Get rid of jump cues for Mosconi Cup

Hohmann has world titles in both. Anyone else you know that can lay claim to that?

9 ball isn't used to determine who the world's best player is, either. It's used to determine the world's best 9 ball player.

It's irrelevant to the discussion. If jump cues were NEEDED in 14.1 then professional players would use them in 14.1.

In modern 9 ball jump shots are needed so jump cues exist and are used.

And you can bet the farm they are going to be allowed in the Mosconi Cup forever.

For the purpose of talking to the press no professional player would ever claim the number one spot if they are not number one on the WPA ranking list.

To a man they all defer to the WPA list to determine who the NUMBER ONE player on earth is. Some may talk about the money list and that's a valid point but the #1 player is the one who is #1 on the WPA's list.

Well I disagree thiers been many yrs where the number one was considerd a paper champion surely as connected as you are with players you know that to be true
Now that we have more points events broad side the rankings will carry more weight than and yrs past , but you being a Shane fan has scoffed at the fact he has no world titles
Do you wear flip flops ?

Yes that's a good bet but I would never confuse pool players as the ones who will fight for the good of the game they follow the money period

Huh?

Wow this thread is truly going in crazy directions.

I wear Birkenstocks. They are properly called sandals.

Happy New Year everyone. Hope you get a good jump shot into the new year!!!!

Yes, Happy New Year to all, and to all a good night!

Amongst the fireworks will be the smoke from my jump cue burning... burn, you worthless POS. :)

The smartest promoter for cue sports is Barry Hearn... While lots of you think you are smarter than Barton I can guarantee that while you may or not be smarter than John,( I am betting not based on bodies of work), you are not smarter than Barry... Regardless of what you make in other industries and how many posts you post here trying to make opinion as fact your opinion is not relevant outside of AZ and likely not even here...... Jump cues are and will be legal again next year... Kick your feet and throw a tantrum. post a book of posts on the thread but that is the way it is...

Sorry if it hurts anyone's feelings but Barry's opinion trumps your whole little brain trust.....

In the past JB you have said Shane's the best player , now it's who ever is the WPA number 1 which is it

First I didn't say the number one player is the best player. I also never said shane is the best. ..I said no breathing human is barred from playing him a race to 100 and there was no line ready to play him.

Secondly happy new year

I'm not attacking you , just your opinion , your truley over valuing your worth to the industry if you were to close up shop pool would carry on just the same
The only fact you have stated that has any real merit is ,, jump cues are allowed
Everything else is purely opinion and has no more value than any other poster

1

To be fair, I think a post in which a person supports their opinions with well reasoned arguments has more value than a post in which the person offers no such support to their opinions. I mean, obviously there is such a thing as "making a good case", and not doing that. (No pun intended towards any pool case makers here lol).

I think it would sound a bit silly to claim that JB doesn't support his positions, or that his arguments are invalid or illogical. So I'd say based on that his posts have added value over some posters. Honestly, and no offense John, I don't think his experience in the industry adds nearly as much value as his well reasoned supporting arguments. Unless of course we start a conversation about case making, or how to succeed in the pool industry, or how to jump a ball or build a jump cue, or any other topic where John has obvious expertise.

I'm not shocked ,, So let me help you out ,, good balls ,cloth , rails ect,, just eliminate imperfections that cause misses
Since pool evolved from the caveman era into the era of modern pool , 14-1 , 8 and 9 ball
The only change to pool that dramaticly alters the way balls are pocketed is the jump
stick
It's really not that hard to see that is it ?

Well, it is hard to see it if I take reality into account. Otherwise I suppose it is pretty easy to see it your way.

You seriously don't think Simonis cloth is a game changer? Worsted cloth compared to the old school shag carpet has nothing to do with "imperfections that cause misses". Where did you come up with that? It is radically easier to move the cue ball around the table. You never heard all the people saying "now, you don't need a stroke anymore".

If you choose to ignore this significant change in pool, well I can't help you there.

Really??? Lets take a logical discussion and make it silly. JB tried with the non-relevant chalk pivot. Why don't we make a 3 second shot clock and you have to hold your breath until your turn is over?

