It's a done deal so I'm not going to go back and ask him to cover half now. I know better than to let people use my cues though. It's like I have a black cloud over my head when it comes to cues. Something bad always happens. Granted, this is the worst thing that has happened though.
He didn't do anything differently than I do. Nothing sounded weird. He didn't even realize anything had happened until he started to walk away from the table.
What I find interesting about it is the shaft didn't split with the grain. It actually split up the shaft perpendicular to the grain. I don't mean across the shaft. The split starts at the joint and goes up the shaft, just perfectly 90 degrees from the grain lines. I figured the split would have followed the grain.
It's just a freak thing I guess.
No need to name the maker. I have nothing but respect for the man and the great work he does. He's known worldwide and is up towards the top of the food chain when it comes to custom cues. It wasn't anything he did and if it was I have no doubt he would fix it or replace the shaft at no charge. That's just how he is. Like I said though, it was nothing he did. I'll leave it at that.
Wasn't really what I was thinking................
I more thinking I don't really care about who broke the shaft or who made the shaft.
it was ,more like how can we get your shaft replaced for the least amount of money.
I was going to offer to make you a new shaft at my cost.....
I have respected your honesty and your ability to not be all upset about it.
So I needed to know what style of joint it has, because I only have done flat faced joints...
I didn't really want to say this in my first post because I was kind of checking the problem out and if you are low on funds then I was going to offer my services.
If your well off then you can afford to take care of this problem yourself.
That's it, that was my intension, not to bash anyone in any way........
How would you all have handled the situation?
I didn't take it that way at all. I just didn't want to throw his name out there, that's all. I was more concerned it would sound like I was bashing him and I wanted to make it clear that I wasnt.
Sometimes I don't come across how I intend to and I apoligize if that was the case here. You're very kind to make such a gesture and believe me, it's appreciated. It's good to know there are still nice people out there, like yourself, who would do something like this for someone.
I have had communication with the maker though and he already offered to take care of it for about half what he would normally charge just because I'm so bummed out about it.
Thanks again! Very gracious gesture on your part.

1 tiger x 1 ob2 and one locusi Admittedly they were early models, however all played a lot but no splits until after a year or so. I'm semi pro and take xlent care of all my gear. HMMM ActuallyIa've reworked a few older std h maple shafts that are really much more OK at this time. ThanksI don't know what you could do, if anything, to repair an LD shaft that is splitting. I would assume it's more complicated than repairing a solid maple shaft. That's interesting though. I've never heard of several different LD shafts splitting in the same area. Are they all from the same maker?
My shaft that split isn't LD. It's a solid maple old growth shaft. I feel for you though.
You played, jump, and broke all with one cue? Jesus. I'm surprised it didn't break sooner...
But OP, you are very kind.
It's funny you say that because just a month or two ago I saw a shaft split at the joint like mine did for the first time. It was a purple heart shaft on my buddy's break cue. His didn't have a collar either. I thought it was kind of weird in his case because...well, it was a break cue. Why not put a collar on the shaft and make it stronger?
It's common sense.I always use the same cue for all 3, why would it break?
Btw, been doing this for 20+ years
