How many cues do you carry around?

How many cues do you carry around and why? I was recently evaluating what comes with me when I play and I got to wondering just why it is that I would carry what I carry. I have a great custom case that I got from Gil Castillo a couple of years ago but I really can't justify all the room. I mean really, why would anyone need to carry around four cues and two shafts for each? So I pared back a bit. I went to a 2 X 3 (Ultimate Rugged), for my player, a shaft and the back up, and my breaker, a few cubes of chalk, a shaper, a piece of leather, a tip tool (Shark Pup), my bridge device, a pen, a small towel, and some loose change. At times that almost seems like more than I really need. I know guys and girls that carry their 4X8 and keep it full all the time and they might strap another shaft to their case.
So, how many cues and how much stuff do you carry around and why?

I carry a 3x5 instroke with my player with 2 shafts, my breaker, and my jumper, Tiger paw cue holder, towel, bridge adapter, tip tool, leather, chalk, pocket marker, pens, $1.00 in quarters, and ibuprofen . I leave 2 players with 5 shafts, and another breaker at home.

4x8 Butterfly with my player, my break, and some random cue I won like a year ago that I was too lazy to take out. Along wit tip tool, couple good pieces of chalk, and 4 diff green and blue scruff pads.

"How many cues do you carry around?"

Two.
One breaker and one player.
Sometimes if I'm doing something important I take another shaft for the player
but usually it's just those two.

My player with 3 shafts (Mezz WX900, OB-2, SS360/2), break cue with 1 shaft, and 2 jump cues with 1 shaft each.

It's Easy To Overdo It.......

I started with a George case...........1x2.
That turned into a Instroke 2x4 after I got a break cue.

But after I bought a pretty awesome Mottey, I needed a 3x7.
Break cue.....Runde Schon....& my 1st ivory joint cue (Mottey w/ 3 shafts).

After I fell in love with ivory cue joints, I left my Runde Schon at home.
My 3x7 case looked naked and so the Scruggs cue came to fill the void.

Should have stopped there but I always wanted to design a cue from scratch.
So I ordered a special custom design from Mr. Owen......really glad I did......

So my case had room for the cue butts........Mottey, Scruggs & Owen cues but
not my break cue or any extra shafts I have (3 for my Owen & 3 for my Mottey cues).

So a 4x8 seemed perfect & indeed was up until Deanoc announced the 1st Bushka cue project.
Great looking Bushka cue designs are my all time favorite and so I had to get one from Jerry R.

Well, after my cue arrived, it was hard to decide which cue to leave at home because they all played
so amazing......and then I saw Gill Castillo offered a special deal on a custom 6x12 leather case and
that seemed to eliminate the problem as to which cue to leave behind.

I was all set until I spotted one of my dream cue-makers on Cornerstone Cues. Bill had a Prewitt cue
that made my heart skip a beat & my Mottey cue interested Bill so I now own 1- EP & 0- PM cues.
Anyway, my 6x12 case had room for some cues, naturally my first thought & inclination was "time to fill it."

Looked hi & low & couldn't find any cues I liked but I am pretty fussy about cue-makers & cue specs.
So I have a couple more cues underway and that will fill my case......1 EP, 1 TS, 2 BO & 2 JR cues.
I am toying with perhaps trading my EP cue towards a Hercek cue but am undecided becuz of AB96.
If EP doesn't relocate, there won't be any more ivory in EP cues after 7/1/16 due to the pending ban.

So I'm sticking with what I own unless a monster Hercek comes along before next summer and I'd
give up my EP cue for that......Meanwhile, my 6x12 carries four cues, 1 break cue & by next Spring,
after the next 2 customs reach me, the Stinger cue remains at home and my 6x12 case is complete.

Naturally, a simple question arises....Why not just carry the cue you are going to play with that day/nite?
Well, if I still owned a pool table, I'd do that but some things change and you adjust....Ergo, no more table.
So I really do not decide which cue I am going to play with until I lay open my 6x12 case....and since I
only play at pool halls & my 6x12 case is actually smaller in size than my 4x8, that's what I use. So
why own a great collection of cues only to find myself wishing I had brought a different cue that day/nite.
Personally speaking, if that happened only once, it would be too many times as far as I'm concerned.

Since all my cues have basically the same specs which is not by accident, picking which cue to play is a treat.
Right now, my 6x12 case houses 4 cues & before end of Spring, it will become full after my last 2 cues arrive.

4x8 jbcase.
I carry my Mezz break cue, Exceed playing cue.
2 playing shafts, 3 different break shaft, Mezz airdrive jump cue, Mezz extension, a mid cue extension, some tools, gloves and chalk.

3x7

3 butts one player one break cue and one cue for sale , I leave a empty hole open for a shaft, ( I fix cues and someone is always handing me a shaft to fix) and I don't like taking a risk of damaging a customers shaft so the extra big case works great for me.

Rough guess on percentage

50% - One player in a cheap, one cue case i got for free when a member here needed something to ship a cue in

40% - House cues are free and readily available, those tend to be all I need to be happy

10% - Leave my cue in the car and just play with a house cue anyway

I toyed around with your idea a little bit owning cues from different cuemakers until i started playing competitively more frequently and i realized i needed a lil bit more consistently as cue to cue play differently like deflectiin n throw.

So an idea came up , since i have always love mezz shaft but prefer the exclusivity of custom designs, i always sent custom makers a mezz shaft to fit their butt so i can play with any of my custom butt and fit on a mezz shaft, i'm all wired and ready to go without having to adjust too much as performance of a cue is 70% dependent on shaft and 30% butt attributed to the weight and balance.

Why not choose a favourite cuemaker shaft and match it to all your custom butt ?

Just my 2 cents :)

3 x 4 case, main player(1 shaft), back up player(1 shaft),
break cue(1 shaft), and the last shaft in the case is for
a jump cue and the butt of the jump cue is in one of the
case pockets.

I do something similar to this. All my cues are radial pins and the shafts are interchangeable. The ring work is the same on all my shafts.

The butts that I own are ALL very different from one another in terms of balance point. They also differ in wrap vs wrapless as my hands tend to sweat and my grip slips in very hot conditions.

I can not control the air condition going out at the pool room. I can not control the room owner changing the cloth to mudd cloth vs. 760 simonis cloth. I can not control if the tournament uses brunswick or diamond tables. I can not control tight pockets vs. sloppy.

I have been desperately trying to narrow my equipment down to one cue! But, i notice that one cue set up works better for one set of conditions and another set up works better for a completely opposite set of conditions. For me, this is the case! If only pool had standardized the equipment and materials??? You are always guessing about fast cloth, short banking rubber cushions, pocket facings, pocket shelfs, Ball composition, table lights. & etc. I would love a little consistency! But, It won't happen in my life time. Pretty hard to compete at the local pool room and major tournaments with them having polar opposite playing conditions!
