Need a Book Suggestion

Sup guys,

I'm looking for a book/dvd on position play/speed or ball control. I'm really trying to work on this aspect of my game because it is, without a doubt, my weakness in pool. I'm now motivated again and don't want to waste a second.

So guys, which book or dvd would help me most in this case?

I've got Darren Appleton's Perfect Practice - I have done the L drill and various other drills. I'd prefer a book that I could take with me when practicing though - but if a DVD is best then I will certainly go that route instead.

Let's see what everybody says!

Bingo Bongo Bert

Bert Kinister has a couple of speed control drills.

Start with a spread of say 8 balls along the head string evenly spaced. Starting at one side, using each ball as a cb, stroke each ball progressively further toward the foot rail. If not successful...start over. If successful, add more balls to the line up.

Or...same set up...but in reverse: first ball as close as possible to end rail, then progressively closer to head string.

Or...same set up, but lag the first ball up and back closest to head rail, each successive ball a little further away from head rail.

Or... do same thing,/idea using cb to hit ob's in the lineup..

Or...starting at the mouth of the side pocket, see how many small strokes of the ball you can take before pocketing the ball in the other side pocket.

Draw straight back one, two, 3 diamonds etc.

Roll straight forward one, two 3 diamonds etc.

Make up your own..:wink::wink:

Zero-X Pattern Play

I like Zero-X too... I also liked Bob Hennings Pro Pool for pattern play. He has a DVD & a book too.

The L Drill, the Circle Drill & the Long String drill will help too. You need to practice these drills until you can do them successfully

Good Luck

The Key in My opinion

I think that drills or exercises are great but the best thing in my opinion is to learn how to aim and make shots with all types of English.

This way you learn the English applications and when you don't get shape like you want to you try out all the possibilities with Spin to see if you can.

I think this practical application teaches you more than a drill can. You play some 9 ball Ghost and rethink and reshoot positions you don't get shape well with.

Cue ball distance control is the most important. I see many people under or over run their position more than anything.

Bert Kinister volume 1,2,3 are best for business IMO. He teaches way to play position through center of table most of times because then you can eliminate scratches.. I found one his later tapes just got out for free from youtube, There is same(similar) shots he demonstrates. His 60 minute workout have 27 shots(volume 1) and volume 2 and 3 he talk(and shows) how to put those shots together as game.
I recommend his videos always because those 3 videos put my game totally new level back in days of 90s.

link to that newer freebie from youtube. :)

I also think zero-x pattern play is a great dvd and ebook that would address this area of your game.

Insanity drill for position play without using the rails.

Grady has a good video on banks and kicks that can be very
Helpfull in position play off the rails.

Dr. Dave has great info on collision induced english, rail
Induced english, and tangent lines.

You have to know all of the above and speed control to
play great position:wink:

Good luck! Remember to ptactice correctly.Randy G says 20 minutes
a session.

I don't think any book or video will teach you how to play speed or control the ball around the table. They may show you the "best" line to go at a ball for shape, but not HOW you hit it to get it there, speed control is 100% practice. You may get drills on how to learn speed control but you can do that on your own simply. Just line up the shots you messed up and shoot them till you get it right.

And of course all that goes out the window soon as you move to a different table LOL, or put accidental spin on the ball, or get nervous and hold up your stoke. Or it's humid. Or dry. Or it's a Tuesday.
Pool is a tough game :)

I like the suggestions so far - I got the Zero X videos and watched through them. I'm not looking to learn anything like how to hit a ball because I "know" all of this stuff conceptually and intellectually. I'm really just looking for new drills or positions to set up to practice speed and spin control.

Again, I know how spin and draw and follow, etc. affect a ball off a rail or multiple rails or whatever but I do not have the speed control to do everything consistently.

All of that, including drills, is included with Tor's videos.

Take a look at Bullseye Billiards.

the way I practiced with Bob Hennings book & DVD was this.

I had the shot laid out, with the traffic. I practiced the shot as shown, then I started stopping my cue ball in 3-4 different locations along the cue ball's dictated path.

That helped with my speed control * showed me that shots always have different ways to be done.

Good Luck...
