Selling Cues on Ebay

I find older gems on ebay all the time. Conversion candidates ect.

The for sale section here is just an endless stream of bumps, mostly dealers who's prices are way out of line. I'll look once in awhile, rarely see anything priced to sell.

When I sell and it gets paid, it goes to my Paypal and I can withdraw it or use it. Withdrawals take a few days.

Yes, selling fees are a lot higher and listing fees are free or very low. Big ticket items are expensive to sell. Juding by page views, there are a lot fewer people using ebay since the heyday in my experience.

From a buyers perspective the problem I have are the cues you see for $2500, $3500, or $6,000.00 I dont think I have ever seen a used cue that I would spend $2500.00 on much less $6k or more. I guess I am one of those people that will never have a special cue with that name on it where everybody goes oooohhh & aaahhhh when they see it. No matter the name on the cue it is still just a chunk of wood with a leather tip to push a small round ball around a pool table.

E bay cues

I buy cues all the time via e bay and other sites

its a great resource for rare cues and finer newer cues like
predator, joss,schon ext..
Just have to catch the rite guy at the rite time.

I find good rare cus all the time
Here's this 1982 Sailor on e bay

I love the ones that are listed incorrectly or misidentified. This is extremely common.

There were some like this recently, and there are some on Ebay right now.

Then there are things like valuable cases. As in they show the cue, and the valuable case is in the background. And they say only that the case comes with it. The case may be more valuable than the cue.

Sometimes they have a POS cue listed and "Oh, by the way" this other cue comes with it. And the other cue is the valuable one. And it's in the background.

For me it's a game to spot this stuff. And I have gotten very good at it.

One thing I don't do is tell the seller. Several years ago I did, but not for long.

The market is flooded with old cues, that is part of the problem.

Very often the price expectations are too high with sellers on Ebay now.

I agree with first sentence 100%.

No 2 I also agree with but I've seen a lot of people have to learn very quickly that they're asking too much. Get slapped in the face by reality when they post their cues at 500 or 1000 bucks over going rates.

I've seen a lot of people re-post their cues for 200 less, and then again for 200 less etc.
Saw a Black go for 1500, which was the real price but the owner started at 2200, then re-posted it twice at 2000, then again twice at 1800, then again twice at 1600. Finally when he posted it at 1400 starting bid it sold for 1500. Which was a fair price for that particular cue.

I like starting at 0.99 cents and let the market take care of the rest.
But I also don't try to sell any cue to make money of it.
Just sell to get rid of something I don't use anyway and may as well turn it into cash.

It doesn't bother me in the least if the other guy gets a good deal.
That goes back and forth eventually anyway.
I'm happy to make cash of something that was collecting dust.
Lots of people get real bothered by it if the buyer of their cue gets a good deal and often refuse to sell after the fact.
That's just childish and selfish behavior.

Happened to me once on an 80's Schon.
Won the bid at 799 and got an email from the seller saying he wasn't going to sell it at that price. lol........
Nothing I could do but it made me wonder why he had a starting price that low if he's not ready to sell it.

....and a Ferrari or Aston Martin just gets you down the road.

Learn, wait, watch. Patience pays off. But you have to be ready to move. And you have to know what you are looking at.

Yes, you can definitely own one.

If you go to flea markets and garage sales you will open a lot of cases and find Budwiser cues before you open one and find treasure. But if you keep looking it will happen.

In fact, for me the stories of how I got some of my cues is more treasure than the cues themselves.

Not everybody enjoys that sort of thing...but I sure do.

I think the reason some of you are not getting paid immediately is that Pay-Pal started a dead where the buyer can check a box saying that the seller will not be paid until after the buyer get the item. I ordered something shortly after they started the new policy and was wondering why the money hadn't been taken out of my bank account yet. I found in my Pay-Pal account that the box had been checked to not pay until after I received the item I bought. I unchecked that box and now the seller gets paid as soon as I buy something.

I understand. :)

What I meant was that sometimes expectations are unreasonable.

I am not bothered if somebody isn't trying to offer a "great deal" at all. Simply put, most of the time people aren't trying to.

But it is painfully obvious when their expectations are unrealistic. This is more with non-cue people. Like people that think that Grandpa's cue is worth $500 because they researched it online and the cue is worth maybe $50.

Of course it is common and quite normal to start high and work your way down to find the true selling price and get the most out of what you are selling. Relisting is a way to do that.

Guys, so aside from when you search for a specific brand ( ie - Scruggs etc ) what key words do yall enter as search criteria when you basically want to go thru and check out random cues? I'd guess " pool stick ", " pool cue " are the standard go-tos but any other interesting ones that worked out well? TIA!

