So I just came back from a local bar $5 tournament. And im pi$$ed I was running the table. All I have is the 2,6,and 8 left. im shooting the 2 ball in the corner pocket ,its behind the head string about a ball width from the rail it is a little more than a ball from the 9 that is also a bought a ball from the rail center of the table runs right through the gap between the 2 and 9. The cue ball is at the other end of the table all the way against the rail almost dead center . I pause breath and stroke. I make the shot. now Im set up on the 6 in the side and the 8 in the opposite side. My opponent says I hit the 9 first a guy at the bar says its to close to call. the reff is off at the other table. no one saw the shot but me my opponent and the guy at the bar. So I either make a ruckus over $5 or I just Beat the living snot out of him at next week ends tournament . You know when you make a shot if it was good or not . everything felt good I have no dought in my mind I hit the 2 first. This guy is going down next weekend.

I always give deference to the shooter. As you said, you know when you hit it and watch the shot from behind the cue if the hit is good or not. If the opponent has any doubt, its' up to him to call a ref over before you shoot.

Of course, sometimes it may be too close to call by either interested party. So if there is a good player that observed the shot you may go with his opinion, but I don't believe you have to.

Anyway, you certainly have the right attitude. Practice and good luck next week.

Your correct its not worth getting living snot all over you for five bucks. Practice this week with him in mind and serve up a cold plate of revenge.

Don't forget to down a can of spinach before the match and let us know how you did:cool:
 
If you started the inning shooting at the 2 ball and it looked like a good hit would be questionable then always call the ref to watch before you shoot.

If you were running the table up to the 2 ball then WHAT THE HELL was the CB doing up against the rail on the other end of the table? :)....just saying

When you go to the next tournament take a sack full of egg salad sandwiches that have set out in the sun for a couple of days, and offer one to the guy. He'll eat it, puke all over the table, and the management will throw his ass out.
That will sure teach him a thing or two. :smile:
 
It's on your opponent to call a ref over to watch the hit for close calls before you shoot.

If he tries to call it on you afterwards, it is sometimes used as a move. You don't have to budge if you honestly believe that it was a good hit.

If both sides refuse to come to an accord, then you can offer to flip a coin on the call. I did this in a tournament once and both my opponent and the TD found it a suitable solution to a "He said/He said" situation.

I don't think CB position constitutes running the table I think its making the shots that constitutes running a table. Just sayin

If the CB was where it should be the 9 ball wouldn't even be in the picture...just saying..and this time even typing a little slower
 
you know what popeye im with cuebuddy. right wrong foul no foul who really cares. if the guy you are playing needs the cash that badly then you are being the better man and letting him have it. all the guys saying he needs to have the ref watch the hit are absolutly right but that didnt happen. is it really worth it to possibly get into an arguement and maybe even not be welcome back..... not to me. smile give him ball in hand have a beer after the match and beat the living crap out of him next time you play eachother.
 
In any tournament scenario the shooter has the final say unless a 3rd party is invited to watch the shot. If your opponent did not ask anyone to watch and it's your word against his, then the shooter is always right. Sometimes this can be good, sometimes this can be bad. Just make sure if you're not shooting you call somebody over to watch close hits.

As far as your particular situation goes. You would need at least a half ball hit on the 9 to carom the 2 in the corner. If you had a half ball hit on the 9 it would be extremely obvious that a foul was made. You can also look at the direction that the 9 travelled after the hit. If it kicked toward the long rail it was a good hit. If it banked down toward the other end of the table it was probably a bad hit.
 
Ktrepal85 Yes it went off in the direction of the long rail. but whats done is done now. I know better next time to call the reff over. I will be getin my practice on and eat my spinach for the weekend.

Calling a ref to watch the shot is not his responsibility, it is the opponents. If the opponent allowed him to shoot without calling over a ref and the hit is questionable, the shooter thinks it is good and the opponent thinks it is not, then it is a good hit. Lesson learned for the opponent.

Without going by that rule, which is the rule in just about every league and organization that I know of, you are reinforcing the opponents bad and unsportsmanlike way of going about the game. I personally would have said to him, you had the chance to call over a ref for the hit and chose not to. I saw it as a good hit and in independent 3rd party saw it as a good hit so I am finishing out the rack.

That may be true...but if the OP is the kind of player that is going to give up his inning because the opponent calls a foul...then he should call the ref over. I've seen many matches where the shooter calls the ref over just so there's not a problem after the shot.
 
UPDATE I am beating this guy on a regular basis now. Hes always fussing saying I play sissy pool because I don't bank the 8 . I said alright how bought we bank every ball. Now I got his attention , So he wants to play for a beer again. I agreed and won two games in a row. I said want to play again third times the charm! he said, No I think I need to take a brake. I don't think I will get any flack from him anymore.
