Break shafts with slim tapers?

So I was working on my break shot for 8ball last night and found that I like the 314 for breaking more than I do my breaker... It feels harder to hit the CB head on with the thick 14mm+ break shaft than it is with normal 12,75 shaft.
This got me thinking, what size the best breakers are and what kind of taper they have? I'd love to find some nice breaker around 12,75 with a relatively long taper, any suggestions? I'll be getting a dedicated break cue sometime later this year, maybe make a wish to mrs. santa wink for one, so i would like to know what do you recommend for those specs :wink:
Been looking in to OB rift, Mezz Power Breaks and BK 2 & 3, but i cant find pictures close enough to see the taper or diameters of them even. Help me out if you will, I'd appreciate any input you can provide. Personal hands on reviews on those stated or other viable would be superb.

I'll turn my old HXT to a breaker for now and see what that feels like and how long it lasts the abuse it is going to suffer with a Samsara on it

Break Cue Summary

To cut straight to the point. Get yourself one of these and use it until
it feels like an extension of your wrist. Seriously, I have tried dozens of
break cues/break shafts ect and this is the one you want imo.

I have a mezz pbp with h shaft and I find it a bit fat. Prefer my friends bk2 shaft diameter and taper

Quite the unusual feeling you have there.

The thinnest break cue I've ever used was the Poison break cue, it felt so tiny compared to my BK3.

I had Schmelke make me a break cue with a purpleheart shaft. It is 12.75 mm with Extended Pro Taper and a Samsara tip. Works great for me, and my APA team mates like to use it as well.

If you play with a smaller playing cue, it would only make sense to break with a cue of similar diameter, length, and weight.

Dave, This makes a lot of sense. There is something to say about comfort level and familiarity when breaking.

I've never understood why so many people want a super lightweight or extremely heavy break cue. We can argue physics all day, but what really matters is your comfort level with the cue. That's mainly why I break with my playing cue and why I like the idea of having matched cue sets. Shane and Earl are both people have broken with the playing cues, but have also used break cues. I think it's something everyone should experience, before dismissing it.

I play with a Tiger Sniper on a Tiger Ultra X LD shaft. It took me some time to warm up to the idea of breaking with a low deflection shaft, but I'm happy with it and it has yet to show any damage. Even before then, I broke and jumped with my playing cue, which had a pro tapered straight grain maple shaft and melamine ferrule.

What you experienced is the benefit of low cue ball squirt (low deflection) on the break.

The harder you hit a shot, the easier it is to miss the center of the cue ball, resulting in unexpected cue ball squirt. With an LD break cue, you won't get nearly as much squirt and you'll hit the pack square more often. An LD break cue is what you need. There are a few good ones out there, but of course I like the OB Rift. I am a little biased though, lol!

check out the OB rift control. that's what i've been using and i love it. it's only like 13 mm...took me a bit to get used to coming from a larger diameter break shaft, but i love it now. still gives me plenty of power.

The problem with large diameter tip ends is that accidentally hitting left of CCB will deflect the CB right, and vice versa, unless your bridge is around 7-8 inches (very short). Assuming, of course, that alignment is correct.

With the low deflection cues, the opposite problem can occur, such that a bridge length of 14+ inches is necessary to offset accidental off center hitting of the CB.

A short bridge helps assure accurate CB striking, but may reduce power. So a player ought to consider a bridge length where they get a good power v accuracy pay off, and then consider using a cue with a pivot point at that length, so when they do hit off center, the CB line will be accurate, albeit with the loss of some power and CB control.

I would venture to say that a smaller diameter cue tip might do that to a worse degree.
A dime radius doing that worse than a nickel radius & so on.

There is a myriad of things to go wrong with an off-hit cue ball on the break stroke. The tip, the the tip radius, the end mass weight, shaft column strength, deflection input, speed, spin & so on.

Isn't this a great game..?

Very soon, we will have some super-dooper input for off hits, just as soon as we can get it developed, completed & compiled.
