I think Buddy Hall once said, "if the pockets are too big, just up the bet and they'll tighten up quite a bit!".

Anytime the money gets up there and things are going to slow down. And that's on any table size too.

There's quite a bit of cash on the line in down in Houston. If that's the tournament you're referring to.

Slight correction, Royce. It was Fats who said, "Pockets too loose? Raise the bet. They'll tighten up."

Pro Pool players have more in common with porn stars though from peanuts earnings to turning tricks on side to having nice racks and terminology like shaft, tit, money shot

Are you trying to give pornstars a bad rap?:D

Aloha

So maybe we need to get someone from the porn industry to sponsor pro pool. We wouldn't have to worry too much about the dress code with scantily clad women running around. Might even bring the viewers in, who knows. Somebody contact Larry Flint and get this going. U.S. Open, sponsored by Hustler. I like it.

Buddy said that Fats said that. Two guys came over to Fats and said they wanted to gamble some but the pockets on the table were too big. Fats said, "bet a little higher, they'll tighten up."

That should not be true. Case in point, the recently uploaded videos of the Last Call for Nine Ball for 40K. They did not slow to a boring level of play. Shot clocks should be at all pro events. The problem is, pro events are all over the place, with no real Board running a legitimate tour. This also hinders large sponsorship, TV time etc..., as who is there to advocate for such things?

This rang a bell for me... so I went looking for an old post of mine on RSB (from 1999, I think):

This is disturbingly similar to how x-rated films are shot. The director tells the actors when to begin, decides (incorrectly) what's exciting, never misses the all-important "money shot," and all the way through just generally doesn't get it. All that's missing is to shoot the 9-ball across the opponent's belly and then everybody lights up Camels.

It killed at the time (Cornerman laughed, anyway). Maybe it belongs in the "Hustlers" thread...

I'm not familiar with the "Last Call for Nine Ball" tournament.

Was it a pro tournament?

A shot clock is fine, and I actually like what they do for play. But, if there isn't one being used, the players will slow down. Period! It's completely natural. They are there to try to make money by beating the other guy. Pro level pool is a mind game and the one who makes the mental mistakes loses. They are going to be very deliberate about everything they do so they don't make any mistakes.
