Tonight with host Mark Cantrill, we get an update from Barry Behrman, founder of the 40 year old U.S. Open 9ball tournament, about the status of things to come.

The added money is all accounted for, the player field is all but full, Virginia avoided a direct hurricane hit, and Pat Fleming has taken on the extra responsibility of being the " prize money czar".....but will everything go as peachy as planned??

Typical interview with Barry. Mark tried to ask a simple question: How are the free entries for previous champions being handled - are they paid for by someone else or are are they simply free and so that money doesn't go into the prize pool? Barry goes on a rambling speech about how the field is full and it's going to be a great event blah blah blah. Sounds like he's BS-ing and obfuscating and trying to avoid the question.

But we all know that from the beginning the answer to Mark's question has been this: "Now that Pat Fleming has taken charge of the added funds of $75,000.00 as well as $113,000.00 in entry fees, this comes to $188,000.00..." If 128 players are in the event, and there are about 15 former champions, $128,000 - $15,000 = $113,000. So the entries from the former champions are simply free, and their entry fees will not be in the prize pool. Presumably some of them will not come to play, and paying players will take their place, and therefore the entries might be even higher than $113,000.

Look, that's fine. No problem. Totally understandable way to do things. But Mark tries to pin him down and eventually Barry says he is paying the entry fees. WTF? Did he just now decide that? Is he lying? Does he not understand what's happening? Why does the official press release say something different? Why didn't he just simply and clearly answer the question? Is BS-ing just so much of a habit that even when he doesn't need to do it he does it anyway?

I think free entries for past champions is a fine thing...
...and they don't have to be paid by anybody is also fine...
But I agree with you, BR, why can't he just say it?

I didn't like Yukio and Chow having to play their way through the qualifiers in the
world nine-ball championship....past champions should be honored, just like the
Masters does in the PGA.

Mark and I had this EXACT conversation yesterday.
Seems like if the prize pool doesn't add up to anything over 188k , then the past champion entry fees mean nothing...but I haven't done the math.

I listened and to be honest I still don't know if BB is paying the previous entries or not. He said that he was adding the $15k in entries for past Champions to the added money and that he was adding $60k plus the $15k to make the $75k added. So, is he Adding $75k or $60k? and is he paying entry fees or not? Again I am still not sure.

"Who's on 1st" ?? ...........

Here we go again. For 40 years Barry has championed a tournament that has been one of American pool highlights. Champions win, players come back year after year, and it's a great event. A great event in times when it is almost impossible to raise sponsorship money.

Most of the complainers couldn't put on a successful tournament of any kind but sure know how to pick one apart. If you think it is important enough to complain, then why don't you kick in $500 or $1000 to support a game we all love?

I would like to thank all the folks who have stepped up help Barry with the organizing, the operating, and the fiscal responsibilities of this years tournament.

We all understand that despite Pat's heroic efforts Barry will still find a way to screw this up.

A very profound observation.
