Jay Helfert resigned as Tourney Director at the US Open

Are we really here talking about Allen Hopkins being "owed" something from the pool world?

The guy that's made more off pool then any living human.
Runs an event with 1000 players, takes in 75k in entries, and the winner gets 5k?
Not to mention all the other events with the same payout structure.

Is this the same Allen that runs 1 event a year and makes more money off of it then the best players in the world make playing 12 full months?

This is that Allen, correct? He's owed something from the pool community? This is a crying shame. I'm so sorry you made travel plans and the other screwed up promoter this country has forgot to put you on the list, maybe he should of reimbursed you and had the tournament run without some drama for ONCE.

Do us all a favor and quit crying and come next April I'm sure you will make another 100k or more for a weekend of work as the pool players can't help but give it to you. They have no choice of anything else to play.

You should be ashamed

Completely unfair. First what Allen makes in profit isn't anyone's business but his own.

The SBE is one of the very few bright and consistent events in pool.

No one, NO ONE is forced to show up. Repeat NO ONE is forced to show up. Yet people come in from all over the world to play and attend the expo.

Maybe Allen didn't do what a player should normally do as to checking the list and so on but it's not right to say that this is a totally black and white situation. Barry screwed it up and put Jay into a brutal position.

As for shit happening? Stevie Moore flew to China to play in a WPA event and they left him off the chart. He ended up having to play an extra match just to "qualify" to get into the event after dealing with a bunch of bureaucratic BS to even get that chance.

I think Jay did the right thing. Maybe Allen should have walked but then again Barry should have handled it without all the drama.

The truth is this situation is just another installment in the Barry Behrman legacy of destroying the US Open. I casually know all three people involved and I believe Allen Hopkins when he says he was invited by Barry even though Barry failed to put his name on the list to reserve a spot.

Jay has been through a ton of crap dealing with Barry in the past and was attempting to give it one more chance in order to pull the tournament out of the gutter. Jay's decision was a no-brainer as he has a great reputation and it would put his credibility on the line if he allows anyone to start manipulating the tournament list and draw.

The whole problem falls on Barry who has for the last 15 years or so has continually worked toward destroying this event. With all his personal issues constantly interfering with the proper running of the event. The event had consistently grown for many years while the venues kept getting better and better but during that time the event was actually managed by another man who managed the set up and operation extremely well. But there was some issue with Barry and the manager left.

At this point Barry and family ran the event with Barry at the helm as he began to sink the ship. Barry's personal issues conflicted with the event including the fact he was incarcerated and the rumor was the judge gave him a furlough to hold the event one year to benefit the City of Chesapeake. And then there were issues with paying the bills with the City for the convention center.

Since leaving the convention center the event has been steadily going down hill with the seating arrangements being from very poor to just plain dangerous. One location was badly in violation of the fire codes and should have been closed down. I have been really surprised there hasn't been any lawsuits regarding the falls around the bleachers. The access and safety features don't come close to being proper.

Did you not notice this was a day after the tournament chart had been drawn and posted. I don't think Allen did anything wrong himself but with this type of situation why not let a top player just wait until, the bracket is drawn and then let him pick a spot with a soft field and buy into that spot. If this had come up before the bracket was drawn it would have been ok for someone to sell or bow out and let another player in their spot but once the bracket is drawn, it's a done deal.

Given allen and jays' posts how does anyone in their right minds justify what allen or barry did acceptable. Listen, if pro pool is going to continue to allow this or anything like this, you deserve not to get paid, you deserve to get cheated, you get what you put in.

I believe it was an honest mistake by BB that Allen's name was not on the players' list. He compounded that honest mistake by making a bad executive decision, which broke the camel's back and resulted in Jay walking.

As someone mentioned, Allen is an innocent bystander. He was guaranteed and confirmed his spot with the owner of the US Open. He incurred lots of expenses to get there to do his job, which was to compete. I can't blame him on someone else's mistake. If I were in his shoes, I would play too.

And what about the player that was asked to withdraw and let Mr. Hopkins take his place? He too worked hard to get there most likely, paid his dues and was in the draw. It's the players responsibility to make sure they are in the draw and in the tournament. Mr. Hopkins had every opportunity to just say NO, it's not ethical for me to ask another player to forgive his spot for me. HOF or Not its wrong in every aspect.
