I'm not trying to bash Neils, he's one of my favorite players, I'm just trying to show how dumb it is to praise a WPA event and overlook the US Open because the field is not as strong. If the US Open is so easy with its rack your own, winner breaks, race to 11, then surely these WPA world Champs should've won 1 by now besides Darren and Mika, I'm not counting people from a decade ago.
The majors like US Open, All Japan, China Open are below World Championship (ie. W9B, W10B, W8B) for number of reasons
1) very tough qualifiers and almost no dead money. Not an recreational player or part time player can play in main draw of 128 by paying fee. You first have to win qualifiers to play into main draw of 128. In majors , most times you just have to pay the entry fee and you can play main draw
2) all best players in world want to play so it brings together best field. Very easy to factually prove this, just look at how many top world class players there are in WC compared to majors and WC wins hands down. While the majors do attract number of world class players it does not attract as many a world championship like this
3) almost all countries send their top players so almost whole world is represented .
4) this is only event most players who want to prove they are best want to win.
U.S. Open is a major like All Japan, China Open but it is below World Championship . Period .
Anyone who has won World Championship need not prove themselves by winning a major like US Open , All Japan , China Open.
But the reverse is true- anyone who has won major still has to win WC (eg. Raymond Faraon, Lee Van, Chang Yu Lung, Albin, SVB, Yang, Chris Meiling, Corey Deuel, Rodney)
If The kid in Philippines who aspires to be best and can only save and travel to play 1 event , he will play WC, it is that simple . Before 1990s, the premier top 9 ball event would be US Open so can say it was defacto World Championship then as there were no W9B then. But not now.
I hope you're not comparing the US Open to the Mosconi Cup.
It takes a lot more talent to win an Open.
The Mosconi Cup is a side show, not a premier event....the game is in worse shape than
I thought if a performance in this show merits the same respect as any major.
Yes MC is great entertainment like Donald Trump of pool so clearly is way below US open as benchmark of players capability
Also it is team event and should not be confused with individual events