The title of the thread reads: Get rid of jump cues for Mosconi Cup. Let's try and stick to somewhat around the the original topic. Not that I'm a mod, industry wheel or greater power but if you want to get silly then I suggest you start a new thread.

Nick, some people in this thread understand the chalk analogy. Analogies can be tricky...not everyone gets them.

Curious, what do you see as the fundamental difference between jump cues, bridges, and extensions? They all seem to fit the description of "a tool or device designed to facilitate the execution of specific types of shots".

Really, the chalk example and everything in the post you quoted are quite logical. Maybe you meant something else when you used the word "logical".

I guess you missed the point of the post. Typical.

Golf used to be played with 2 clubs. Then 3. Now it's 13. The point of the post was that there isn't a shot specific club in a golf bag. If I want to hit the ball 150 yards, I do not have to use an 8 or 9 iron. I could choke up on a 4, and bump and run the 150 yards. Golf is a three dimensional sport, and the ball was always supposed to go in the air. There is not one shot specific club in the bag. A putter can be used on the fairway, or to knock the ball out of the rough. I have yet to see a jump cue used in the game of pool for anything other than a jump shot.

If you haven't seen it, it must not exist. Is that your contention? I have on several occasions seen a jump cue used as a short stick in a crappy bar with an obstruction when they don't have a shorty cue present. In golf, the driver is pretty much used for one thing...driving the ball. Kind of exactly like my break cue, which is used for breaking. But wait...sometimes I do full cue jumps with my break cue. So there's that. Who uses a putter on the fairway? For what possible purpose? I mean, I've never seen the putter used for anything except putting. So therefore it is impossible that it has ever been used for anything else.

I've ran a rack of pool with the rubber bumper on the back of a house cue. I wouldn't advocate it as the best method to run balls off. When the first major tournament in pool is won by a player using a phenolic tip, I will take back my statement.

Why are you focusing on the elite? I thought it was the league players that were important to you. I almost lost a match to an APA 6 who shot full time with a phenolic cue. Tonight just screwing around, I broke and ran a rack of 10 ball with my BK3. Actually, that cue plays pretty good. Brown phenolic tip. Plays better than many cues I've tried. I happen to prefer a leather tip, but it wouldn't be impossible to play with phenolic.

Are you and JB twins separated at birth?

Nope. But I would guess it is the frequent use of logic and reason that may make it appear that way to you. Those logic guys...they really stand out...

This from the guy that claims the centre of a basketball is bigger than the centre of a golf ball. Genius....you are not.

Circumference and diameter are NOT the centre :)

You actually believe I said that. I can tell. You are not kidding. What is really hard to believe is that I thoroughly explained your misunderstanding the first time. *YOU* are the only person that mentioned the center of *any* ball. I quite clearly stated that I was talking about the target for your tip on the surface of the ball. Let me make it a bit simpler for you. Take out one of your many jump cues. Now, place a BB on the bed of a pool table. Beside the BB place a basketball. Using a freehand bridge, and a minimum stroke length of 3 inches, I want you 10 hit the BB on the right side. Anywhere on the right side. Meaning the entire right hemisphere of the ball, as you look at it. Now, you have the same challenge with the basketball. Which is easier?

I never claimed to be a genius. My IQ was only tested at 156...I'm pretty sure the genius standard is higher than that.

However, I can offer some friendly advice: generally when insulting the intelligence of another person, it is a good idea to make sure you know what you are talking about, you don't hilariously and completely misquote them, and generally present yourself as an astonishingly...limited...intellect. I'm not really smart enough to know if this applies to you, but it seems like good advice.

I guess you missed his post that I responded to. John brought up money and contributions to society. Your idol was the one that stooped to bringing his financial superiority into play.

Um, no. He brought up the fact that his small business, which you insulted and for some bizarre reason compared it to the industry you work in, still contributes value to society. He was in no way promoting any superiority, although it is somewhat ironic that you specifically felt the need to point out the superiority of your industry over his.

Shawn, for real, you have serious difficulty with logic and reasoning. Lots of people do. Not all of them make a big show if it though. I mean, if I was a one legged man, I'm not so sure I'd be barking out soccer challenges to people. Maybe if I wan't *aware* that I only had one leg...that could make sense. But wait, nah...I would do that either.

