Hello Jen (and Spartan too)
The nickname of Karl Boyes is GWAPO and it is a Tagalog word meaning HANDSOME. Knowing Karl then I would have bet that he had chosen the name himself.

I like to think that GWAPO stands for
GOT WAYS of ALIENATING and PISSINGOFF OPPONENTS.
He is a living legend in his Blackpool hometown and had a massive hand in organising last year's post match Mosconi celebrations. He invited a few friends, he invited his Euro team mates, then he invited the crowd at the final to come. But only 300 came.

LOL like the acronym
I believe he spells it Guapo which is Spanish for Handsome
Tagalog Gwapo has same meaning which is derivative of Guapo
:D

Are you sure his nickname is El Guapo and not Del Taco?

How interesting! Actually, Karl is very handsome. Easy on the eyes!

When you're in Italy, the word is "GUAPO"....
....originally it meant 'handsome and brave'...
....then it morphed to 'tough guy'....
...associated with mob types....
....in North American English....it morphed to "WOP"

Freddy the Beard and I had this argument a while back....
....his friends backed me up with emails to him.
rest in peace, Freddy

someone said "Boyes George" I knew that couldn't be true :embarrassed2:

Funny.

Actually, I was reading somewhere today that Karl has a daughter and her name is Georgie J. Boyes.

I'm not a fan of Karl by any means but he sure can play some pool.

Wasn't WOP an older derogatory term for Italian immigrants. Slang for Without papers? I've never heard wop used as anything but an insult.

That's what Freddy thought....but I made him a believer.
...the "without papers" explanation is what is known as 'folk etymology'...
.....a likely story that is sorta believable...

By the way....Karl's nickname Gwapo might very well be faithful to the 'tough guy'
connotation of the Italian version....he's got scar tissue on his left eyebrow....
....looks like Karl can walk the walk.