Thanks for the info, I haven't used Ebay/Paypal in a while.

I get "paid" too, but I can't access the money until they receive it and leave feedback. It's locked up in my account and says it's "pending". I think it's like Type says, I don't have enough transactions or something. I have 100% positive feedback too.

I think what you mean is until tracking shows delivered, not feedback left. Feedback is not required and so that can't be a requirement for you to get your money. I think it has to do with you being a newer seller. It may also have to do with the type of paypal account you have. If you have a merchant or business account then that might help. Maybe give paypal a call and find what is required of you to set that up. I have one but it's been a while since I set it up.

As to the OP's post... I've been selling on there for while and I do think the overall market has changed and eBay has not adapted with the times. Between crags list, etsy, Amazon and the several selling apps now ava like Wallapop and Letgo. There is just a ton of competition Ebay has also added a ton of big box stores and Chinese sellers which flood the search engines and make it harder for buyers to find what they are looking for. Your titles have to be very on target and searchable.

200 views is not bad at all, the way eBay is right now. I sell more decorative collectables and am lucky if I get 20 or more. The internet is an ever changing market place and companies like eBay are not adapting fast enough, imo.

Key words only go so far. And often people misspell them or don't even know or use them.

Just search all used cues as a category, with a blank search field. Scroll fast, read the headings and glance at the pictures.

Sporting Goods > Indoor Games > Billiards > Cues Used x

Ever seen a JOSS spelled Josh? Or Juss? I have, many times. In fact there are so many things listed wrong it will blow your mind. How about Scruggs spelled with one "g"? And those are the simple names! LOL! Think of how the long names are butchered!

I have even found cues listed somewhere outside sporting goods!

I once bought a MINT CONDITION 1975 Honda CB500T with all the original records back to the day it was purchased plus the original matching helmet for $100 on Ebay because it was listed wrong so nobody saw it that might want it but me! It was 30 minutes from my house. I went and picked it up and cut in half to build a chopper. LOL!

Another example?
There is an an Adam A/H-46 Saturn that was listed as a Sampaio. They were darned lucky it made it up to $152 after they added that it might be an Adam, but they still typed it as "Adam A/H model 46 saturn" which is wrong.

Also, don't search for "best match", search for "newly listed". Then you'll be the first to see the Meucci Original at a Buy It Now price of $50.

I do have my additional tricks for key word searches but I am not giving them up. Well, not yet anyway.

There are other sites besides Ebay too, each with their own ways to find deals that typical cue shoppers will not see.

When you search Craigslist do you search "que stick"? You should. People often list cues that way that know nothing about them or what they are worth, that's why they list them wrong!

There are numerous other sites. I have a three monitor setup. I have multiple tabs open on multiple sites right now looking at cues. Want a JOSS Sneaky for $75? One available right now. Want a very early leather It's George tube case for $75? One is available right now. Want Brunswick Titlists for under $100 each? Available right now. (No, I am not going to post where.)

Then there are alternative search engines that don't use Google. You get different results.

And then there is Ebay Canada. I have bought cues cheap there. And Ebay UK. I have bought them from there as well. Sometimes people who list there include the US in their listing, but very often they don't!

I bought my refurb laptop on Ebay Canada. It was not listed on the US Ebay site. Got it cheap. I just contacted them first to ask if they would ship to the US. They said "of course".

I am sure some others around here know these things as well as I do.

I used to enjoy Ebay when it was an auction site but after they turned it into a storefront where you could buy things instantly I lost interest. I cannot remember the last time I even went to Ebay..

I love Buy Now. I wanted a nice Tiger Stripe stock for my Thompson Center Hawken rifle. I watched nice stocks go for $350.00 and up for years. One day I went to Ebay and some guy listed a beautiful stock for $175.00. I don't think it was listed for 15 minutes before I snapped it up.

Thanks Doc! I don't follow any sites on a normal basis, kinda just pop in from time to time. After going thru a handful of searches for my favorite cues I like to take a peak and see what's going on. While of course a steal wouldn't bother me I kinda like looking for unusual things but can only stumble upon them by accident from time to time.

For instance, earlier this week I bought a " cane cue " that I ran across by accident . Thought it was pretty cool, never seen one before. To me it looks like it has at least some age to it, the wood is hand carved in an " orientalish " pattern. The shaft is located inside the cane and has a hollow brass ball " handle " on top that stores a cube of chalk. Stuff like this is what I like running across but I'd have 0 idea how to search for something like that. Anyway thanks again Doc, I'll Def try some of your suggestions sometimes!

There is no requirement for the other party (buyer) to to leave feedback. It is entirely voluntary for the buyer to even leave feedback of any kind.
Many do not, even when very satisfied.
I don't understand your comment.