Shawn, seriously...just think about it for a bit. You are NOT GOOD at logic. You're just not. I bet there are things you are good at. Heck, you might be a great guy. But you are WAY WAY out of your depth here. It's a bit sad that you haven't realized that yet. I guess it would be even sadder, though, if you have realized it but plod on anyway. I genuinely would be happy to help you understand this better. Perhaps PM's would be more appropriate for that. Let me know if you'd like to sharpen up on that. I'm not joking...I will seriously help you.

Most truly smart people realize that they speak for one seven-billionth of the population - that being themselves.

Nah. Smart or not, I speak for myself. Nothing in this post would indicate otherwise. If you for some reason assume otherwise, you are mistaken. A possible source of your confusion might be a lack of understanding of the distinction between concrete and abstract statements. For example, if I say that 10 is the best number, I'm certainly speaking for myself. It is possible many others feel the same, in which case while I am not speaking for them intentionally, I may be stating their beliefs. On the other hand, if I say 5 plus 5 is 10, then I am indeed speaking for every living person, everyone who has ever lived, and everyone who ever will live. Whether or not they are aware of this, agree, or anything else...this is the fact.

You and John make the mistake of thinking you speak for everyone except the poster you're addressing.

Nah. Your wrong. See above.

And I really don't think that JB's logical argument that chalk, vulcanized rubber and diamonds on the rail equate in any way to a 40" cue specifically made for jumping holds any water at all.

Ok. You don't have to. See above. Your agreement, awareness, or understanding (thank God), are not in the least necessary for a logical argument to be logical.

Pool CAN be played without the jump cue. It has been up until the 80s.

Ahh...sure. Of course. So what? Pool can be played without chalk, rubber, or diamonds on the rails. It would be different for sure. But who cares? Are you somehow of the belief that someone claimed that the jump cue is *necessary* to pool?

So. the argument is logically invalid.

LMAO...oh yeah? Is that how it works? Lol. You clearly have no clue whatsoever what the argument even *is*. If you want to know, just ask.

You've argued that the centre of a snooker ball is smaller than the centre of a pool ball.

You, and only you, have said this. Now its been 3 or 4 times. I've corrected you twice now. How about you quote the post where I said anything even close to this. You are very mistaken. I never said what you say I did.

Actually, their diameters and circumference are different. Their centres are the exact same size. Suppose I asked you to imagine a target spot or smaller circle, roughly the size of a cue tip. I then place that target on a basketball, and also on the moon. Which target is easier to hit? Answer - the targets are the same size. So it's irrelevant how big the frame for the target is.

Nah. You have misunderstood. You're thinking about it wrong. In order to make the cue ball do something, what matters is the *relative location* that I hit the ball. In other words, what matters is where, relative to the 3 dimensional center of the ball, I hit it. For example, to hit a draw shot, a really lively draw shot, I need to hit the ball below center. For the sake of argument, lets say that I must hit the ball in a range that is a certain distance from the center. Pretty much anywhere within that range will work. So let's just say that to get lively draw, I must hit the cue ball 3/4" below center. Obviously if I strike the ball 1.5" too high, I won't be getting much draw. I will be well above center. Now same example, this time with a basketball sized cue ball. Now the distance I need to strike is, I don't know, lets say 5 inches below center. Now if I hit it the same 1.5" too high, I am still well below center, and will still get the draw. 1.5" either way when striking a ball that is moon sized is a negligible error. Starting to understand now?

But keep talking down to people, as you clearly seem to know you're one of the "smart people".

It is a shame you feel "talked down to". I suppose one solution would be for me to hide the reality of the situation from you. The other solution would be for you to think a little harder before you say some of the things you say. Your absurd misunderstanding, misquoting, and what appears to be a truly remarkable lack of any logic is what places you in the position to feel "talked down to"

I think the best solution for people like you is for me to simply not talk to you. It is a near guarantee that you will feel talked down to in the future.

So with this post, I will no longer speak to you, Shawn. If you wish to change this, just say so.
