Origins of the box cue

Gina made one for eddie kelly

will prout owns the cue now

this was the first,it was later used by Gus,Barry,Bill Stroud
and many other

Paul Mottey made several for me and took the craft to a
higher level with the music themed
Tim Scruggs made some particularly nice ones

Schon made some Ed Kelly tributes and gave one to Ed himself,
I owned several of these .but I seem to never hold on

Pete Tonkin has gone to an artistic extreme

Bob Owen, the pool hustler who beat his friend like a tom tom, also
has taken the box cue to a high level using far out woods and
wrapless designs that tickle the imagination.

Bob makes box cues with wood instead of ivory and i believe
they are even prettier than the ivory>

Drexler who is the king of originality even made me a box cue,
but i prefer his crazy original ideas to the box cues

It is hard to imagine a cue maker who has not put his
toe into the box cue pond since Ernie introduced the idea back in the 60s

Who built the first one? Szamboti? Black? And by box cue I'm referring to the forearm

Hi, I just saw this post, sorry.

Ernie Gutierrez of Ginacue made the first box cue in history. He made it for Eddie Kelly in 1969. I have owned the cue for 8-10 years now. It is pictured just below the white box cue in my avatar.

I have dozens (and dozens) of box cues. Several by Ginacue, including the second box cue ever made as well. Ernie restored the second one for me in 2012. It is also with provenance.

I have several Szamboti box cues, 15-20 by Bill Stroud, the only one ever made by David Kersenbrock, several by Bill Schick (including 3 ivory handled ones), the only Searing box cue ( my player), a Black box cue, several Mottey's, Tonkin, McDaniel, Gilbert, Schon (including Dallas West's box cue with his name engraved in buttsleeve), etc......

Yep, I love'em........and I still buy them, so if someone has a great one just let me know.
