"Ball in hand, legal shots only"

A few key words seem to be missing from this phrase.. what does it mean?

Thanks!

I would ask whoever is running that particular 'house'..... ;)

That makes a lot of sense, appreciate the input. I wonder if anyone at AZBilliards might know what it means?

Mostly clueless eh........ ;)

Its a vague sign. Has no special meaning unless the proprietor of the place it is hanging in wants it to mean something. But a bunch of strangers guessing at what it means is always better than asking the owner or manager.

It means, you and your opponent must agree on what is " a legal shot" and what is not before playing.

Maybe it is actually 2 very vague rules in a poorly written way.

  • Ball in hand - for fouls only. This could be behind the head string or anywhere on the table.
  • Ball in hand - this is a progressive place that says anytime you shoot you get ball in hand. Not sure if this would be in the kitchen or anywhere though.
  • Legal shots only - you can't scoop or perform any other shoot not considered legal by the WPA and/or his lawyers.

It sounds to me like the first step into the Hades of 'bar rules'...

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!!

It clearly means different things to different people. To me it means, "Find a pool hall and don't play here."

Well, I thought something so vague would likely be some colloquial jargon - guess not.

I'm betting Michael4 is right and I'd find out as I play. If it was less ambiguous it would clearly be less open to interpretation...

In Texas, so not likely to be a gun prohibition.

Perhaps, as many unusual rules, it is based on a problem - somebody was trying to declare that when you had ball in hand, illegal shots were permissible (imaginations gone wild). :grinning-moose:
