Title says it all - when you're jumping a ball what stroke do you tend to use?

Depends on how close the cb is to the ob I have to jump over. If I need a lot of elevation right away, I use the dart stroke.

any good player will use both depending on the demands of the shot. Can a mod please delete this horrible poll.

your poll makes no sense.

hence the reason there's 74 view and 7 votes.

Yup. Has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it's only been for just short of two hours.

Back under your rock Randal. Back to your rock.

That's not fair and it definitely shouldn't be deleted.

I almost never see pros use a dart stroke, but I see lots of league players using it. I think that's because it's easier to get over the ball with a dart stroke but harder to aim with it.

For example, there were how many jumps during the Mosconi Cup, about 10? And I don't think a single one used a dart stroke. That doesn't sound like using them both but for different situations. For whatever reason - I think because of the difficulty in aiming - almost no pros use a dart stroke.

It's easier to aim with a dart stroke. Pros do use them. Depends on how they feel.

I also use a dart stroke when I have less than a few inches and/or a whole ball to get over. But I'm not talking about people like you and me. I've watched a lot of pro pool and in recent years my estimate is that only a couple single-digit percent of the jump shots I've seen are dart stroke. For whatever reason, pros massively overwhelmingly prefer regular stroke over dart stroke. Given the extra contortion you have to do with your body to use a regular stroke, there must be a good reason - something more than just what they're feeling - and I think it's that it's easier to get your head lined up in the familiar way.

Both are necessary. But the requirement to use a dart stroke doesn't come up nearly as often as a regular jump. What do you guys think, maybe 1 out of 10 jumps shots gets the dart stroke?

IMO, the limitations of the dart stroke frequently make the kick a better option.....or else the percentage may be higher.

Hmm.. Interesting use of the word "requirement" because I don't think there is a requirement for using a dart stroke opposed to a regular jump stroke unless we're talking 9-footers and the CB is in the middle of the table.

My preference is to use the dart stroke over a regular jump stroke. Jacoby makes it super easy to use a dart stroke with the indent/grip they make in the butt of the jump cue.

The main reason a player would prefer the underhand stroke is familiar control. The main reason a dart stroke is used is to be able to see down the cue with the whole shot in view like one would do for a normal shot.

The dart stroke also makes it more comfortable to get elevation when the angle needs to be higher.

I agree with others that the regular stroke is better/more familiar for aiming and stroking, and the dart stroke is mostly for steeper jumps. I'll usually kick before using a dart stroke unless it's a short hanger with automatic shape.

20-25 years ago when jump cues weren't so common we unscrewed and used our shafts to jump, always with a dart stroke of course.

Normal stroke seems way more consistent for me, at any distance. Never seen any pros use the dart style :O

Here is an example of a Dart Stroke in a professional competition. As many others have said, the use of the dart stroke depends on the shot, and the preference of the shooter.

It seems to me on this example that a dart stroke was not necessary on this layout, but of course, I have never missed a shot sitting on the rail either.
