modre or less saying people should teach proper ways of responding.

the 1st reply to her thread is some one telling her she made a mistake starting a thread acknowledging she made a mistake.

geeeez

100% agree !...No one has made more screw-ups, in transitioning from the spoken, to the written word, than
yours truly ! (damn new-fangled computers :o)..I think her apology was very appropriate, and commendable.

Threads become like living entities at times. They go off course but can very easily be brought back. If discussing a topic & someone makes a relationship, I see nothing wrong with briefly discussing it. The original poster can always simply ask that that topic be taken to it's own thread. It seems that sometimes certain individuals would rather cut someone's head off in a thread, which is OFF TOPIC. That can very often lead to a total derail for a time being.

If, everyone would try to act civil & courteous as they would to their mother, this would be a better place & more good communication could then happenwith much much less wasted effort & wastes of time.

All of the above are just my opinions.

Best Wishes to All,
Rick

I think it's very true that oftentimes, written words on internet forums like az get misconstrued because the emotion, subtleties, and intent may not be so easy to pick up on.

Take SJD, for instance. His postings are consistently filled with love and adoration for fellow posters yet, on occasion, it may not be so obvious. :D

All kidding aside, Angel, you may not have been given the benefit for being a noob that you may have deserved because you have been a member here for a few years and have certainly been a part of the pool scene for a long time.

Makes sense that this doesn't necessarily translate to knowing forum etiquette.

Count me in as another pool junkie who wishes you well with your movie and other projects. We can sure use a boost like what a great movie could provide.

I think she should be commended on the actions she took to right this horrible wrong, and show this community of liars, muggers, and thieves, what true character is really about.
In addition, I haven't got a freaking clues as to what the hell you are all taking about, and my guess is the other thirty-nine thousand members don't either.
Also, if I had a nickle for every time I took a topic off course with my inane, and barely humorous wit, I'd be richer than Jay and Dick combined. I say, let's put this all behind us and move on to more important issues.
Could anyone tell me what Efren's favorite tip glue is?

Nicely stated, Angel, and totally ironic.....someone being rude to a forum noobie regarding forum etiquette. Hmmm, what's wrong with this picture?

Keep on keeping on, and I hope to see more posts from you here. They are refreshing.

I think he is old school & prefers Elmer's.

My name is Rick & I am NOT a certified instructor. Please make your own determinations.

I've used English for the 1st. 46 yrs. Now I'm using TOI...& English too!

Not to stray too far 'off topic' Rick, but in noticing your sig line, I just wanted to mention, that I've been using English all my life too. (with acceptable success)...However, I only used 'TOI', when it was absolutely necessary !..If you were to ask..99% of all good players would tell you they'd prefer having a root canal, to using inside English, on every shot ! :(

PS..IMHO, one "certified instructor" promoting the supposed [sic] benefits of 'TOI'..is definitely "one too many" ! :sorry:  :D
.. Promoting Elmer's glue, is much more sensible, (and less harmful to 'newbie's :o)

Angel,

We all make mistakes. I regretted my acerbic reply as soon as I sent it. I think we worked it out via PM. Do not let this hang with you because in the scope of things it was nothing.

I try to keep out of the way and generally do not enter the hot exchanges. I was in the women's shoe business and all we did was yell and fight. We fought with customers, factories, and each other. I am retired and had enough conflict. However, I do love some of the wit and humor that come in some of the Phoenix threads.

Pool needs ambassadors such as you and I admire what you are doing. Let go of what happened and move forward, you have more supporters than you realize. Me for one!

All the best,
Sincerely,
Phil

There's a time & place for both.

I'm just starting to play some One Pocket & hardly if ever use TOI when playing it.

I've been mostly an 8 baller & use both TOI & English about equally.

I think CJ went to it for good reasons given his circumstances.

I'm sure you've heard the joke, 'Take my wife................

Please?

Well...given the topic of this thread could you please treat me like your mother when you were 6 or 7 years old... & Maybe CJ too.

Best Wishes to You, Sir.

You've been here for a little under 6 years, with only 332 posts. So, it would seem you've been lurking mostly. Lurkers usually read, a lot, and know their way around the forums. That's why you were given the response you so rightly deserved.

The digital world is common place, there are no excuses.

I wouldn't worry overly Angel. Thread Drifting is quite common and sometimes it does take the topic down another interesting road.

There were a couple of members who practiced the Art of Drift on a daily basis.

Now that I said that, if I were a more interesting person, I might suggest that everyone talk about me for a few posts.

I have some ham, green pepper, onions, cheese, and mushrooms so I do believe that this is the kind of omelet that I will make for dinner. I think that I will cut the cheese slices in points. I can use the peppers and mushrooms for inlays. I will call it, My Pool Cue Omelet.

Hey, what is everyone else making for dinner. I wonder what a Kraft Dinner omelet would taste like. I guess that I could make one and then I would know, right.

Hey, here is an idea. Drop in at NPR. We can Drift a Recipe Thread into Politics in one post.

HAM ?? Y'all don't call it Canadian Bacon up north ;)

Honestly, I have heard the term but have no idea what it is. I thought bacon was bacon.

It is probably Side Bacon, which is very good. A little more meat and less fat. I usually buy a few pounds at a time from the Butcher and cut it myself.
Pork has been pricey in Canada. There was some Porcine disease that wiped out many hog operations locally and further out. Almost can't afford to use pork butt to make sausage any longer. Cheaper to eat beef.

Standard glue, the secret is he adds 1 drop of blood from a chicken sacrificed at exactly midnight on a full moon.

Awwwwww man I just ran this thread off topic, sorry.

you're a bigger man, than many, Angel.
i don't know what went down, but i'm pretty sure you were probably documenting The State of Pool?

almost every poster herein, has helped me when i was an idiot. (and KK9 wasn't available) when a response to me went out of context, i would either PM them for help (yáll know who you are), and/or they would PM me ASAP & tell me where i f*cked up - so that i could correct it ASAP.

they're good guys. and they are forgiving. they've got your back.

Much Gratitude PL
