Selling Cues on Ebay

Back when I first started collecting cues, ebay was a treasure chest for buying and selling cues. When I ran an auction, 500 to 1,000 page views were common.

Now I am selling a few cues (Palmer's) and the page views are more like 200. My guess is the novelty is over and the high fees caught up with ebay.

I still think it's a great way to find great stuff, but selling is definitely expensive and it's not the hot spot it once was. Bummer.

Also, the cue market is hurting. Expect to face a harsh reality if you list those cues with no reserve and low opening bid.

There are some new people developing an interest in Palmers and some collectors still looking for certain models, but like the broader market, values are down.

With that said, your cues are some of the best Palmers that have recently been offered and while you may not have seen a flurry of interest or bidding, I think your final bid prices have been on par with the sales I have recorded.

What is interesting is that there has been an uptick in interest in the PM and PB cues as well as some of the entry level cues from the third catalog.

As for eBay selling fees, I would agree that they have become exorbitant. I am reluctant to list big ticket items on eBay not only for that reason but eBay and PayPal not to mention the credit card companies, have rigged the system in favor of the buyer making victims out of honest sellers.

The market is flooded with old cues, that is part of the problem.

I just started a thread about it. If I want something like a Palmer I don't have to wait too long to find one cheap. Very often the price expectations are too high with sellers on Ebay now. If you have a starting bid or buy it now that is too high, people don't even look, so your page views will be low.

It is a buyer's market right now, has been for a while, and will become increasingly so in the coming year or two IMHO.

The generation that owned these cues is getting old and/or dying. Their cues are hitting the market now.

??

99% of the time, I get paid within 24 hours if not immediately and transfers to my bank account take ~3 days.

Interesting. They don't make you wait until the item gets to the buyer and they give you positive feedback? It may just be that I only have about 50 transactions. I can't withdraw or spend it until all of that clears.

If you know how you're able to get paid so quickly, please let me know. I have a good bit I'm waiting to "clear" right now.

That could be. I have completed a substantial number of transactions and had a PayPal account for more than ten years, maybe more than fifteen.

On top of that, younger people coming into the sport don't want anything to do with older cues that don't have LD shafts.

I am sure there are limitations. I don't remember how they work. I have a commercial Paypal account now and have done around a million in transactions in the last four years. My fees are low and there are virtually no delays or anything. If there is a problem they call me usually before I even know there is a problem.

I remember when I started my personal Paypal account years ago there were all kinds of delays and limitations. After I moved to a commercial account and increased the volume of transactions that all changed.

I dig Paypal. They helped me build my business.

I get paid the second they hit send on PayPal button. Nothing from me gets shipped before payment, nothing.

Stuff on Ebay seems to move better than they do on AZB these days. The extra fees you absorb there may be high, but, if an item sells quickly, it may be worth it.

Yep, and if you can sell on both, even better. Some folks that look on AZB would NEVER look on Ebay, and some way with Ebay'ers. And of course, there are folks that look at both !!

I get "paid" too, but I can't access the money until they receive it and leave feedback. It's locked up in my account and says it's "pending". I think it's like Type says, I don't have enough transactions or something. I have 100% positive feedback too.

Yeah, that's weird. The only time I've seen that is when someone uses some weird "paypal" check that must clear first. But I won't send anything until it clears.

I do have over 400 transactions (well I'm sure I'm well over 1500 but not everyone leaves feedback)

Not sure how things worked when I didn't have as much ??

But you can put an LD shaft on anything.

Sure, but it won't have all the "magic" technology in the butt and a big flashy logo on it. :D

Marketing has created brand loyalty and is most effective in the younger crowd. In fact the marketing is targeted at them.

eBay has changed things quite a bit since I did a lot of selling. Years ago you got paid instantly unless you were paid by eCheck, which as noted took days to clear. But a few years back they changed a lot of policies to favor the buyer over the seller. Sellers couldn't even leave negative buyer feedback anymore until PayPal completed an investigation in favor of the seller, but buyers still could. I seem to recall one of the changes being around whether the payment was released immediately or not depended on the seller's reputation, so that's likely the issue.
